EZ efi and e85 UPDATE!!!! - 05/15/20 04:59 PM

Hi everyone,
So I have finished the dart with all the new hemi install really like it runs great, just put on a new exhaust system no leaks sounds great.

I call FAST EFI and ask them if the ez efi is compatible with E85, the tech "tommy" answers yes, during all this I am on the CPG nation tech forum and someone responds and I am guessing its a paid for employee for fast tells me to upgrade to the sportsman efi it better and runs e85 easier.

the steps I have taken so far is switched the pump in the tank to run either gas or e85. I know it takes 30%ish more fuel on e85.

I am sure I will have to play with fuel pressure, tip in, reprogram the again to just do it for e85, my hand held doesn't give me the option to pick fuel but "tommy" said its smart enough to offset itself.

True?? Not True??

Oh and this is on a 5.7L

Comments Welcome

I am NOT an employee of FAST ...LOL... I would still not do this with an EZ system because the EZ does not allow tuning from a laptop and many (okay, not all) engines tuning for E85. Anyway, go ahead and try the EZ. You already have it, so why not try it? If it works okay, then you're good. If you need tuning, you could upgrade the ECU later.

I ran E85 on my EZ EFI 1.0 on a 318. I just did the set up that the motor was 30% bigger and it ran well. It ran out of acc pump adjustment anything above E70 content

you can only do that 30% trick if you've got pure e85. In the US street puimp e85 can be a broad mix and not actually 85%

Yeah I was more referencing using E85. I've never had pump E under 80% here.
Obviously you should test every tank and adjust accordingly

For more simple systems, like FiTech, folks just increase the engine displacement figure to get the VE table in the ballpark. the ECU doesn't need to be told it's running E85, it doesn't really care. Just help it by saying the CID is larger than it is.

I run 50% E70 ["E85"] and 50% 93 octane to run ~E40 in my 'Cuda, it's good for about 100 octane, mixing is easy and my timing is conservative enough to manage ethanol variance.

that's what I thought Gooddy!! I appreciate all the info from everyone. I just don't feel like selling all my stuff to do an upgrade that I feel I don't have to do. I want to put a bunch of miles on this car this summer and if I can run e85 I will if not it will just be 93.

thanks and if there are more comments they are welcome.

Ok so I have a good news update, My son who I would be lost without has been diving into the MSD controller and changing timing to support the e85, he then jumps on the efi system and plays with that. I do have to say I really like how the motor is running. we started with built in tune from MSD, re did the efi adding 30% more cubic inch to it, made some adjustments to pre squirt the AFR settings and added a bunch of timing so far. it responds to every change good or bad. Right now we are at 27 degrees of timing and climbing. we decided to not do any more last night as some of the neighbors were starting to get a little caterpillar eyed every time we took the car out on the main road. we are going to pick back up this weekend and try to get to 32 degrees or at least until it stops responding to change, or pre detonation takes place. I just might pop the heads off and remove the shim i have in the head gasket as well.

so far so good and only waisted about $3 in e85 tuning verse $15 of race fuel with the old motor.

21 miles last night and no issues, I think I just paid for the swap!!!

Watch the timing.
G3 do not like too much timing. No more than 22 to 26 IIRC

we are going to hold timing at 27 we went to 30 last night and got some pre detonation. we will still pay with it but it does respond to changes and that's good.

we are also finding out that the fuel pressure is going to be key as well. it is surging a little when I come to a light and stop. so we are pulling fuel pressure out and I will be adding a TPS adjustment as well. the computers have no issue telling you that you went to far, you can just feel the change for the bad or if you go to far, and its instant to feel the changes. really cool for sure. My fuel is at 49psi and I am going to take it down to 45psi tonight see what effects that has on it as well.

I am an old guy and this is really cool stuff to learn about.

Do you have a video of your car at idle? I would like to know how it sounds. It sure looks like a fun car to drive.
