Not to confuse things but my 71 340 Duster is a late build and has from the factory a 1972 fender apron. It has the indentation for the canister but the dimple holes for the bracket were never drilled. The line coming from under the car into the passenger side of the engine compartment also is upturned 90 degrees as opposed to the usual straight end that goes to the breather on the valve cover for 1971. No canisters for 1971.

CA cars had a NOX valve (on the pass side firewall, see pic) and the return vent line to the tank, 49 state cars did not. No charcoal canister until 1972.
The NOX valve had it's own wire harness extension, manual and auto trans versions were unique. However I think it was only certain engines that got the NOX valve.
