Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 11/01/15 07:58 AM

Have you ever wanted to Drive your car on a track? Here's your chance! Newbies welcome. We have Mopar friendly instructors available, driving class, and instructor ride-a-longs. This is much smaller group than typical cattle-call rice-burner track days. You'll have way more run time and much smaller more frequent run groups with increased safety.

Spring Fling Speed Festival X April 21st, 2016 at Willow Springs Raceway, Rosamond CA

Direct contact Tim Herren from Alltime Racing for payment and question: therren_2000@yahoo.com

It's a Mopar Track Day Thursday April 21, at Willow Springs Raceway. Spring Fling Mopar show at Woodley Park, April 23 & 24 Sat-Sun, Van Nuys California.

This event is the complete opposite of sitting beside your car at a car show. This place is alive with cars blasting down the front straight, cams loping as the cars come off track and cruise through the pits. If your up for going on track then you might see and hear what its like for a NASCAR Daytona to go flying by you!

The Day starts off with breakfast in the track diner, followed by the Driver's Meeting. Then it's upstairs for Performance Road Race Basics. Then out on track to get signed off by an instructor for a full day of 2.5 miles on "The fastest track in the West".

Schedule: Thursday Apr 21
7:00 am Drivers meeting
8:00 am Course open to the first group
8:00 am New Driver instruction class and ride along instruction
12:00 pm Lunch
5:00 pm Track Closed
6:30 pm Dinner

NEW for this year will be Happy Hour at the track the afternoon before. Bring your Enclosed car trailer, RV, or Camp Trailer and cook out at the track starting Wednesday afternoon. This is purely optional.

**************************************************************
BEAKING NEWS, still working out the timeline, Bob Tarozzi will be signing copies of his new book and telling more stories of his amazing adventures.

In Addition I have another Chrysler chassis engineer , Bill Surber, and Chrysler Liaison to Petty Enterprises from 1968- 197?, Like Bob, he also worked at Hurst with the Big Block Darts And AMX's on their Dart Program. His name, Bill Surber. He is looking forward to tell his stories as well and he has some good ones as well.

While I love the idea of this, the date makes it a deal breaker. The previous events were always 2 days before the show. I doubt many that travel for the show are going to hang out 4 days after the weekend show to make it to this event.
Too much trouble to get it a week earlier?

I'm thinking Steve has some dates wrong here. Track day 21st, Thursday, cruise 22nd, Friday, show 23&24. Does this sound right Steve?

Yes that is correct. I had one date typed wrong that I spotted. Does it make sense and look right now?

So what is the cost for registration? It's realistic that the RicerCuda will be ready this year. What sort of safety gear will I need? Thanks, Steve

I forgot the exact amount from last year. And I don't know if their are any changes. I'll get alltime (Tim Herren) to chime in.

For safety gear just need a helmet, battery strapped down, and a radiator overflow.

Cool, Thanks Steve. After the Bears game I'm heading over to get a few hours on the car, been fighting getting the X-pipe to line up with the mufflers/tailpipe. Next, finish wiring up to broadband gauge, gas gauge and the ammeter. Any idea where I can check out a helmet? The only place local I can think of is Hawaii Racing. I'd like to try them on as opposed to guessing and buying online.

I didn't say that but I'm not going to disagree. Irwindale isn't that far off, since I've still got to get my hood made up and have Inland make up the driveshaft I could just make a day of it.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 11/02/15 01:36 AM

For final pricing I'm waiting to get next years pricing from the track. Approx $300.

I started doing some drag racing this past year. Its close to $200 registration for the weeekend. Drag racing has really gone up seems to me. $300 for a track day is very reasonable for the hours of driving time you get comparatively.

Helmets are a must try on deal. Wear it aroung the store for 15 minutes to make sure. Snug is perfect. Loose is bad.

Okay... Glad to see that there was a small boo-boo with the dates. I am in. I was bummed when I first read this last night because I have several things I'm doing to my car. Better seats, new guages, seat belts, sticky tires...
This is good. All is well in the world now.

Thanks, no worries. The last flyer I have saved was from '08 and it was 295, 245 for early registration. Eight years down the line I expect it to cost more. I'm just looking to budget it in. up

Had to correct you there. I did have a "FrankenDuster" for a few years but that car went to a guy in North Dakota in 2011. The Charger? It is a keeper for the long haul. Let my nephews battle for it when I am dust.

