power steering issues...I need some help - 07/12/13 05:51 AM

Was changing out the transmission on my '68 440 Satellite and decided to change out the power steering gear box cause the seals were a little leaky. The old box worked just fine. Got the new Cardone box in and transfered the high pressure fitting on top and the return valve body. Put it in and got it running, and it took two hands to turn it. Very hard. Figured it was just a crappy cheap box so I put the old one back it that worked just fine. Put the fitting and return body back on and it doing the same thing.

The steering linkage is not binding up, its like there is no belt on the pump. I seem to be getting good flow coming out of pump and what appears to be good return coming out of gear box.

Before I did all this I could steer it with one finger. Now its impossible to drive. I've put it back the way it was. Not sure if maybe the pump just happen to go out at the same time I changed the gear box.

I'm really scratching my head on this one.

I did bleed it. I probably have an hour of run time on it at this point, turning the wheel lock to lock.

Sounds like you've got a bad box. I'm sure someone will chime in and tell you what the issue is.

I would just change the seals on the old box (<$10) and put it back in. I changed the input shaft seal in ~10 minutes, which solved my leak I had a few months ago.

I've put the old box back in. It's giving me the same issues.

Did you cycle the wheel back and forth with the front jacked up and the engine off?

Okay, got it fixed. The pressure spring/piston set up inside the pump was stuck. Pulled the hose at the pump off, pulled the fitting out of the pump. The spring and piston should have came almost all the way out on it's own. Worked it with a screw driver in and out till the spring pushed the piston out. Cleaned it, put it back, works great.

Only took me a weeks worth of work to figure out it was a 3 minute fix. The guys as Steer & Gear directed my where to make the fix.
