Anybody into trucks?

Anybody into trucks? - 08/11/14 03:02 PM

I recently picked up an 80 stepside with plans for a hot rod. Lately though I've been thinking how cool it would be to have a classic truck handle like a SCCA car. I can't get it out of my head so I might as well look into it. Anybody been there done that? Any thoughts or advice?

Look into No Limit Engineering. They make some pretty trick stuff to convert older trucks to a better IFS and REALLY slam it down. They have a wickedly fast tube chassis truck with C-10 skin on it that uses their suspension. Usually kills everything at the events. BIg $$ to do what you want and be fast.

Thanks but they got nothing Mopar. Me thinks I'm in uncharted waters and there be monsters.

Tony, some guy was using an early 2000's Durango @ Carlisle this year, did pretty good considering it looked top heavy.

I say go for it.

With the proliferation of inexpensive, V8 trucks available out there, I really tried to like them for performance use, but I can't get past the idea that they are still trucks.

Yeah, I know there are some pretty hot GM trucks being used for handling out there but it still doesn't work for me.

The whole Nascar truck thing, mehh. Even the local short track trucks are a good reason for me to hit the head and buy some popcorn. Sure, they can put on some good races, but the whole truck thing flat out doesn't inspire me.

If you can build one, more power to ya.

Although Dakota's are heavy at 4,000 lbs for a V8 Reg cab truck, they can be hopped up quite easily and make for fun rides

Hey Bill, missed seeing you at the nats. As you can see the 64 is gone and I have a new money pit. I'm not interested in racing this thing, I just want to improve the handling as it's not going to be hauling anything much but coolers and lawn chairs. Just looking to make a cool driver that's a bit different.

What are the specs on your wheels? I know that 17s with a 5.5" backspace clear as long as there's no dirt or dust. It's that close.

On the cheap this is what I'm doing:

Found a 3/4 ton 2wd for a donor, get the brakes (bigger), front sway bar (bigger), front coils (stiffer), lower control arms (for lowering, search the truck section on how to do this).

Keep my 1/2 ton rear leafs, subtract a leaf to lower it (and soften the rear).

Get a rear sway bar from a 2Gen 3/4 ton and install.

Enjoy.

In the plan for my old beater, I even located the donor for $50. Just need to get the time to do it.....

I've read where people had doubled the front and rear sway bars and I wondered about 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Sounds like you have a plan.

wheels are 18x9 front with a 245 45 18 tire front and 20x10 rears with a 275 40 20 tire. they should be more appropiate once its lowered. may switch to 20x9 for the front and a 315 35 20 rear tire though

Do you remember the offset or back space on the wheels?