If anyone local has a motorhome, travel trailer, or other mobile sleeping accommodations, or friend(s) that want to rent theirs for a few days for us out of towners, please either pm me, or post up the info here. I am looking for accomodations at the track for wednesday and thursday nights. Don;t need to move or drive the thing, just sleep in it. Willing to compensate. I also have two additional non-mopar entries so I will not add them to the list, but a 60s nova and a fox body mustang.

More swap meet vendor attendance compared to a certain past Spring Fling or a Fall Fling or ???

But we are putting on an extra push for more swappers by soliciting auto local swap meets.

All the sponsors from last year are back and we picked up a new one that does Mopar licensed apparel

If by milestone you mean huge dent in my pocket book, why yes, yes it is. Lol. I just picked it up this morning at IMM in Indio and drove it down to Hotchkis in Santa Fe Springs. So, we'll see when they finish it. Everyone can bug them with me. biggrin

For the first time out keep that rear sway bar totally DISCONNECTED.

Just unbolt the dog one link on one side. After some laps we can connect it on the lightest setting. I see if you like it. It's just two 3/4" bolts and nuts.

Were those dyno numbers done with those shorties or a set of dyno headers?

Done deal !!

The real 70 Trans Am Challenger will be at the Spring Fling show and racing at Willow Springs.

When will you get another chance to be on the TRACK with the real Trans Am race car? !!

Bob Tarozzi that developed the Trans Am cars will be at both events too.

It should be interesting how it will play out between an autocross setup and a road course setup. Brian uses the same headers for his dyno. He said if I went with the long-tube headers, I would probably gain about 15 hp.

It's different. Especially on Big Willow and especially for novice/first timers. You've got a lot of HP and TQ to break the tires loose. Not a lot of tight corners on Big Willow.

Wow... wish I could make it with my Challenger to Willow Springs... and to be "on track" with one of the two most ultimate Challengers in the world would be a dream come true! I've warmed up the #77 Challenger's engine at Road America a few years ago (vintage event held every July).

Thanks for that.
Actually, it was a friend that was having trouble. I have yet to register but the link will help both of us.
Last year, my friend had a wheel bearing seize in Tulare and had to get towed back home. Tim that hosts the track event offered to credit his 2015 fee to this years event. Nice move, Tim !

tim puts on a great, safe event with tons of track time, and is a stand up guy. if your friend was closer we probably would have sent a rescue party. we have enough cars, tow rigs and trailers, parts and able bodies to do most anything.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 01/30/16 12:08 AM

Nv69byrr- 2000 M rating or newer, of course SA is best.
DOT is a no go.

As I mentioned to Frankeduster the day of the event when I found out his friend wasn't coming, we have a pit box full of spares. Spindles, bearings, etc. but without a phone call I can't be of help. Like Rick said we would even sent out he troops . We have trucks and. Trailers and we where just siting around at the hotel anyway.

Thanks. It is converted to electronic and has the manners of a brand new car. Runs on pump gas despite the 10.5:1 compression. It is a Hilborn unit that I have had for nearly a decade and have been very patiently waiting for the planets to align to be able to do this.

Sounds like a great piece for the street then and very unusual to see on a street driven Mopar for sure. I have played with the Kinsler set ups on our Bowtie powered Sprint Cars and have always thought about and looked for a small block Mopar one and convert it to electronic for the street, missed one on Ebay a few years ago. Glad you got it done Rick makes a really cool car that much cooler!! Cant wait to see it.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 03/04/16 06:48 AM

72Swinger that's absolutely correct. Its pretty much out of the mopar engine book in the back where the break in section is....Graduated acceleration tests. I have actually broken in 2 engines with the car on the trailer. One at 2am at LAX where its is noisy all night. One at the race track. But I think maybe MuuMuu101 may be referring to some of the mechanical aspects elsewhere on the car not being ready yet, After all the car has to be dependable.

Correct. I just need to make sure the clutch is broken in properly, the rear end gears are broken in properly, any safety concern is addressed, it starts up when it needs to, no leaks, etc. When I get the car back, I'll be daily driving it to work everyday and driving it on the weekends.

