Aluminum block P5153896AA questions - 11/21/17 02:04 AM

1) Is dry sump oiling required, or just remote filtering??

2) What do you all make of the threaded inserts welded to the block sides? Is that the work of Mopar? Note there are 4 on one side only 1 on the other side like that.

The block is being advertised as new, but I'm suspect...

Do not quote me on this, but isn't the Mclaren block the one to stay away from?

Ray is yours the Newer version?
I THINK they are supposed to have larger ribs cast into the valley area. Like X patterns.

That is #3 of the 5 McLaren blocks. I have #1 and #4. I had heard that they might have water leaks so I had mine pressure tested and all was well. Think one of the blocks is being run currently with no problems. Both of my blocks have the welded on pads to make the 4 mounts on each side the same height. They were being built as dry sump but I will likely run a remote filter unless I use the crank and rod set I got with it. Problem with that is its a 2.93 stroke so without boost it would be a little weak. Around 305". Both mine are already bored for 60mm cam bearings and, I think, 1.06" for lifter bushings. The 2 cranks are Bryant and the are cut on the snout so the don't fit the oil pump. Have an ATI damper with the drysump cog on it but I guess it can be set up for a single stage external wet sump.

So that is what the mci 003 on the block means. That was my next question, thanks.

Can someone enlighten me the McLaren story?

This block also has roller cam bearings. Did they come that way?

They were designed for McLaren to run Indy from what understand.
Project was cancelled and blocks ended up at PWR. I was told lots of issues with them.

Thank you all! If something is priced too low, I'm always suspicious.

Can you share what "Problems" there where. Would like to know before I go forward or if these are just talk. That was mentioned on a previous thread but the only thing anyone ever said was water leaks. I think it was on that thread where someone chimed in saying they were currently running one of these blocks but I'm not sure on that.
Anyone know what block the guy with the roadrace Ebody Cuda runs.

Hello!
The aluminum block in my car came from Arrow Racing.

Works great, No leaks!

I've built a few and there's been a host of issues. Main studs pulling the threads out of the block because the holes are a tad big, sleeves splitting all the way around the cylinder just below the deck, motor mounting points pulling out the side of the block, porous casting may leak water into the oil, shall I continue? lol Granted most all these issues arise on boosted and N2O applications. Staying NA you may never have any of these issues.

Arrow does all the machine work for these blocks as well as the new one that's in the system but doesn't show a release date yet. It's slated to retail for $5900. The new version looks to be far superior than the last go at it. I've got some pics of the new one that displayed at SEMA a few weeks ago if it'll let me post them.

I don't remember exactly but something with the sleeves sinking in the block. Also material was maybe different on them. I don't have any first hand knowledge just remember reading about them when they showed up.
PWR also didn't have the best rep around so that may have something to do with it.

Re: Aluminum block P5153896AA questions - 11/22/17 03:04 PM

The problems I stated above happened to lots of high horsepower builds. I forgot about the sleeves sinking in the block as mentioned above. A replacement sleeve at the time was $25. I'm all about saving money but that's suspiciously cheap for a quality part. If I were to build another of those blocks for myself I would build the biggest CI NA motor I could. That would depend on which block you had as there were 3 or 4 different bore sizes available. If your using a motor plate that eliminates the side of the block pulling out issue.
I know someone who can run the block number and see if it's considered a go no go block. I'll post as soon as they get back with me.

Any tips on how to post pics on here?

I think the biggest bore is 4.185 (?)
I’m running one of these also 7.0L NA and have not had any leak problems yet
