timing gear position advance or retard or stock - 08/21/22 03:38 AM

I have a 03 truck 5.7 going into a 93 Ramcharger 2wd
got new melling chain and HV oil pump
crank gear has a few ways to install
advance 2-4 deg
retard 2-4 deg.
straight up
using stock 05 computor
long tube headers
maybe aftermarket tune latter just stock now
where should I set it??
thanks for any info

I would advance it a couple degrees for a little extra TQ but it is probably not even a difference you could feel.

Is your 05 computer from a vehicle with MDS? If not you could make it all work, if it is from something with MDS you will get codes for the MDS system because the 03 did not have it yet. A tuner can fix that though.

the wiring and 05 comp I got from Hot Wire
I am assuming it doesn't have MDS or been deleted by Hot Wire
the crank gear has 2,4 or 6 advanced keyways
would 6 be too much?
thanks Dave

Do you know how to degree the cam, hopefully?
If so make sure and check the LSA and intake lobe timing in relation to TDC to make SURE the cam is either advanced or straight up.
I've had a bunch of different aftermarket timing sets that do NOT have the timing marks on the cam gear directly underneath the tooth needed to make them install correctly like they want you to end up with shock puke scope
On BB sets one half a tooth off is either twelve degrees retarded or is what they are trying to get it set at, if the mark is to the driver side mark on the crank gear it is retarded, if it is to the passenger side of the mark on the crank gear it will be nearer to where it should be scope
Good luck, let us know what you do and find please.
It is Way better to take the time NOW to make sure you get the cam exactly where you want it instead of wishing later that you had degree it twocents work
BTW, generally advancing most cams will help the bottom RPM end power and make the top end RPM power a little less strong, retarding them normally does the opposite, retard the real tire spinners and advance those that don't spin the snot out of the tires off idle up twocents
