to mini tub or not

to mini tub or not - 10/16/14 01:43 AM

Trying to figure out the budget needed to get everything done this winter. I was talking to a friend about doing the offset shackles and he mentioned that if i'm going to move the perches i might as well mini tub it.

I was planning on running a square setup on the car and really didn't think a mini tub was necessary. You guys have been down this road so i figured i would ask for input. Plan on dr diff cobra brakes f/r with hotchkis upper control arms and leafs.

haven't had it done myself, but seems like something that cab be done at any time down the road.

fwiw, my car has been apart way to long, i am now all for the least amount of work possible to get it back on the road, so maybe i am a little biased.

what wheel specs are you going to use?

I am hoping to run 285/35-18 square setup on an 18 x 9 wheel. My co-worker has several wheels off his sti that i am going to test fitment with once i get the brake swap done.

I have a 18x9.5 +38 and +43 with 275/35 18 tires to use for testing. If I could get 275s all the way around with just the offset kit, I'd be ok with that.

The +38 might work all the way around with a 1/2" spacer in the rear and a degree or two negative camber in the front. The +43 might be ideal in the front with little or no camber though.

I doubt a 285 will fit with a stock well and spring location. An offset perch set might make it close.

The fight you may have with tire fit would be greatly reduced with a minitub and spring relocation. My 275 tire Dart is a tight fit with a 3/4 spring relocation and some lip trim/bending.

Guy forgot to bring the rest of the wheels to test but had an 18 x 9.5 +20 275/35r18 to mess with. Front fit well, cleared the fender and hit the stock upper control arm when turning as expected. The rear hit the leafs but had good clearance to the fender. Added 1 1/2" of spacers to the rear and got the wheel pretty well centered. I guessing with offset hanger kit i should be able to run +20 all around and be ok without having to tub it.

Buy the wheels off him. The red and gold look good.

I wish, they are the race wheels off his sti. Not sure what to do for wheel style. Thinking maybe fr500 or something more classic.

Do you still have stock front rotors? Rear drums? Im shocked a +20 is fitting, must be some different juju going on with the Valiants. Also its a good idea to un-crank your torsion bars and let it set on the bumpstops THEN turn steering wheel back and forth.

It still has stock brakes all around. I couldn't bolt the wheels on tight enough to drop the car all the way down due to different bolt pattern. I think with offset spring kit and dr diffs rear disk kit i should be able to get the rears to fit with a small spacer if necessary. If i have to use a spacer, i will have to roll the rear lips.

So basically you're converting to my setup minus the offset shackles? Which rear end do you have? A or B Body?

Yep, doing drdiff's cobra brakes all around, a body rear.

Do the hotchkis leafs have a 1/2" or 5/8" front eye hole? Getting ready to order the kit from drdiff and it shows 2 different ones. Anyone ever use these leafs with the offset kit?
