Buttonwillow Dec. 20th-21st, 2014 - 10/08/14 03:40 AM

I still got the track day itch and want to go again ASAP!
In the process of finishing grad school though which sucks... the soonest I can go out is Dec. 20th at Buttonwillow

If I can get the Dart running within the next couple weeks and am able to work out the bugs, I might be able to make it out there.

That would be awesome!

Re: Buttonwillow Dec. 20th, 2014 - 10/08/14 05:30 AM

Are you getting there a day early or something? It's a 2.5 hour drive for me which means I'd have to leave my house at about 4:30 am. I'd just be worried about the 150 mile trip out there and possibly getting stuck.

Re: Buttonwillow Dec. 20th, 2014 - 10/08/14 05:41 AM

I usually head out the night before a track day and get some if any sleep at a motel. When we went to Thunderhill West my little brother drove another car with tools, tires, food & water etc. My buddies also brought gear in their cars.

Going on Satuday means you have Sunday to drag the car back if the worst were to happen at the track.

I would always help out a fellow track day driver in need as much as possible. I would suggest to have a buddy go with you to help out if needed as we live in opposite directions.
Its a 3 hour drive for me also

Does registration usually fill up early? Unfortunately, I don't think I've got a friend down here who likes road racing or has a car in near enough condition to do so.

Actually I have never signed up with Speed Ventures before, I have never been to Buttonwillow either. I would figure it would fill up fast, that's why I posted this so early.

You don't have to bring another person and car to drive the track, just a reliable support car for emergencies and such. My little brother was driving a beater Corolla.

Which just happens to handle better than my `Cuda

I'll ask my coworker about it. I know he used to run his GTI up there once in awhile. Now, whenever he goes, he takes his Ducati motorcycle.

Weather will most likely be cold.
I doubt wet, as California is currently in a drought

I'm going to have to miss it unfortunately. My Dart won't be done and something came up that weekend.

That's a much better date for me. I'll be done with school by then. Hopefully, I'll be able to take a vacation day.

I ran into some bad luck today. My 340's 40 year old vibration damper decided to come apart which made a hole in the timing cover.

I have to yank the timing cover and get a new damper. Sucks cause I really wanted to drive the 340 to Buttonwillow before I replacing it next year. Oh well that's life...
Still going to the track day though, in my other car

That definitely sucks. I'm waiting to hear from the wheel distributor on wheels and I may order new shocks. Then I should have 99% of everything to start putting the Dart back together in a couple weeks (after finals). However, my friend may not be able to help me this time as I heard he rejoined the Baja club.

Are you planning on replacing the 340 with a Gen III?

Re: Buttonwillow Dec. 20th-21st, 2014 - 11/30/14 04:49 AM

how big is the hole; can you JB weld it? i have had JB weld on a cracked oil pan going on 5 years now, so it can definitely take the conditions.

Tomorrow sounds like...

Sucks on the wayward damper.

The hole is huge! The entire underneath of the timing mark section from 10 -0 -10 is GONE. No amount of JB weld is going to fix that haha!

I'm kinda glad it happened because I was beginning to doubt myself on how I assembled the engine like I forgot something? My Dad laughed at me and said you did nothing wrong the 40 year old damper just happened to fail

I wish I could work on it tomorrow, can't because I'm about to be done with Grad school and have papers to finish.

Actually, I have always wanted to replace my iron block 340 and go all aluminum for years. I was building an all aluminum 572 Predator engine until I realized that setup was overkill for the track

Not if you can put it in the back seat.
