Can you run a good quality rubber fuel line with a socketless AN fitting?

Short answer is no way.
Socketless hose aka pushLoc is way stiffer than regular neoprene hose. Neoprene is not going to stay on a Socketless fitting.

Might work ok with a good hose clamp but won't pass tech with neoprene.

The correct hose pushed on with no clamp is just as legal as braided hose.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Having used some of the push on hoses and hose ends I really prefer the standard fittings and hoses.

Nope, sure can't . Push lock/approved hose only.
