Tremec TKO600 vs. T56 magnum

Tremec TKO600 vs. T56 magnum - 02/16/15 03:07 AM

Good debate for a Sunday afternoon.

Which do you like better? I think the TKO is easier to adapt, the T56 can handle more power. I'm not considering the T56 with the .50 6th gear.

Re: Tremec TKO600 vs. T56 magnum - 02/16/15 03:34 AM

I've had both. the TKO is a piece of junk compared to the T56. it shifts like crap. the ONLY advantage of the TKO, is that it's smaller and requires less hacking to put it into a classic.

the T56 is amazing. shifts like butter. simple to powershift, gear ratios are perfect for a 26" tire and 4.56 gear ratio in the axle. the only downside is that it's so bulky it requires extensive amounts of hacking to get it into a classic mopar.

power levels...I think they are probably both the same. the TKO is rated to 600 ft lbs, the T56 (viper spec) was "factory rated" at 650 ft lbs. both have seen much higher levels without any problems. I think the viper guys say the T56 is good to the 950 mark before they start looking for other options

I'm a t56 owner. I love the .050 6th with 3.91's , 2000rpm at 80mph. Mine is out of a Viper and it has the close ratio 1-4 and with slicks I predict low et's this summer.

Re: Tremec TKO600 vs. T56 magnum - 02/16/15 03:39 AM

I've been going back and forth on both. Each has their advantages, but I think the T56 Magnum has advantages that will work out better in the long run for me.

I have bids from Silver Sport Transmissions and American Powertrain, both the TKO600 and T56 Magnum are priced about the same. I am able to handle all of the crossmember fabrication needed to stick the T56 in there...so I will be going that route.

The TKO600 is certainly a great transmission, but when something better is available, for similar pricing and just some fab work is in my way to get there, I have to go that route.

I've had a few issues with higher mileage TKO units with the cases modified for installations into classics. I'm working with the Tremec folks who are going to look into some of our higher mileage units. They say the same things, T-56's are worth it of you don't mind hacking the car a bit.

I'm favoring the t56 myself, just leaving myself open for options. there are plenty of these transmissions out there so the support appears to be good. Hoping maybe I can score a deal on a viper trans

I would really look at the Legend LGT700 5 speed. It was the SS 700 Keisler was doing but Legend was the creator. Put one in my 70 RR it is better then the Tremec by far and easier to get in the tunnel then a T56.

This guy is selling 2 for $1200 each.

not gonna find a Viper box for much less than that, unless it's total scrap and needs a full rebuild.

I saw his CL post and really debated it as this guy is about 20 miles from me. The only reason why I didn't pull the trigger is I don't really have time right now to pick it up and one of the shifters looked pretty long (as if it was out of a truck).

T56 Magnum close ratio all the way!
Although I am a little biased...

Replace the rear seal with the updated version
Use the stock shifter with the beefy seal
and you should be good to go.
Can handle 700 hp/ft lbs which should be more than enough for our planned 426 engines but if you ever happen to break one, a replacement is as simple as a $3000 phone call away

Has a mech. or elec. speedo output
Don't even bother with the reverse lock-out solenoid it not really necessary

I have done a bunch of stuff to my car but by far the T56 Magnum has made me smile the most

Re: Tremec TKO600 vs. T56 magnum - 02/16/15 05:59 AM

For reference, my research has found the Viper T56 has been superseded by the T56 Magnum [TR6060 base].

Just so it's out there that the T56 Magnum is -not- a "Viper T56". Apparently better and stronger in several areas. The specifics evade me at the moment however.

That said, I am finding myself wanting to spend the money on a brand new transmission [T56 Mag] rather than a used one out of a "Super Car". My luck with used parts isn't all that great..

My car has always seemed right for a passon trans since I out the 833 in. It would make the most sense and do everything that I need.

Unfortunately with the way the waiting list is, I don't know if that will ever happen.

I'll start seriously looking at the T56 next year.

I remember reading up on the differences, and they are subtle. both transmissions use the same main case, but I think in the TR6060 (T56 Magnum -- a TR6060 with a TKO tailhousing instead of the OEM tailhousing) the gears became thinner to allow for wider bearings which helped up the power holding capability. There were also some other minor changes with the shift detents, reverse lock out, etc. that allows the newer version to be more easily swapped to aftermarket applications--it has more "direct bolt on" shift locations available. the OEM T56 only has 1 shift location and requires complete tear down and custom modification if you want to convert the front inspection plate to a shift location

The Magnum/tr6060 Viper version are same internally except ratios. They both have internal oil pumps and the GEARs are wider for power handling which made the synchros and sliders narrower.

The Vipers do not have a pump. Only the 2015 Viper and Challenger have the pump. The Corvette and Camaro have the pump. The Corvette's mid plate is totally different. The mid plate on the Viper is partially machined to accept the pump, but the shaft needs to be have been drilled to make it work! Here is a 2014 Viper mid plate showing the pump recess. Notice the pump nose shaft cavity in the plate is not machined and no bushing present. The oil passages where the cooler fittings attached are also not machined.

Well ive been misinformed then. I knew the Challys didn't get pumps, and I think they skimped in other areas of those too, maybe I assumed the Vipers got pumps. Could've swore Allpar or somewhere said the the TR6060's in Vipers had pumps. Also the 14+ Vipers have like a 2.26 first gear and closer ratio than ever. What fluid does that trans you have call for? ATF?

Your right, they were both supposed to since the introduction of the 6060, they just never did it until '15. That's Tremec's fault, not Chrysler. We even watched the MasterTech vid on it at the dealer!!

Both cars still take ATF+4.

I run a TKO 600 because it's what I got a deal on (private party new keisler 'kit'). I'm happy with it. Swapping to a .82 OD soon and I'm sure I'll like it more (from the .64). Mine shifts well, and was relatively easy to install, as part of the tranny crossmember got to stay in the car.

If starting from scratch, I would personally choose a t56 magnum OR a t56 viper ($1200 used). But anything on the list from the tko and up should work great for 95% of the builds on this site.

I rank the available transmissions:
T56 magnum
TR-6060 mustang / camaro / viper
T56 viper
tko 600
tko 500
tko
TR-6060 challenger
t56 F body

Is that a primarily road course driven decision, I assume? I was looking at the 0.63 'mag

Yes. Currently I shift at 6500, putting me at 4100 or so in OD (.64). With the .82 I will shift at 6500 and drop to ~5300.

I'll probably also change the rear gear to get everything where I want it for BBORR.

The .64 is great for cruising with the 3.60 gear.

Cool, sounds good. I run 3.91, but have all the stuff to setup a different gear set if I need to.

Go a friend of mine in Pasadena that rebuilt my suregrip and is setting up the 3.73's in in 742. I can ask...
