70 Charger: Autocross & Road Course tires needed

70 Charger: Autocross & Road Course tires needed - 04/15/15 06:00 AM

I am looking to replace the tires on my car. I have the car set up for better cornering, so I'm interested in soft compound tires for better braking, handling and traction while acclerating. While I still have about 50% tread on the back and 70% up front, my tires are 12 years old. Nitto 555 275/40/18 in front and 295/45/18 out back. I plan to run some autocross and road race events with the car. I often drive the car 2000-2500 miles a year on the street. Drag racing is not my thing, so I'd think that drag radials are the wrong choice.
I hate to leave meat on the bone, so I intend to have my next set of tires actually wear out before they get old. With this in mind, I'm thinking that a 200 treadwear might be the highest I would need. I'm currently making a few changes to the car to reduce the oversteer condition including bigger torsion bars and better shocks. I feel the tires should help. So far I have looked at the following tires:
Nitto NT 05
Nitto INVO
Michelin pilot Super Sport
Falken RT 615K

I'm interested in opinions on these or other tires other members have used. ALL opinions are appreciated on any tire, good or bad.
Thanks, Greg

Those sizes are kinda a deal breaker in 200TW.

The Nitto NT05 is available in the same sizes.
Falken has a 295/40 and a 275 35. That is close enough for me. The INVO is a 260 TW.

The Michelins are the problem. The closest they have is a 295/35. That is a bit too short for the rear IMO.

I have seen people have a lot of success on the Falkens. Super Sports would be my second choice.

Nitto NT05's have a good, grippy compound; however, from what I've heard they generally have more sidewall flex than other comparable tires. You're not really going to find a grippy tire for autocross with a 295/45. Those Falkens are good tires.

The Nittos you have now are actually better than the NT-05 or Invo because the 555 has a slightly stiffer sidewall. You would be much happier with either the Michelin or Falken.

I like the pricing and feedback I've heard regarding the Falkens.

The Falken Azenis product line has some interesting options and their sizing is close.

Current: 275-40-18
Falken: 275-35-18

Current: 295-45-18
Falken: 295-40-18

These suckers sure aint cheap! A set will run me around $1500! They are 200 treadwear though.

I run the Falkin 453s, great on the street and not to bad on the track in a 3200 lb car.

That sounds like a nice car/tire combo. Got any pics?

A lot of people like the Falken's. Looking at tires recently for both the Dart and my Scion. For decent handling tires $1000 seems to be the bare minimum cost.

Greg - are you bringing your car with new tires to the show - should be nice and warm!

I never get to take my car to the show. Being a "multi-tasker" with a pickup truck means the Charger stays at home for our show.
Maybe I should quit the club.

I'm running the 615ks. I replaced pilot super sports. Total different tire. The carcas is much stiffer besides the stickier rubber.

Folks, if you aren't running 200 TW tires you're leaving time on the table.

Yes, but there are classes such as CAM that require a minimum TW of 200.

Toyo RA1's are bada** but only have a 80-100AA rating but yet last longer than 200TW tires wtf?

I've had these new tires awhile now but have been unable to get them mounted up yet. Too busy with work and other projects.

Treadwear ratings are a relative term and there is no universal requirement saying they must meet x mileage to achieve the TW number.

I also suspect that with 200tw becoming a standard in some competitions, some manufacturers may be willing to put a 200 number on a softer tire to promote a product line and then point to the relativeness of the system to justify the change.

Totally true. Even within one manufacturers lineup the tread wear number can be nearly meaningless from tire design to a different tire design. You cannot compare one manufacturer to another based on the TW. I get that bodies have the rule to try and keep things fair but its just not a comparable statistic.

its exactly why its frustrating to me, I dig the RA1's and they are affordable, last great AND stick. They just have the wrong number on the side.
