6.1L: Cam choices

6.1L: Cam choices - 03/12/18 06:53 PM

Hello all,

I bought myself a low mileage 6.1L as Christmas present to myself last December - cool!

I'm going to disassemble the motor and check everything out and figured I would consider swapping the cam, valve springs, and pushrods (maybe lifters) while it is apart.

Maybe not worth it as stock setup can't be improved upon? IDK...

Cam suggestions appreciated - shelf or custom? (max lift and duration with stock pistons)

Is it OK to re-use the rod bolts? I don't want to pay for a resize with ARP bolts. (just get new replacement bolts from Mopar?)

Anyway, motor will be going into a lighter car (approximately 2700lbs) with a 727 behind it.

Haven't decided yet on a Holley carb/drag pack intake or Holley EFI/stock 6.1 intake to deliver fuel. Hope this doesn't affect the cam choice too much...

Thanks!

Don't reuse the rod bolts.
Stock lift I think is .571 intake .557 exhaust (please correct me if I'm wrong),
biggest cam I ever installed in a stock 6.1 is Howards Cams 786155-14 Lift: .575 / .575, Duration @ .050: 213 / 219, Centerline: 110, not sure how much bigger you can go with stock pistons.

you cant resize the powdered metal rods unless you can find a bearing with a bigger outer diameter.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to put a drop in set of pistons/rods

If dropping in the rods and pistons, may as well get a stroker crank too...4.050 or 4.25. I'll start a new topic to discuss stroke options.

Thanks to all!