My check to Tim is going out in today's snail mail, so color me there (with the new blue car).

Silly newbie question about logistics:

I am coming from out of town [stag], staying local to the track Wednesday night, and at the AirTel Thursday-Saturday nights. Therefore, I am homeless during the day Thursday. My trunk will be full of folding chair. ice chest, duffel bag, and the like. I would rather not putt around the course with all this stuff rattling around back there. Is there a place to leave my trunk junk in the pits/paddock area?

Awesome that you are coming out. It will not disappoint.
Historically, anywhere in the paddocks has been safe to leave stuff. I will have an enclosed trailer and truck if you feel compelled to want to lock your stuff up. Or more than welcome to throw it in the back of the truck for ease of access.

Yes, the blue car.

Actually, if you look at this year's Spring Fling flyer, the side with the entry form has two photos below it. One has some wing cars, and the other photo is of a blue car. It is that particular blue car I will be bringing. The fender emblem identifies it as sort of a Hello Kitty special edition.

And thanks for the leave-the-stuff-in-the-bed-of-my-pickup offers... I will definitely do something like that.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 03/10/16 05:26 PM

I just registered yesterday my '68 Barracuda convertible for this event. It's one of the funnest things I do with my car all year. I highly recommend it for those who can swing the dates before Spring Fling.

The combination of Track Day and Spring Fling make this the premier event for Mopar on the entire planet. Carlisle has its place, but for a complete Mopar experience in the heart of LA, this one tops them all!

Between the drive down on the often forgotten back roads of California, to wide open fun on the fastest track in the west, to cruising through Malibu via the famous Rock Shop café and the mountain roads of Malibu, to the coast side lunch experience, to the streets of Hollywood, to the Bob's Big Boy cruise in Burbank, to the best Mopar car show and swap meet this side of the Mississippi, to shaking hands with Jay Leno, and to the muscle car loving people (and beautiful women) of LA; this event never disappoints.

If you love Mopars, this is a must see extravaganza.

For those fence sitters, deadline for early registration is 03/19. (Next Saturday) After that day, fee goes up by $50. Day of event it goes up another $50. Save $100 and register now.

From alltimeracing.com
Registration:
This all day track event is $325. Pre-register before 3/19/15 and pay only $275.
Same Day Registration add $50. So that’s $375 same day

It really is the best day of the year!!!

Thank you! It is running really well these days. I had a few gremlins that I had to find and eliminate. Now that they are eliminated, it is running better than ever. I'm still waiting for my tuner to send me a tune that bumps the rev limiter up 500 rpm to 6600 rpm, because on warm days it will hit the rev limiter right before it shifts into 2nd. Aside from that, it feels like a low 12 second ride if not a bit faster.

I'm still waiting for my tuner to send me a tune that bumps the rev limiter up 500 rpm to 6600 rpm, because on warm days it will hit the rev limiter right before it shifts into 2nd. Aside from that, it feels like a low 12 second ride if not a bit faster. [/quote]

Looking good

Now, all I need to do is figure out if I have made a grave mistake by reserving a room right in town at the Devonshire. I talked with some [Rosamond] locals at the SoCal LX show this weekend, and they painted a less-than-flattering picture. But then... they're local and never actually stay there - they only drive by.

Hey Tom, tell ya what, I can come up and load up your car and bring it down. The warm dry climate would be good for it. I'd even send you some video of me spanking it around the track.
Sounds like fun - for you! lol

With Edwards AFB down the road I'll bet John Glenn slept there. I think that motel was in one of the scenes of "The Right Stuff"

I was really hoping to make it this year but it looks like I'm going to have to skip the track day. I've had a few financial obligations pop up lately that I didn't expect. The rain has caused me to miss work too. (Construction)
I still plan to make the Friday cruise and the show.

I got some bad luck I found my fairly new aluminum radiator developed a crack right at the top next to the fill tube! I thought it was a bad radiator cap until I pressure tested it again and found the leak. I guess I shouldn't have been driving my car so hard haha!

Easy enough fix just gotta buy another new radiator and swap everything out. Good news is I have about a month to get everything done so I am still a go for the April track day!

