I have a 6.4 longblock I am thinking of using as a project.

It doesn't come with the manifold or any computer. Would this be a candidate for a carb? I havent found much in the way of info on 6.4 carb swaps. I would eventually switch back to an EFI setup but for simplicity would like to grab the motor and throw a carb on it and go.

Would need VVT locked out,then carb away. If it's an auto version, it will need half the lifters swapped to non mds versions to iirc.

72 Swinger is right, It can be done:


Use a comp cams lock out kit for the VVT

MDS lifters replaced with regular lifters

If using the MSD Hemi 6 ignition, you MUST change the tone ring on the crank to the older ring found on 6.1 hemis, as well as aftermarket stroker kits. Molnar Technologies sells the tone rings. You MAY need to change the crank sensor as well to read the different tone ring.

Install your favorite carb manifold and carb.


I will say that most folks that have spent the $$$ for a 6.4 also go with fuel injection, right or wrong. That is why most 6.4 builds are injected.

For probably less than 1700.00 you can get the new stand alone from Fiat.
Comes with all sensors. There's a thread on here describing it.
Simplest and cheapest way IMO.
One thing is the donor engine needs to be 2014 or newer.
I think they changed the toner AKA reluctor wheel.

You're going to spend more time goofing around trying to run it with a carb than you would getting the efi working. Just do the efi the first time since you already said that's the direction you'll eventually head.

If you're going to leave it stock, I would use the new Mopar standalone.

Look for spring for a release, but coming from Mopar it might be spring of 2019. I have the EFISource on my 6.1. Its great, call Mike right now since hes an hour later in PA.

it says it is for 2014 and newer. Think the toner ring is the only difference?

Nothing, in fact it costs more to do it because you cannot tune it without additional, extra costs.

Unless you need a smog legal setup then the MP kit is an expensive choice.

Because it uses the factory knock control,DBW throttle body and would need 0 tuning since it's already for a stock 6.4. By using the the stock TB that saves $300+ alone.

Did you go an actually look at the information on the MS3?

Because most of your objections appear to be unfounded.

It comes with a base tune that is also self tuning.

It is plug and play and they have a 6.4 version.

It works with VVT and active intake.

It works with the knock sensors.

And there is no need to either pay for a tuner or someone to tune it either, Tuner Studio is free.

As for the DBW throttle body, I dunno it doesn't say.

So add in the price of a new TB, which woulds be easier to retrofit, imo, than the drive by wire setup, the pricing is similar with a lot more accessible ability in the MS3 included for the price.

I have an MS3 and it still doesnt have knock control ability. I know from experience that new Mopar deal on a STOCK 6.4 would be the bomb.

Hey,

For those of us that Bracket Race weekly..........carburetors are needed to keep dialing predictable.

Based on what I see here...............is it still doable to get a 6.4 or 7.0 to run on a carb?

For sure it is, use a Ritter or DragPack intake (fairly tall) and MSD makes a controller to use for carbs. sixpackgut and other guys on this site have went this method with good results. OU812 did a 6.4 build that was carb'ed and it did 700 hp (he posted his results in this subforum)

I'd think that a closed loop EFI system would be much more consistent than a carb. Why do you think a carb is more likely to give consistent times?
