2013 Hemi Swap - 09/26/16 02:12 AM

I'm hoping you guys here have the experience that I am looking for. So my project that I started last November is putting a 2013 5.7L out of a Challenger into my 1970 Dodge D100. I am using a FAST complete system. The main issue I am dealing with right now is that it won't start. FAST doesn't seem to know why. I believe the issue that I have narrowed it down to is that Dodge changed the crank reluctor wheel in 2013. FAST software only works with the previous 2 generations of reluctor wheels. So I have 2 questions. 1st, any advise on getting the 2013 to work as is. Second, where can I get an earlier version of the reluctor wheel and will it just bolt on. Thanks for any help that you can pass along.

Okay, going to try and help here. Molnar technologies has the reluctor wheel that has the correct tooth count, however some reluctor wheels were 3 bolt and some were 4 bolt mounting. You will need to make sure what bolt layout your crank is.

Also, you may need a different crank sensor for an earlier tone ring??

One last thing, the bolts in your hemi are torque to yield meaning you will need new bolts for the mains and rods since you have to pull that to get the reluctor wheel changed.

If I am wrong anyone please correct me, but I believe this all to be true.

Have you verified tooth count? I wouldnt guarantee that is problem. They are either 32 or 58 teeth. But according to Manley there are 2 types of 58 tooth, 2012 and earlier and 2013 and up. The early reluctor wheel has .170 gap between teeth and the later one has .130 gap between teeth. Also ALL VVT engines have 58 tooth wheels.

I haven't verified it yet. I'm going to pull the motor in the next few weeks. I'm trying to plan ahead of everything that I might need to know or do. The guys at Molnar told me that the earlier model reads the leading edge of the tooth and the late model reads both the leading and trailing edges. The ignition box is seeing pulses, but they are not translating to the computer. So I'm assuming the computer doesn't like the pulses it is seeing and will not send fire to the motor. Do you know if there was any changes in the camshaft trigger? I've put the lockout for the VVT so that should no longer be an issue.

There are also different crank sensors that are used depending on the tooth count of the reluctor.
Green O-ring for higher number, red for lower number. I also had a no start issue and this solved the problem

I read that on here last winter when I was troubleshooting and gave that a shot. It didn't make any difference unfortunately. I tried both of those plus the one that was on the motor when I got it.

I also had FAST system but ws never able to use it and ended up using a MS3 setup to get my engine running. With the MS3 I was able to log my crank no-sync issue to find out I had the wrong crank sensor. The FAST harness had way too many wires anyway. The MS3 gold box from EFI Source is a much simpler cleaner setup.

I agree, I have an '09 crank out of a Ram, it is .187 between teeth, and a '14 crank out of a Ram, .222 between teeth of the reluctor, will the '09 fit the '14 crank? hopefully I'll pull the '09 crank out of the block and check to see if the '09 reluctor will fit the '14 crank...hopefully this weekend....
