E Body rear shock location?

E Body rear shock location? - 05/17/18 02:19 AM

I'm building a 71 Barracuda with a Hellcat swap. I'm using a triangulated 4 link with double adjustable coil over Viking shocks from RMS. I added a Hotchkiss rear sway bar and it interferes with the shock location at the front of the axle mounts. I can add an upper mount and relocate the shocks to the rear of the axle mount easy enough. Are there going to be any issues by doing this? So my shock will be mounted behind the axle instead of in front of it.

Hotchkis rear sway bars are designed for leaf spring setups.

Go to Bill at RMS and ask for rear sway bar.

Agreed. Sell the Hotchkis unit and get one designed for your Street Lynx set up.

Bill also can recommend the necessary spring swaps to maintain the correct roll couple with your set up instead of installing a tail happy rear bias with the added sway bar and no spring change. These rates all interact together to produce balance, or lack there-of.

If you really want to move the coil overs, you could do that. You simply will be adding weight with the extra mounting point and bracketry since there is also the need for the link brackets to remain in place. There is the possibility of interfering with the gas tank and then the relocation of that could impact the polar moment of inertia.

I sent an email to RMS asking for their input. Here are a couple of pics showing the left side original mounts and the right side where I am looking to relocate. I checked the full range of motion and everything works without interference. Just have to be careful to leave room for the exhaust.

That looks workable. Still keep in mind a possible spring rate changes. You're moving the coil over an 1+ closer, so it will have more effective rate now in addition to adding the sway bar which will add more roll couple.

Thank you. I can work with the spring rate and stiffness is what I'm looking for. Still have to add torque boxes next week. I appreciate your input.

Got it all worked out. This should accomplish what I needed.
