What kind of pads are you planning to use?

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 05:55 PM

I didn't try to look for a weight savings on my brakes. The front rotors alone are 27 lbs each.

When I picked this stuff up 7 years ago there were no big brake kits for old Mopars so I built my own.

They do fill out an 18" wheel nicely.

The stopping power is impressive. There is no fade unless you ride the brakes for a mile or two. The stops are smooth and short.
After driving with modern brakes on an old car you won't ever want to go back.

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 08:24 PM

Yes it looks like vette stuff in the front kit and mustang cobra in the rear? But it does not say Ford any where .Baer said a 15/16 master. I havent installed it all yet and we are all snowed in anyhow.

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 08:36 PM

I'm pretty sure those are Ford Mustang derived parts both front and rear. I assume that is a 13 x 1.0 inch rotor up front?

Those are OEM quality calipers that Bear buys from the same vendors who sell to Ford. (PBR for the front calipers and a company in Brazil for the rear calipers) Mustang pads should work on both ends of the car.

DoctorDiff sells the same basic parts but I think he charges a little less for his kit. That is a nice setup for a street driver. Much better than anything Ma Mopar ever put on the muscle cars.

Lots of links about Cobra brake upgrades on the net. Here is one that shows the same basic parts: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2005/02/BigBrakes/index.php
Posted By: feets

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 08:58 PM

I wouldn't doubt that they're OEM parts. It's a good way to get quality stuff on the cheap.
When I was digging through the brakes used by the cars we have at work only the Bentley and Rolls-Royce brakes actually had the car manufacturer names cast into them.
Some of the Mercedes AMG brakes made by Brembo had the Mercedes star on them.
The vast majority of the calipers had no auto makers names on them, not counting stickers.

Since they made custom hubs to fit the car, chances are the rotors are off the shelf parts too. Again, this drastically lowers cost without degrading quality.

There's nothing at all wrong with using stuff like that. You can save a bunch of cash and add some serious upgrades to your 40+ year old car.

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 09:15 PM

You were close, most of the Vette brake calipers these days are sourced from PBR just like the Mustang calipers. But the Vette stuff is a little different and I don't think pads interchange. I'm about 99% certain that the Baer Mopar kit uses a Mustang Cobra caliper and pad.

The Baer rotor is also a Mustang Cobra rotor, but I think they are machined for a Mopar sized center hole. So a parts store Cobra rotor probably will not fit.

The Baer stuff is really high quality. They do a good job with their kits which is why I often recommend their stuff to people.
Posted By: AndyF

Re: My new big brakes! - 02/05/12 09:22 PM

The high end cars all use Brembo as their caliper supplier. Merc, Porsche, Ferrari, etc.

The next rung down is the pony cars and they basically all use PRB brakes. Some of the really powerful pony cars upgrade to Brembo stuff on special editions or race packages.

There are various Mopar kits available that use either PBR or Brembo calipers. My Viper kit uses Brembo calipers as does some of DoctorDiffs kit. He also sells a PBR based kit like Baer's. XV sells a PBR kit also.

Baer also makes some high end calipers themselves. The 4T, 6P and 6S kits are all custom Baer designs.

(I covered all of this in my B-body book. I did several chapters on brake systems in the book.)

Front rotor is 1.1 thick and the hat height is 2.25 ,more like C4 vette style /size. Got the kits from Jegs front PN 4141006 and rear PN 4142020 .A little hint they do price match .

Re: My new big brakes! - 04/05/12 05:15 PM

Ok Im back , I installed the rear system first and it went well . Every thing fit properly with out any massaging , however the method to center the caliper bracket was either backwards or a misprint on the diagram because it only took half as much shims ,.060 ,as it said, per side ,amazingly even ,to center over rotor .Rear bearings also fit and adjusted properly too.I torqued it all to spec ,bled the air wth new Honda brake fluid and road tested with the factory front brakes still on to isolate the rear upgrade before installing the front 13" system .Dont let any one tell you a rear disk upgrade isn't a worthwhile improvement ,WOW , firmer pedal, less effort and a linear feel to steering under braking! I am very pleased with this brake kit. Will get some more pics of the rear installed system , the Baer rotors look really great as a bonus .

