These are pretty common for Street Rod and such now. You can get them with aluminum pump bodies (1.4lbs lighter than identical iron version).

Like this: http://www.detroitspeed.com/Steering/090901-aluminum-steering-pump.html

I bought this at the Fall Fling show last Saturday for $5. I figured it would be a no brainer aluminum housing (most are iron) for mockup. This turned out to be brand spanking new, just covered in dust!!

They also use this same pump housing setup in Circle Track cars for remote reservoirs and AN fittings.

I've also got a used KRC pump and remote reservoir and lines for mockup.

Deal is the "Dodge 360" bracket KRC sells is for a Magnum motor and you have to add a brace to make it work: http://www.jegs.com/i/KRC/612/31515000/10002/-1?parentProductId=

Quote:

Note: This bracket uses three mounting points. Some engines may not have the upper right mount (facing the bracket) and may require the creation of a brace.

AndyF? (www.arengineering.com)

Jerry? (www.sdconcepts.com)

others?

I think because KRC list's a "Dodge 360" bracket, the rest of the aftermarket thinks the market is covered for this part/need.

I was just thinking about this. Our PS pumps are so large and bulky. I was wondering why someone hasn't done this yet.

I have made brackets, twice, for that pump. First on the BB, and then to my Gen III. Real easy to make. I cant remember if I used a SB Chevy block mount or head mount bracket, but those are relatively cheap and using those you can make a mount to adapt them to your engine with some 1/4" aluminum plate. Heres a pic of the BB.....

If anyone is interested, I have this mount and the V belt aluminum pulley still. Shaft on mine is .662 ish. Another thing of note is the smaller the shaft diameter, the bigger (better) the bearing is on these pumps.

Just curious... How do the specs on this pump differ from our 45 year old pumps?

I don't have any specs, but I can tell you it worked awesome when I ran it. I ran a cooler and RP Max EZ fluid just because heat is the enemy of all things hydraulic. My Borgeson loved it and stock pumps work fine on Borgesons???

Same exact pump bolted to my 6.1 here. Bracket not "cleaned up" yet.

I'm just looking for other options. I figured something could be adapted that was smaller to work with out PS boxes.

Find a better option let me know. 6.5 lbs w/ bracket and pulley.

By "other" I meant deterring the stock setup. I think the idea of using this pump is great. I'd definitely want to do this swap in the future.

The .662 is the diameter of the one I have pictures in my first post.

The KRC I have has the same diameter where it meets the seal (and I assume bearing). But the KRC has a different end to take a nut and spline type pulley.

Some features and benefits listed for the unit sold on the Detroit Speed and Engineering site:

(Caution other pump and reservoirs may have different PSI settings and possibly flow rates)

Quote:

Power Steering Pump - Aluminum with Integral Reservoir

Detroit Speed's power steering pumps are compatible with any power steering gear or rack and pinion. All pumps are completely new and are not remanufactured. DSE pumps deliver constant flow under given operating pressures. The transverse bearing compact pumps (TC pumps) are less sensitive to radial belt loading than other types of pumps.

Detroit Speed and Engineering power steering pump specifications:

• Flow = 3.0-3.4 gallons per minute at 1500 rpm
• Pressure relief = 1250-1450 psi
• TC pumps offer high efficiency and quite operation
• All DSE pumps are compatible with Vintage Air's Front Runner accessory drive system
• Features a 0.662" shaft diameter
• All pumps, including those with an integral reservoir, fit within the Front Runner confines
• All pumps are available with Mustang II flow control valve. This flow control fitting will restrict the flow to approximately 2 gal/min while retaining the
appropriate pressure in the system

This power steering pump offers the same performance characteristics as our other pumps, and it saves 1.4 pounds over the cast iron version. The aluminum housing has a cast aluminum finish and the integral reservoir makes for a clean, compact package.

Tech Tip: Pulleys must be installed with proper power steering pulley installation tool; KD Tool #2897. Do not use a hydraulic press!

