Any machine shops in the DFW area that know Gen III HEMI? - 01/12/18 01:58 AM

I have a 2013 5.7 out of a 21k mile Charger which has a snapped rod. This is the way I purchased the car....I believe it was due to hydrolock. The motor is already out of the car.

I now have to decide whether to rebuild existing (block "appears" unscathed), go with a stroker kit to get all the forged goodies, or maybe pickup a 6.4 out of a wrecked donor (I have access to salvage auctions).

My biggest fear in building the engine is going to a shop that doesn't know their way around one, and getting something that will give me problems down the line. Cost is also a factor. The short-block and long-block options from the well-known players seem PRICEY!! Then add freight charges on top of that. I'd like to find somebody local and obviously live in a big Metroplex.

Can I save decent money by building up a stroker using my existing hardware like the block and heads?

Thank you for any opinions

They go together pretty easily. You may ask on the DFW LX facebook group if you venture on there at all...

Grab a 6.4 short block from the dealer and slide it under your heads, cheaper than stroking you current engine and you get a bigger bore for less valve shrouding, very good machine work, already assembled, you can get the BGE or Apache for your choice in compression.

I am in the DFW are and have two different strokers Im putting together right now. I have a very competent machine shop that knows Gen 3 and the "big" builders don't do it any better than I do. Not sure what a short block cost from a dealer, but they never seem "cheap" to me. PM me if you want to talk further about it.

How much hp would a stock 6.4 hold, with drop in pistons and rods?

Short blocks can be had around $2500 and guys are running big boost to em in 4500# chargers and challengers. Anything under 600hp wouldn't bother me a lick on a stock short block.

The cheapest stroker kit I know of to make a 5.7 into a 392 is $2200 ish SCAT stuff and does not come balanced $175 at my local machine shop, no block, no boreing, honing, not assembled, doubtfull its much if any better than stock apache/BGE stuff.

May just be me but it don't seem worthwhile to stroke a 5.7 unless your building in excess of 600 hp and even then you might just as well start with a hellcat/apache/BGE block and get the bigger bore for $1200 ish for a brand new bare block you can drop your kit into with no aditional machining (well maybe at least get a profeshional to check it over real good, most of the small machine shops don't seem to know how or have the equipment to hold any better tollerances).

Do you have the dealer part number(s) for the 6.4 shortblock you are referring to?

I'm a newbie at the Gen IIIs, me and my 16yo son (it's his car) are learning though. So BGE is the truck engine, would Apache then be the 6.4 used in the SRT?

They aren't a whole lot different than a ls1... so can't see a problem finding someone to build one. Really there's nothing complicated about building one.

They must be starting to get greedy or thats just not the best place to buy them, it was about the first place that came up. A few months ago my dealer quoted me about $2500 for either one, no core.
