I did just that on the '74 I had. It had the shocks, so the brackets weren't an exact fit. I fabbed essentially a huge washer and bolted through it and the rear body panel.
So if we stand at the side of your 1/4 panel where it meets the side of the bumper you would have an opening which is incorrect. Ron
