B-Body Stock steering coupler questions

B-Body Stock steering coupler questions - 12/29/17 01:04 AM

The stock b body power steering couple allows for some fore-and-aft (in and out) play when the car goes over bumps etc...

If I'm reading this right, the Borgeson website lists a u-joint coupler to use when replacing the stock power steering gearbox with a borgeson box.

Does the u-joint replace the stock coupler?

How does the u-joint coupler allow for fore-and-aft play
I can see how it works when the shaft angle is not straight
in alignment with the steering gear. Does it also allow for
fore-and-aft???

Steering gear gurus's please chime in!!

I would use this instead of the Borgeson U-joint.

I would also buy this as I hate the stock metal clip

It will trash either the breakaway pin in the column (67-up) or the upper bearing at the top of the column as the car flexes. Which it WILL.

The pot coupling was there for a reason. Lose it at your peril.

dangina have you used this coupling? Is the spring clip needed with this set up as well?

Rick,

I didn't say I was going to use the Borgeson u-joint, I was asking if it is acceptable to use it given the stock steering couplers design which allows for "in/out" play.

Why does Borgeson advertise and sell this on their website as a mopar "solution" if it doesn't work?

Also, for example How is a 2003 Ford F-150 able to use a u-joint
and not a pot coupler?

Typically newer cars have a slip yoke style steering column. My experience has been that it is primarily that way so that it can be assembled easier in the plant.

That said, I have a borgeson ujoint.

What are you running it on? A-body, B-Body, E-body...?
have you had any issues going over speed bumps etc?