Note: You will need to add a pressure fitting to your GM Type II pump to complete this hose kit. You can choose from 091702 hardline pressure tube, 090401 outlet fitting, or 091801 banjo pressure fitting.

I'm guessing the flow rate and PSI are in this same ballpark for other parts store replacement units.

I do not think this is specially made for Detroit Speed and Engineering. IMHO, it's a new off the shelf replacement unit for some production car. I don't know that for sure, but I have a strong feeling.

Hey cool! I have one of those pumps too!

I was going to use it on a 572 engine I was going to build.

So this can be used on a Gen 3 engine right? What pulley and other stuff would I need? Part numbers?

Thanks!

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 11/02/14 05:40 AM

I agree Steve^^^^. These pumps are used on Cummins Dodges, SRT's, Malibus, Corvettes, Vipers, Cherokees, and some Imports. The GM models are where the reservoir came from on yours and mine though, but I cant tell you what model. The Mopars usually have a funky detached/semi-remote reservoir, that is fine, but ugly.

I cant remember the part number, but its a Dorman Ram 1500 PS pulley on mine for IIRC a 4.7. I used a 1/2" aluminum plate and adapted it to the cylinder head on my 6.1. It ends up about 1/2 a groove off of perfect so when the time comes I will just use my pulley puller to get it perfect.

The actual pump is very small. This is the pump the Circle Track racing power steering manufacturers have chosen to design their systems around and produce aftermarket custom parts for. There are flow control valves readily available to change the flow rate and other parts to change the PSI.

It's a proven unit with less expensive and readily available parts for you individual customization.

See, this is what I like about it... Whenever I look at pictures of people who put turbos on small blocks in A-bodies, they always say they had to convert to a manual steering box because the old pump was in the way. If I ever decide to go that route, it's nice to know there is another option to aid having both PS and boost.

KRC, Speedway, CV Products, and lots of other Circle Track supply places make lots of aluminum pulleys for it. I have an aluminum V-groove pulley that is 6" diameter. Don't know if that is the diameter I need, just picked it up for cheap to start mockup.

Just laying out my cache of power steering stuff

Top left: 6" diameter Aluminum V-groove pulley for press on 0.662 shafts.

Top pump: is a cast iron bare pump without reservoir. Exterior looks almost identical to the aluminum one w/reservoir attached. I believe the reservoir would interchange between the two.

Left pump: is aluminum with attached reservoir.

Center: pump is KRC p/n 20-0157 and KRC adapter p/n 30000 for a Chevy Circle Track car.

Lower Right: Remote aluminum reservoir has internal baffles and has a roll bar mount bracket attached to it.

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 11/02/14 06:36 AM

Seems the KRC pump p/n 20-0157 and KRC adapter p/n 30000 I have has a different smaller bolt pattern than the aluminum one with the attached plastic reservoir.

Question is what bolt pattern are the Mopar KRC mounting plates made for???

This KRC pump has had the thread holes in the body drilled out removing the threads to fit bigger bolts

Yes, the KRC bracket came with that pump.

I've got about $40 tied up in what you see collected for over 10 years.

I just started the electric PS conversion for my AAR. I have the motor attached to the column and have to measure and weld the shafts. Fits nicely under dash and will use the manual box. Will be under $200 including the controller and will make the Gen3 Hemi conversion easier. WIll do a write up when done.

Steve I bet they have both sizes from KRC whether its an aluminum pump or iron. If you look at the Mopar KRC bracket it has 2 holes for the bottom bolt.

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 11/03/14 01:35 AM

I'm using a Profile iron body pump from Speedway. This is a carbon copy of the aluminum KRC unit. I used stock brackets to mount mine up. The rear mount I did have to shim with a few washers and I had to modify a chevy alternator bracket for the adjustment arm, but otherwise, nothing trick to get it mounted.

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 01/19/15 12:31 AM

So for the Unisteer low flow pump that I have in my pic above, I am pretty sure that I have this control valve installed which enables the GM type II pump to be used with a Ford rack and pinion.

