Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 07/28/14 03:35 AM

My local S2000 group is hosting a couple of track days at Thunderhill West up in Willows CA, Sept 20-21st if anyone is interested to join or just come up and watch.
http://blacktrax.blogspot.com/2014/07/blacktrax-test-tune-7-thunderhill.html?m=0

Thunderhill West is the new section of the the track that just opened up recently and this event is so people can learn it.

I will be bringing my `Cuda on that Saturday only as long as I get all the electronics, wiring, windshield etc. sorted out

I figured to post this up in advance so people have time to prepare their cars

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 08/12/14 07:33 AM

A little update:

Car is pretty much ready to run but feels heavy due to the cage

Got an alignment today -2.5 camber, 4° caster and toe close to zero as possible

Windshield is in and all the electronics are working. I still have to figure out how to make a track map in order to log lap times on the Racepak

I fabbed up back brace that bolts to the back of my Racetech 9119 seat and it makes a world of difference as the seating position feels super solid vs. without one

Still have to swap out brake fluid and pads

and work on weight reduction like cutting out the door crash beams and swiss cheese the interior panels

Also I have to dial in the hotchkis single adjustables as they are only set to 14 clicks up from the softest setting

Slowly making progress but I still have a month to shake things down, fix some small issues and fine tune everything

Looks good man!

What's the weight and weight bias?
Posted By: RylisPro

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 08/12/14 04:59 PM

I'm not sure about the weight or bias yet?
Probably 30 rear/ 1000 front
Going to take the truck scale after I cut out the door beams to see how fat she still is

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 08/13/14 08:54 PM

I just drove through a local certified truck scale and the car's weight was 3,580 lbs.
That is with roughly half a tank of fuel and I weigh about 140 lbs. myself

I figure that the car is about 3,440 lbs. with fluids, half a tank of gas (11 gallons of 22 gallon fuel cell),gutted interior, race seats, full cage, fiberglass hood/ trunk/ lower front valence, etc.

since a gallon is about 8.34 lbs., 11 more gallons for a full fuel cell would add another 92 lbs. bringing the curb weight to approx. 3,532 lbs.

No idea on front/rear weight bias though?

I have not taken the door beams yet and I have a cast iron 340 up front. Still lots of work needed to further reduce weight

No wonder my gas mileage sucks

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 08/14/14 03:54 PM

With a fiberglass hood and a small block, you could estimate the weight break at 55% front bias and be in the ball park at 1969# front weight with a half tank and you in the seat.

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 08/24/14 02:25 AM

I just cut out my door bars not too difficult just needed the right tools

The driver side is on the left weighs 10 lbs. and pass. on the right weighs 24lbs.

The weird thing is that the driver side does not have a backplate structure like the pass. side and probably would have been useless in a side impact.

I'm just glad they are out and car weighs 34 lbs. less.
I'm going to start building my own skyscraper with these beams haha!

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/16/14 06:07 AM

I was very fortunate to get MrAngry in my car and get some feedback for the track today

He said that I needed brake and steering tuning. The rear brakes lock up way too fast and that I need to dial in the combination of my hydroboost unit, master cylinder setup and that I need to install a proportioning valve.

For steering he recommended the borgeson box.

Unfortunately I am not able to address the issues before my track day this Saturday so I will be driving very carefully 6/10ths as not to lock up the brakes and spinout.

He said some other stuff about the car that will be evetually be shown in a little video

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/16/14 06:17 AM

You should tweak your adjustable prop so you are rear biased instead of front. You will be less likely to spin and you will be able to slow down faster. It would be better to go to far front biased rather than keep it rear biased.

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/17/14 03:29 PM

Gasoline ranges from 5.8 to 6.6 lbs/gal according to "Alternative Fuels Guidebook (Bechtold, SAE)", not 8.34 lbs/gal. 8.34 lbs/gal would have water (~8.0 lbs/gal) floating on it rather than the other way around.

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/17/14 03:45 PM

Whoops I had no idea! Ok then 6.6lbs. x 11 gal.= 72.6
72.6 + 3,440-34 =3,478.6

Car weighs approx. 3,479 lbs. with a full fuel cell and fluids.
Still need to cut out more weight

I ran a 1:32.50 so far. A good lap is 1:30s
Puking oil from breather and dipstick and lost a header bolt but still having fun!

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/20/14 11:47 PM

Whoops my bad! The Racepak said I had a time if 92.50 but I actually ran a 1:47

This is GPS data from the Race Chrono app
I never did figure out the Racepak
It was a super hot day and were all exhausted
Pics to come soon!

Very smart for getting feedback and help from MrAngry in person.

And very cool for MrAngry to offer his personal help!!!

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/24/14 12:03 AM

Looking good. That is a 295 squared tire setup on your car IIRC?
Posted By: RylisPro

Re: Thunderhill West Sept. 20th 2014 - 09/24/14 01:06 AM

Yeah 295 squared BFG Rivals just gripped. The car ran great! It just needs a better driver as I wasn't going as fast as the 1:30 guys. I need to deal with some oil leaks but other than that it made it 130 miles up to the track, ran hard in 90 deg. weather and made it back without missing a beat!

Hi, didn't want to hijack Goody's post about racing. I work every other weekend and haven't looked at schedule lately. Would love to get together and check out your car. You could come up and stay the night before or after if you wanted since its about 25 min away. Need to get a oin hole repaired in radiator from last track day.

No worries I hadn't planned on another track day until next year. I will be super busy finishing grad school.
Just feels lonely being the oldest car at the track. I'm a rolling chicane
