How will this cam idle?

How will this cam idle? - 10/13/17 04:33 PM

As I am learning about cams this particular one came across my desk:

116 LSA

243/254 @ .050

.615 intake lift, .597 Exhaust lift

This will be a fuel injected engine, and although this is a silly request, I want a VERY lopey idle.

This engine will also be supercharged if that matters.

I know this is kind of a dumb question, but I want to ask!

You will hear it
But that 116 lsa is not something I would consider wild as far as a idle goes

Is this a cam you have or a grind out of a catalog? I would talk to a cam grinder and tell them what you are looking for. I'm sure they can tighten the lobe sep a bit to get the lopey idle and still have good street performance.

Got to be carefull on running too tight of an LSA on a bigger cam as the valves have to be able to clear each other so you got to be carefull of bigger valves and bigger cams. I can't speak for certain on that particular cam and any particular combo of valve diameter or head casting.

What kind of overlap does it have?

This is a cam we currently have, it was made for a well known gen III racer that changed his mind. His car is a 1,000 hp challenger with a vortech supercharger.

The price was right, so we snagged it.

Using the wallace calculator it shows 16.5 degrees of overlap.

Anyone want to tell me it if will have lope? lol.

What's the advertised duration for that camshaft? Honestly, it will most likely sound near stock. Great camshaft for a turbo build.

It will probably have a good lope if you turn the idle down to 500 RPM, you know like one of those show cars where the idle is so low trying to get it to lope you can count the firing order?

Just kidding I have no idea, sound is always nice to have but let the tire smoke do the talking.

I agree
Lope doesn't mean power

If you want lope. Buy another cam

It will have a slight chop but nothing crazy. Mine is 247/255/114 and sounds nasty cold but smooths out with just a hint of chop warm at 850rpm idle.

Thanks. I was told by a well known hemi builder that this cam was WAY to big for the application. It did not seem to big to me but I am new to these engines.