Not sure why it cracked but I'm suspecting a certain bump on the way back from work everyday caused it, but who knows? Just super grateful that I haven't had any overheating to cause damage!

Good news is I ordered another radiator from Be Cool and they gave me a big discount. Also I will be able to send them back this damaged radiator so they can fix it and I'll have a spare.

The Dart's out... It will not be making it. I'm currently trying to find a cheap vehicle on the market to take its place, but I'm not going to lie, the search is difficult. I've been wanting to do this track day for 5 years now and I'm really bummed that this year won't be it. Regardless, I'm taking Wed-Fri for vacation from work so, I guess I'll be at the track.. Are there any ride-alongs? I have a helmet.

Yes, you will be able to go out with me in the Dart. I should be able to arrange something else as well. Most probably with one or more of several instructors.

Im sorry to hear about the Dart. Definately dont let it keep you down. You will still have an amazing time for sure!

Off the top of my head.

-Interior needs to be finished (i.e. seats, steering column, rear seat delete panel, and roll cage). Steering column seems to be missing some bolts or has a bad bushing as there's radial play. The seats are taken out for the cage but we just need to cut and place some of that speaker box material in its place, in case I want to add a sound system in the future. Roll cage is 90% done. They just need to add in one tube and reorder a clevis.
-Tunnel needs to be cut and fabricated for the T56.
-New pedals need to be mocked in and installed including placement of the clutch master cylinder as my car was originally an automatic.
-New brake lines all around as my friend and I did a really bad job.
-Fix/weld/gusset K-frame as there's a giant crack going down the center on the bottom.
-Install PS box. No ETA for when the Borgeson unit will get in as it's on back order.
-Install Engine, radiator, exhaust and related accessories.
-Workout bugs.

Doesn't really seem all that doable in 3.5 weeks unless you think otherwise. I would have pulled the car out months ago, but I don't have the skills, tooling, or even a truck and trailer to transport it out of there.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 03/26/16 04:59 AM

I was in a similar situation about a year ago with my engine swap and why I could not attend last years event. I was lucky enough that I was able to do all the wrenching on my own car at my buddies shop and he let me work on it everyday after work.

Yeah I would say unless you have a team of friends helping out night and day thrashing, 3 weeks is not going to be enough time to get it all done and road worthy. These things take time to get sorted out. It can be done though, not saying it is impossible...

No worries Samy if you can't bring the Dart, you can ride along in my car

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 03/26/16 05:11 AM

Thanks for the support and believe me, I'm just as frustrated as you guys are. They should be aware of that as I mentioned to them that people on the forums were not happy with the progress so far. Ironically, I don't have any friends out here who own a shop or have the kind of tooling to do this. My friend from college and I did most the work with hand tools.

I'm still looking for a cheap vehicle to take to the event. Kind of roadkill-ish, but if it happens it should be fun-ny. Hopefully some sort of vehicle I can hall parts in or possibly tow so I can get some of my stuff back and start selling what I don't need. I prefer driving, even though I am still very much an amateur, but I'll enjoy ride-alongs if I can get them. The situations sucks, but there's not much I can do at this point to get the Dart there.

Like RylisPro says. It could be done. But that's more of a hero move than I can pull off at the moment. I was hoping the Dart was a little further along and would be doable with the time I could make for it with a couple of friends. We like this sort of challenge but the timing is off. Sorry man!

I figured and I greatly appreciate your offer, but I knew it wouldn't have likely happened. If you were close enough to Covina, I would have come in every day after work to chisel what I can out of it as I'd feel bad if you guys did it alone.

Still looking for some feedback on where to stay. I picked The Devonshire merely because it was one of the suggestions on the Willow Springs site. If no one want to come right out and use terms like "bedbugs" or "crackheads", then perhaps a recommendation on whatever alternate passes for "the host hotel"?

Host Hotels come and go do to getting converted into a retirement center, or closing your bar at 8 pm ... we will definately void a contract for pulling that crap! This year I couldn't find any place That would pass as Host Hotel. For convenience some are staying at the Devonshire on Rosemond Blvd, east of the fwy 1 block. It works. $90 is kinda pricey for what you get.