Re: My new big brakes! - 04/07/12 06:11 PM

I am using a AR adapted late model 1.03 alloy master cylinder unit at this time , no booster,on a manual drum brake pedal the car was made with .A Baer tech said to use a 15/16 or 1" master ,so I might need to change it after the front swap but I'm going to try the one mounted on the car now.The pedal effort went down with the rear disk swap and its a fairly small piston caliper at 38mm,or 1.5",so perhaps the large rotors, high friction ceramic pads, braided flex lines and stiff alloy calipers that came from Baer will compensate for the smaller piston size .I'll soon find out and post.

Very tasteful.

I'm running pretty much the same front kit on an E... just a few years older. The front calipers have a relatively small piston area and like lots of pressure. With the Bear suplied master and a 9" single diaphram booster brake pressure is barely adequate. Front/rear bias on mine is OK with 11" rear drums and the prop valve adjusted all the way out. I'm betting you will want the smaller diameter master after you try it out.

On my setup, I might try a smaller master but don't think that will be enough. Dual diaphram or hydro boost is in my future I think.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/01/12 02:51 AM

My manual brake car should have a better pedal ratio than a power brake car but I am prepared to swap out masters, I will try this one first cause it is easy to do it that way right now, so well see .

Ok I couldnt wait, so i finished up the front install, will post pics later cause the camera batteries are dead as usual,.After 10 or 20 miles of bedding the pads, WOW very nice pedal feel and great stopping power.I don't think I really need a smaller bore master either .I should measure the bore on the one I have now cause I thought it was a 1.03 size but I never physically measured it.Nice increase in G force and the balance is good also. The hardest part was the little bit of grinding on the spindle to fit the billet adapter .Either the old Mopar knuckle is very hard or my $55 snap on bit is dull, other than that it all went smooth .

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/04/12 01:07 AM

I jumped on the Feets bandwagon with the AMG stuff.... 14.25" rotors, and recently went from the 4 piston Brembo's I had to the 8 piston ones. Course it's only on a smaller little Holden Torana.

(this was at mockup, going to be painting the calipers red to match the rears I figure.)

Handy that the 8 piston and 4 piston calipers both use the same mounting pattern. Just a couple minute swap between the 2 of them.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/04/12 04:32 AM

Actually, if you have a few tools around the brackets can be pretty basic to make. I designed and sorted mine out in a few hours, then just cut out the metal to make them, a little bit of and some .

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/04/12 11:00 PM

Little bit of a comparison...
A PBR caliper...2 piston one from Oz used on various Ford and GMs here.

A Brembo 4 piston one from an SRT 8.

A Brembo 8 piston one from various AMG cars.

I was going to use the first one originally on my car but skipped that and went right to the second one...and now going with the 3rd

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/04/12 11:19 PM

Now that the FedEx smite is over, Oz has already torn into the new calipers and has been fondling them for a couple hours.
Maybe he'll squirt 'em red and put them on. These big calipers hold about 10% less fluid than his SRT8 calipers so the pedal effort won't change by much.

I like the factory Brembo color on the calipers I run now actually.

I went and picked up some VHT caliper paint in red, and a couple cans of engine paint as well. Ford red and Mopar red.

Here is a little quicky spray out I did. VHT on the left, Ford in the middle and Dodge on the right and the spare caliper to compare.

Thats the paint I like to use .Dupli-color makes some rattle can brake paint also.As long as you prep the surface right and de-grease the parts the rattle can stuff looks great and holds up well on a 3 season only car.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/08/12 02:40 AM

Yep, the VHT went on really nicely.

