I need to center up Steering Wheel on my 1979 W150 and I'd prefer to do it by moving the steering wheel a bit than by adjusting the steering shaft or by other means (if there's another way but I don't know how because 4wd doesn't have adjustable tie rods). It's just slightly off, but drives me nuts. I'm wondering if Steering Wheel shaft is evenly grooved all the way around so I can just pull the wheel and slightly shift it one notch over, or if it will only go on in one position like my '89 Diplomat?

Thanks,

Larry

I don't recall off hand Larry, but I think you might get lucky moving it 1 spline maybe 2 at the top. IIRC the box is keyed and the steer wheel can clock.

problem is, the dogbone is non adjustable so it does not take much to get it out of specs.

what I have seen done on a rack is to get the steer wheel straight with the dogbone & driver side knuckle on 0* and set the tie rod bar and pass side tie rod to 0* then adjust toe-in setting.

then check to see if it is in spec when turning lock to lock on the while on the rack starting from center, should be the same turns each way from center and the wheels should turn to the locks with out binding axle joint. FYI that stop bolt lock nut is adjustable to keep it from flopping to far. if it is MIA it will flop/bind the axle on hard turns.

check to see if both sides have the turn stops in place.

if you cant clock the steer wheel then a trip to the frontend shop for a toe-in setting while you sit in the seat to hold the wheel straight as you drive onto rack.

To my surprise, I was able to center it with steering wheel!

I thought for sure it wouldn't be that easy. I was so glad. Piece of cake. The shaft isn't even tapered so I didn't need my steering wheel puller either.

So happy now. It's running great, sealed up nicely, hedman elite headers and dual exhausts, new shocks, the Borgeson Steering shaft and steering to frame brace installed, all fluids changed, new gauges, and some other stuff I'm forgetting, but point is I'm really LOVING driving it now!

Thanks for help Mike.