According to this article
http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/chassis-suspension/ccrp-1304-gm-power-steering-secrets/
there is just a size difference in the hole of the fittings stock .150 on left and low flow .093 on right

There is also a small hole one the side of the fitting which is a bypass hole "B"

http://www.archivedsites.com/techconnect/2009/09/power-steering-pump-service.html

Since I run hydroboost, my plan is just to drill out the fitting. In theory it should all work and even if I screw everything up, I can always get another fitting for cheap.

With the availability of a bracket soon, it will make more sense to use these Type II pumps on our Mopars

Just an fyi, I have 4 brackets made to adapt these to a Gen III either by itself are as a complete kit with bolts and the right pulley for LX front covers. I also have a BB bracket and aluminum V belt pulley setup as well. PM with any questions. Not making a killing at all just want to get Mopar guys some good stuff to run on these hot rods. Alex,Brian and Ariel are all gonna use one so far so I figured I would get the word out that more are available.

PM some details, I'm interested in a Gen III and the Big Block setup. I wouldn't mind having spares for the Dart in case I ditch my manual box and the Satellite could stand to drop a couple pounds too.

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 01/24/15 03:49 AM

I got 72Swinger's power steering bracket and its a nice piece. I opted to get mine in raw aluminum so that I could drill more holes into it. I think I will drill a hole for the center mounting point so that it can be supported from the back side

One of the holes is 5/16 coarse thread and since my pump uses 8mm x 1.25 bolts I will have to drill out the mounting holes to fit a bolt long enough since all of the 3 inch grade 8 bolts at the local hardware was not threaded all the way. I am guessing the OEM bolt is not threaded all the way either. No big deal.

I'm glad I got the bracket. It's simple enough to make but, spending the time to get the material, cut, drill and design my own bracket would have cost way more than what I paid

Thanks Emil!

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 01/24/15 04:51 AM

You can go ahead and add an extra bolt if you want but I don't think it is necessary at all. All of the force on that pump is pulling it toward the bolt you are wanting to add. On top of that every circle track pump I have seen only uses the 2 I do as well. The pumps sit flat against the bracket and have no way of wiggling. Feel free to do whatever you want with it, but from what I have seen you will not gain anything.

I need an education on these pumps. I'm building a k-frame that will be using the flaming river steering rack and a few other bits I've machined up.
http://www.flamingriver.com/index.php/products/c0014/s0005/FR40022

They recommend this pump, they advertise a variable pressure? How does this work? Some sort of bleed off valve at high pressure? Quote "Our Variable Pressure Low Flow Pumps work with our Power Steering Racks and are available with Serpentine and V-Belt Pulleys"

http://www.flamingriver.com/index.php/products/c0012/s0003/FR1570

I really like the look of this pump( part # PS-9008-AL-AR ) and that I get to choose the pulley diameter. but I'm wondering if it will produce too much pressure for the rack and leak? or..?
http://www.jonesracingproducts.com/ps.html#3106

These flow control valves.... will they work with all the type II pumps?

Any thoughts? Insights, words of wisdom?

Re: Any Sm/Blk brackets for this Alum. P/S Pump setup yet? - 04/08/15 11:36 PM

I've got a Firm Feel box and I've swapped to a modern hemi. I purchased this (speedway motors) in 1150 psi. It's a reboxed pump in a lower flow and pressure setting with a reservoir attached.

I just wanted a simple hookup with an OEM look, and this did what I wanted.

The pump only required me to open the holes up to 5/16" from 8mm with a drill bit and it dropped on with Emil's Bracket on my hemi. It was on in about an hour. The only thing I don't like is that it's got a 16mm fitting for the output, but speedway had a 16mm to -6AN conversion fitting. I purchased a -6AN fitting from firm feel to go to my powersteering box, and I'll be using the AQP high pressure steel fittings and hose for my pressure line. Nothing fancy, and a complete pump set up for about $250.

The pulley is a 5.5" 6 rib unit with a .662 shaft diameter. There are a ton of sizes available.

One other thing that I like is that it has a bearing for the front support. All of the other "passenger" car pumps use a bushing. This is similar to the Corvette and CTS-V pumps with a lower pressure.
