I really think even if you sandblasted those surfaces the first few times you turn it is going to go right back to the surface you have now. As long as the "cones" aren't bottoming out you should be good. If you are interested in more "locking" action you could shim the load springs. But even with that, most of the locking action comes as a result of the load on the spyder/axle gears when one side wants to slip. Good luck! SportF---"power lock clutch"...not a cone unit. To the OP--replace the clutches, they are about $75 last I checked. Not worth monkeying around with any other fix.

When I put a cone section in my car I lapped the cones in.. took me a day and a half to do it.. then I shimmed it to be tighter.. it worked well for a number of years.. but this was on a drag car and didnt do much cornering

I didnt catch that this is a clutch type.. in this case just replace the discs in it.. dont waste your time to do anything other than that

I was wondering if anyone has tried glass beading the clutch surfaces that slip? . I think that would be counterproductive; you don't want a gripping surface on the discs, you want the clutches to slip most of the time and only grip under differential power.

Don't really care if it acts like a spool, that is the idea. I've seen it where one of the beveled discs was installed "upside down"..... That unit was pretty well locked up.