I used to light coats and one medium coat as per the can and it flowed out good and has a nice smooth look. (and took time to prep them well of course too)

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/09/12 05:31 PM

Just scuff it up good with a 3m scratch pad like the body shops use.Powder coat is just basicly dried paint baked on in oven.I always keep one in my box ,they work great for cleaning/polishing metal ,mainly seal flanges .You can bake rattle can paint too at low temps in oven and the finish will look fantastic and be more scratch resistant also. But with brake calipers ,just burning in the pads should bake the paint on,However I could still almost touch my new Baer PBRs after a downhill decent .I could barely heat them up even after a 80 mph panic stop!

I haven't driven it yet...one of the caliper had a little bit of cosmetic damage so just waiting on the company I got them from to send me out another. The one side is done at least though, bled them up today as a matter of fact.

And yes, I have power brakes...and the car is not related to any US car, it was an all Australian design. (they were hugely winning road racing cars as well..)

I checked with our painter today. He was prepping a set of Porsche calipers for paint.
He acid washes the parts then goes over them again with thinner.
Once that's done, he shoots them with regular automotive paint and two coats of clear.
After that dries he'll apply the Porsche, Mercedes, AMG, Maserati, or whatever brand decal.

They come out looking very nice. Large aluminum calipers really don't have a problem with burning the paint. They simply don't get that hot.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/11/12 02:02 AM

What does a set of those AMG Calipers and rotors go for? What are you using for hubs?

Thanks
Posted By: feets

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/11/12 10:33 PM

The calipers are $992 each. Working at the dealership means my cost is much lower. Using my contacts from the body shop I found them used as low as $450 each.

Rotors are $420 each retail. Buy them online from an aftermarket source if you want to save money. Better yet, get two piece rotor and save a BUNCH of weight. These rotors are 37 lbs each. Installed on anything under 4,000 lbs they will probably lead to slower lap times. They're simply too heavy for a typical car.

For hubs, I took the stock hub/rotor combo and cut the rotor off. Once that was done I turned the outside diameter small enough to fit inside the rotors.
After that, I mounted the rotors on the lathe and turned the center register until it was large enough to fit over the Chrysler hub. The bolt pattern had to be altered a wee bit as well.

It is far from being a bolt on but when I bought them in 2006 there were no complete large brake kits on the market. My employee discount made all four corners cheaper than the front only kits on the market at the time.

I walked in the shop the other day and Fred was prepping a set of Porsche calipers.
He simply runs masking tape across the pistons and trims it with a razor blade.
The calipers will need to be clean for the masking tape (and paint) to stick. That's no easy task on old used calipers.

Yep, after cleaning mine really well, and a light scuff I just masked up all 8 pistons and shot them. Came out nice for not having Fred (flintstone?) do them.

What are you guys using for hubs on the old cars? Are you using custom hubs or cut down factory rotors?
Posted By: OzHemi

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/13/12 09:11 PM

I think Feets used cut down rotors ?

On the Torana I used custom billet steel hubs from Oz.

I had a spare set of discs off an Aussie Valiant laying around and they use a 2 piece rotor on them, and after a little mocking up looks like a very simple conversion to big brakes when I get around to building another one of them. (They actually use the same caliper bolt spacing as Holden...probably since PBR calipers were used on many different cars there.)

Speaking of paint...

Here is before:

After some cleaning:

And after scuffing it back and wiping down with paint prep stuff and shooting with VHT caliper paint...

Now if only Challenger Gary would check his PM I sent him asking about getting some stickers made..

They are Brembo calipers.

There are 4 brake pads per caliper. Two pistons push on each pad. The leading pistons are 28 mm and the trailing pistons are 32 mm. The total caliper volume is not as large as you might think. That allows you to run a moderate size master cylinder.

In this pic they're shown beside the "big" Mopar 11.75" brakes.

