Gen III Hemi +Tremec=which starter

Gen III Hemi +Tremec=which starter - 12/11/17 06:51 AM

Question anyone here running a gen III and a tremec? If so which starter did you use? I have an American powertrain kit in my 69 Bee. They recommended a starter from a late 90's truck with a 360. As you can see in the pics I had to trim the bosses on the block to fit. It does not look like the headers will fit (tti) Not sure this is the right starter. Any insight? thanks

Which Tremec are you using?
I run a T56 Magnum with my Gen 3 with TTI 1-3/4 headers and any parts store Mopar mini starter should work. The starter needs to have the spacer for one of the bolts or else the hole will be too big and will be loose when cranking the engine. When that happens the ring gear teeth will be chipped off and the engine will not start. You then have to use a torch to be able to flip the ring gear on the flywheel over.

Yes I had to trim the bosses as well. I ran everything with uncoated headers when I got my engine dyno tuned and then pulled them off to get them coated locally. They are a pain to pull off but can be put back as long as you get the angle correct. This is with a stock style k frame as well.

I've done 2 rams , an 03 and an 05 , both used the SRT-10 truck T-56 and both used RM6076 bell housing with stock starters. Headers fit fine, but it's an apples to orange (truck vs old B-E bodies) had a bolt issue RylisPro pointed out,

I believe I lightly ground on the block to clear my dakota/magnum starter. 5.7L, QuickTime bell, T56 Magnum.

I'm using a TKO 600 with a quick time 6071 bellhousing. Not sure what you mean by a bolt spacer? Have some pictures of that? Or where you have a different combo is it different? I have the factory starter for this Hemi not even close to lining up with this bell. Thanks

I have alway used the Mopar P5249644AC style Nippondenso mini starter due to the low weight. You can get them from everywhere as they are frequently re-manufactured

As you can see one bolt hole is larger than the other. They usually come with a spacer but I just drilled a nut and ground it round to make it fit.

Also are you trying to install the headers with the starter bolted in? It helps to jack the car up as high as possible for more room. Take starter off and install headers from the bottom

This is the starter I'm using looks the same. So I hope I'm good also thanks for the tip on the spacer I didn't even notice the difference in bolt hole size. No 'm not trying to install with starter in. We were mocking stuff up looked a little close. Thanks

The 05 truck man trans starter is smaller, had to cut the block bosses on mine too

Hey Eric!
How much less does the 56029274AA 05 truck starter weigh vs. the regular mini starter?
I have been meaning to get one but since my mini starter still works great I haven't bothered. I'm always looking to lose more front end weight.

Thanks!

If it’s 1lb lighter I would be surprised, the room around the starter/headers is pretty nice though.
