Using an automatic transmission will be fine, stick it will need to be repaired or use a pilot bearing that fits in the converter pilot.

it appears they broke off a piece trying to get the pilot bushing out?

Most likely. I don't know how else it would happen. Some real hammer mechanic's out there!

That will come out no problem. Being that you are from WI extracting broken stuff should be second nature. I'm a local hero around here lol.

I'd stand it on the front (gracefully) and use a long shank 1/8" carbide and grind on it until you can a) break it in pieces or b) find a broken tap extractor and try to get two prongs around what ever is in there.

Be patient and work with lots of light, you'll be good to go.

If none of that sounds good take it to a machine shop someone will gladly remove that for a hundo.
