Just had to do this. Couldn't drill the dowel, to hard. Vice grips and puller slipped off. Welded a 3/8" allen head bolt (the head side of the allen) to the dowel. Slid a deep well socket and washer over the threaded side, then thread a nut against the washer/socket. Tighten the nut . It'll come right out.