The Hot Tip this year is bring a sleeping bag and sleep in someones race trailer at the track. You dont need permission. Happy hour and grille all evening. Finally go to bed when you cant find anyone to fix your car, or get tired of everyones [censored]. Then wake up to the sound of race engines and the orange glow of sunrise on Willow Springs Mountain. Dont forget to wear your Race Suit Jammies.

What time will the festivities start? I might try and see if I can prepare some Middle Eastern kabobs and such as a thank you for the ride-alongs. It seems like I may find a vehicle for Spring Fling, but it probably won't be safe or worth it to take on the track.

Times and details have been laid out pretty well in previous posts. Maybe go back and reread some of my post to make sure you didn't miss any other information as well.

Festivities will start at 2 PM the day before track day on Wednesday with the unloading of the cars and happy hour and grilling followed by a BS session led by a couple former Chrysler race engineers .

If you're looking to buy a truck Day car safety issues to cook for is a battery holddown, radiator overflow, seatbelts, loose parts, etc. dependability is also a big factor. It's up to each driver to make sure their car will stay together .

I understand about waiting over a year to get your car together. It's not a bad idea to look for a car that's already in a state where you can drive it and enjoy it then at a later date you can resell it and you're really not out anything .

Yep. We'll see what I end up bringing, but I hope it's not the Scion tC. I'm kind of looking for a truck just so I can haul, tow, or go off-roading in the future. Or...

Search Japanese Crazy Van Racing on YouTube. I thought about that just for this event.

Whether it is going to be your first time driving Willow or you are still undecided, here is a track map that shows the layout. In addition there are some fun elevation changes from turns 3-6. It really is a fun track. The 2 half mile straightaways are a favorite as well. Plan on several hours of seat time.

Cop car rotor crack from last outing at California Speedway, oval/infield road course and several races prior. Upgraded to a Hat/Rotor and hub configuration.
Hubs are forged aluminum . Rotors are heat cycled. Both US made. Notice wider rotor with better cooling capabilities.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 04/15/16 06:46 AM

Approximately 3/8" each side. Because of the hat of course

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 04/15/16 06:58 AM

I'm a little confused, but is the hat sitting on the new hub? And I'm assuming that's a spacer on there.

Re: Spring Fling Speed Festival "10" Apr 21, 2016 track day - 04/15/16 05:53 PM

Cop car rotor turned down to hub as shown.
New hat/rotor simply slides on. Hat thickness is 3/8" approx. NO spacer

TBM, the Brake Man.
He did the trans am brakes with Frank Airhart in the 60's. Hurst/Airhart. Then Worked at JFZ in the 70's with Bill Wood.

These are modular construction with steel interlocking C bridges to minimize flex at racing temp. As you know AL looses half its strength at around 350F.

Drive off course... Damage front bumper, rip out wheel wells, crumple skid plate, and get rocks stuck in your tire. Don't ask me how I know.

Just got home after 6 hours drive and just want to say thanks I had a great time at the track day!

It was so cool to meet you Tim, Tim's buddy in cowboy hat and glasses who cooked the BBQ, Rick, Rick's buddy, Samy, James, Paul, Jaxson, Sterling, 68HemiB, Yowza, Mr. Tony Richards, Mr. Surber, Mrs. & Mr. Tarozzi, Randy, Linda, Sean, WingNut, Keith and anyone else I forgot sorry I'm tired haha!

`Cuda ran awesome and no major issues except for a broken hood pin. Made it home just fine.

What's going on in this photo? Something looks like it's about to fly out of the passenger window.

Have 12 minutes to spare, and want to experience what a full session felt like at SFSF 10?

Here is a video:

edit: Correction. The full video did not upload for some reason, so you get to see the first 12 minutes of a session...

I hear ya on the Daytona. Scared the crap out of me the first time he came up behind me and passed like I was standing still! What an awesome car it is.

Sean said he was going to upgrade his engine because of me though haha!
He can easily add another 50hp with a head swap while I'm kind of maxed out.
Hopefully I can put on 315's by next year and outrun him in the corners!

Ariel I thought you got the 315's on? I ordered 335's in March, they are backordered, and cancelled the order end of April. Tired of wondering IF I will get them and pretty much cancelled my season. To much stuff came up and said maybe next year.
