Do these truck blocks have provisions for the spider to install a hydraulic roller cam?

Might want to check, I believe it is already a roller cam motor, but they do not have Provisions for a spider.

I believe it is already a roller cam motor, but they do not have Provisions for a spider.

That dont make sense.

If its got roller lifters it got provisions for the spider and dog bones.

It could still be a roller block but of been built with a flat tappet cam.

You best bet is to look in the dizzy hole or pull the intake OR you cam pull the valve covers and look for the large diameter pushrod holes in the heads that are that way to make up for the tall roller lifter pushrod angle.

During that transition time ive some heads with the same casing numbers, some have the pushrod holes drilled larer, some dont.

Its all sorta a confusing time period but easy to bone up on and make it all simple,

The search engines that lead to fabo and all par are semi good resources as well as many here that know alot more then me.

But if you do it the last way id use a big light to look down the pushrod holes for the dogbones or turn it over and look for the big sweep of the pushrod as it cycles.

A 87 truck block will have the bolt holes for the retainer and the taller lifter bores, but will not be a roller cam. 1985 and up blocks are supposed to have the newer casting, but only cars from 85-89 got the roller cam. Trucks got roller cams starting in 88 on the 318 and 89 on the 360

All 318 blocks have the provisions for roller setups after 1985. Couldn't tell you if it has a flat tappet or roller though.

bolt and play. done a bunch of 318s to roller cam.

make sure the dogbones face the correct way.

make sure the oil hole in side of roller lifter is facing in towards cam.

I like to use the solid 5/16" pushrods from early 318 roller engines.

replacements are 3/8 hollow which fit/work fine.

Scratch I was tossing around the idea of using a comp roller cam with 206/210 duration 450/480 lift and keeping the ESC. The truck runs ok with it but as usual i want to experiment a little. It seems no one knows if the computer will handle the changes though.

no, it wont like it at all.

fresh carb and swap to a points dist

then a pertronix points conversion.

I leave the ecu off and tape the empty plugs up, ditch all those things on inner fender exept the starter relay on all my stuff.

right now I have a new reman 318 I stuck a stock 88 tbi roller cam in.

it works really nice getting 17mpgs with a 727 2.76 gear.

I run a stock 4v intake with a edelbrock 1905 795cfm q -jet with a reman stock points dist from autozone.

set it at 10* BTDC curb idle at 650rpm and hooked up the vac can to a full vac source. raised the curb idle so I readjust it back down to 650rpm.

this cleaned up the idle and I have no ping/knock on 89 pump gas from off idle to half throttle. no ping knock with a 55mph kickdown to 75 mph

last week I noticed first start up that it was idling real low...vac can ruptured and no mech advance and vac leak whistle from dist.

as a spare I use a 67 273 points dist with a set of MrGasket light springs/FBO limiter plate on 18* set timing at 14* no vac can mech advance hook up.

runs about the same due to full mech advance at idle with light springs. I think? to much advance hooking up the can though.

dropped a new not rebuilt points dist no limiter plate heavy stock springs and re set everything.

very smooth and clean idle, no pinging runs great for a LOPO stock roller engine.

There are good regrinds on ebay out of texas for about 150 shipped, many grinds, there is also a nice new crane on ebay from speedo motive, like the 509/292 but in a hydro roller priced at 1/2 of summits new cost.
