Quiet Muffler? - 01/13/04 07:46 PM

I'm looking for quiet mufflers for my Challenger. Currently I have TTI headers with 2 1/2" pipes, Dynomax Turbos and and over the axle turndown pipes. As it is I need something a little more daily driver friendly. Any suggestions?

I use to have an H-pipe that I had to take off when I converted the car to a four speed. I'll probably get the Summit X-pipe set-up with the new muflers, which should help quiet things down a little.

The rest of the set-up is a 360, XE268, & Airgap.

Just add the Summit X pipe kit first if everything else is in good shape. I have it with two of their turbo mufflers and its very quite, I'm sure 99% is because of the X pipe.

I've heard the Accurate Ltd. hemi repro mufflers are pretty quiet.

or look at the large body dynomax mufflers if they'll fit--I have a single 3" in/out on my car and it's not bad. a little drony around town, very quiet on the highway. a set of muffs (i.e. dynomax bullets) right near the header collectors and then a secondary turbo muff in the OEM location might quiet things quite a bit

I've seen the larger body Dynomax in their catalog but still need to get under the car and see if they'll fit. They're about another 4-5" longer.

The car was quieter with the H-pipe and I've heard X-pipes are even better.

and 1" taller & 1" wider. it's a big A$$ muffler. fit in my M body's stock location, though

Check out the 17748 or 17749 Dynomax, they're pretty quiet Hemi style, 2.5" in and out. I was actually a little disappointed to hear them at first on my 64Dog, then I got used to them and am happy with their quiet sound of power. They should fit under an E body, they did stock!

I have the hemi mufflers (with h-pipe) from Accurate LDT. Nice for cruising, low grumble sound at idle, sounds pretty healthy at WOT. They aren't lound at all, just a nice sound.

I have the $15 summit turbos on my car. They are quiet and the price is right.

I'd go with the dynomax Hemi turbos, had a 2 1/2" pair with my 440, now have the 3" versions behind the 508.

The 2 1/2"s are essentially 20" versions of the 14" Dynomax Turbos. I actually prefer the Stealthiness of an Authoritive but not overly-loud system. I associate real loud "look at me" exhausts with the not particularly fast (Fart pipe Hondas, open pipe Harleys, etc), I guess it's "If you can't go fast, be annoying!" mentality

To me, cars that are faster than they sound are wayyyy cooler, I'm not talking at all about a 'Whoosh-mobile' sound, just a nice rumbly sound without all the extra decibels.

They perform pretty well too as tested here:

yup, the 3" version is what I have in a 2 1/2-3" single exhaust app....

wise- do you have any resonance issues? I have a slightly annoying resonance with this setup and headers in my car at 1500-2000 rpm (street rpm's)

No resonance at all but it sounds completely different with the 3 1/2-3 X pipe than it did with the 2 1/2" H arrangement. Slightly higher pitch and at idle it really lets the signature roller 'Chirp' right through the pipes. I like it a lot.

I'm with Streetwize on the "faster than it sounds" way of thinking. I also use the Dynomax Hemi superturbo mufflers with a 3"in/2 1/2" out x pipe and 2 1/2" tailpipes on my 65 wagon with 440. The car still has a rumble to it, but more quiet than most street rods. A straight through design muffler will make a tiny bit more power, but they will blow your cover!

I found a 1 mph gain going from superturbo muffs to Ultraflos (straight hrough design) on my Demon. I also use an x pipe: 3 1/2"to 3". The car is still stealthy with the Ultraflos, but was REALLY stealthy with the Superturbo's. Now I don't want to give the tenth back!

accurate ltd hemi style. quiet but not . great for around town and cars that are drivin alot. my convertible was way to loud inside till i switched. can't wait to hear it with a new motor. soon ---

That's what I like as well. I tried to get mine really really quiet, but it's still a bit loud. Magnaflows are nice though, as well as the Dyno bullets I have. Hell I've got 4 muffs on this thing!

.....well maybe like 1 1/2 muffs on each side.

since I only have 1 muffler, that might be part of it...I was thinking of getting some 2 1/2" bullet mufflers and putting them in right off the headers before the Y, and then going to the hemi muffler...

Back with data on the Dynomax 17749, I cannot stress enough that this is the muffler you want. Data from the oft-quoted Pontiac tests of a few years ago.
Lowest sound level (well, almost, the stocker was quieter) with quite low backpressure.
About $45 each the price won't kill you.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to go with the Dynomax 17749 and the Summit X-pipe. I too want to be faster than I sound and I think I've got it backwards with the current set-up.