Open up the pic Oz posted above and you can see how they drop into the caliper from above and are retained by pins and an anti-rattle spring.

It's a big pic so here's a linky.

Even though Feet's picture sort of shows it, here is a mid 70's A body caliper along side the Brembo.. and a 4 piston Brembo ala SRT8's as well.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/14/12 05:44 AM

It's really stinkin heavy too but I guess Mercedes doesn't care.
The late model S, CL, and SL AMG cars use twin slider calipers on a single mount. None of it is aluminum. I haven't weighed the stuff but it has to be much heavier than the aluminum 8 piston calipers.
The smaller AMG cars have all gone to 6 piston calipers, including the SLS.

The Bentley Continental GT uses a 405 mm front rotor. Yes, a 16" rotor. The brake caliper is a slider in a large mount. It dwarfs the 8 piston calipers Oz and I are playing with.
Bentley wanted the largest production brakes and they got it.
Going that far is taking the one-upmanship a wee bit too far. There's no need for anything that heavy on a sports car, even if it is a 5000+ lb Bentley.

I couldn't remember which car had those big half round calipers but they're on a smaller rotor.
Bentley wanted the biggest brakes, not the biggest caliper.

Ah, ok. yea, there's more to "big brakes" than just a big caliper. I have no idea what size that rotor is, or how much clamping force the caliper generates.

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/14/12 11:20 PM

It would be a real PITA to bleed those half moon calipers if they use a single fluid channel on each side. The calipers would have to come off and be held at a funky angle.
Posted By: 70Cuda383

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/15/12 12:34 AM

yea, it would! I think I see 2 bleeder valves though, is that a second bleeder valve hidden behind a wheel spoke towards the top of the caliper?

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/16/12 11:35 PM

Took mine out for the first run around the block since swapping calipers

They pull the car up for sure, but you have to stand on the pedal pretty hard to lock them up..think I might have a little bit of air trapped somewhere perhaps so going to bleed them all one more time and should be good to go.

Can tell though for sure they are going to do the job slowing the little car down just fine.

I might do that in the Dakota, although I didn't do a "stock brakes" 0-100-0 test, so I'd have nothing to compare it to.

what's the viper do it in? 16 seconds? so with 200 hp less, and an extra 1000 lbs of momentum, I bet I could do it in under 20 seconds. I was hitting 97mph in 14.6 seconds with the 318, so I should be able to do 100mph in a low 14 range, leaves me a solid 5-6 seconds to get it all stopped

Re: My new big brakes! - 05/18/12 04:51 PM

Speaking of stock brakes... Here is a spare subframe I have laying in the back. You can see the factory sized brakes along side the AMG caliper (let alone the rotor size difference )
I think it should shave a little time off a braking test.

It'd probably take my Jeep a full minute to do that. 5000lbs of Jeep, each wheel weighs 120lbs, I have about 130rwhp [on a good day] with the aerodynamics of a barn.

If you stabbed another minivan through the back glass you could use it to improve your aerodynamics.

They are Gen III front calipers, SRT 14.25" rotors that I had to machine down to 13.96" to clear my wheels since I miss calculated the taper of the inner shell. It is a Dr. Diff kit. I've been having some issues with a slightly soft pedal that I cant figure out yet. But they do work awesome even being manual brakes.

It's like a cheese wheel.

The front calipers have 28 and 32 mm pistons. That's 1.1" and 1.25" each. There are 4 brake pads per caliper. Leading outside, trailing outside, leading inside, trailing outside. Each pad has a small leading piston and large trailing piston.
Think of them as two small calipers joined together.

The rears are 28/30 mm pistons. 1.1" and 1.18" each. They are conventional 4 piston calipers.

+1, got the same setup from Doctor Diff, Awsome quality but I had to go with 7/8 master and yellow stuff pads to make them decent. Next step will be dual booster and I will remove my proportionning valve as well. You might want to do it before you bleed your system.
