Hey all,

I'm going to an AirGap intake with a Quick Fuel carb on my 73 Barracuda with a flat hood. I'd like to keep the flat hood to maintain my sleeper look. I plan to run a 3" filter element on a 1.5" drop base and a flow-through top.

My previous setup was an LD4B(for sale if anyone is interested) with an AFB with a 1/2" spacer and a 3/4" drop base with a 2" element and the same flow through top. I don't know how much clearance I had, but enough that the air cleaner didn't leave a mark in the hood when the driver's mount gave it up.

My question is, since I took no measurements before pulling the old combo, will this set up fit under the flat hood? or should I be looking for another hood option?

I'm going from a warmed up 302 headed 318 to a 408 with Hughes massaged EQ heads.

Any thoughes?

My setup is BB so not directly comparable. I run flat hood and tall'ish M1 single plane intake. It all fits - barely - with a short EFI throttle body and mild drop base air cleaner (?3/4"). With a carb it would be no go for me.

Maybe with 1 1/2" drop it will fit for you but marginal IMO. I would at least research a different hood.

Sounds like a great setup! Are you running a low or a tall deck bb?

I've got a line on a nice power bulge hood (never really liked those) and am perusing an AAR and a fiberglass Shaker bubble hood. All of which can be low-keyed with paint work.

You could look into k-frame spacers to gain a little more clearance.

Hmmmm, good thought.

Not sure what that would do to the suspension geometry though. Might end up with some wonky bump steer issues or something else undesirable for my corner carver efforts. I'll have to look into it.

400 based low deck.

A resurrection here for anyone with the same question. The answer is YES:

A Barracuda flat hood will close with about 3/4" to spare to the 3rd lateral reinforcement in the hood with the following parts combination.

408
Ede Perf RPM Air Gap intake
Quick Fuel ss carb
1.5" drop base
14x3" element
Pro-Flow lid

There is another 1/2" to be had if I used my Moroso 14" lid.

I'm thooo happy to be able to retain the sleeper hood. If I wanted to cut out the reinforcement, I could probably fit a 1" nitrous plate.

Also, I have seen complaints about it, but I'm very happy with my highly cost effective Ede air filter. It is a tad bit oversize, but the lid and base fit together with the element tightly and securely with a better seal than the 14x2.5" K&N it replaced, though the lid takes a little extra effort to install.

Warning though, If not using a torque strap, Schumacher mounts or some other solution, popping the stock style drivers engine mount Will result in damage to your hood.

Your mileage may vary.

That is good info. I've got the dual snorkel Rallye hood and a fiberglass AAR hood for my 73. The AAR is on it now and I don't think the induction setup I have on there now will fit under a flat/Rallye hood. I can see the middle of the air cleaner through the hole in the scoop.
For the record it is a 340/LD4B/1" spacer, Holley 650, 3" air cleaner on ~3/4" drop base. It's going to get an RPM Air Gap soon. Going to have to lose the spacer and maybe change the filter to a shorter element if I'm ever going to fit the rallye hood.

Did you happen to measure the height difference between the Air Gap and the LD4B?

Crudely measured, the LD4B is right around an inch shorter than the Air Gap, measured with a strait edge from the high end carb pad to the top edge of the casting between the ports.

I ran a half inch wooden spacer with an AFB, the Moroso 3/4" drop base and a 2.5" element and the pro-flo top I could use a fancy wingnut without problems on that setup, but could not run a 3" element. With this setup, I can't run a fancy wingnut on the air cleaner.

If you'd get a deeper drop on the base and ditch the spacer as you say, I'd bet you'd be good with a 3" under the Rallye hood. You might even be able to get a thinner spacer in there.

I found this over at abodies only, a very valuable thread on intakes for a small block. https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/getting-the-intake-on-intake-manifolds.283550/

Great find, thanks! If I'd had found that, I wouldn't have sweated my hood fitting.
