Re: 2011 - SS/AH Super Stock - 12/10/10 06:47 PM

I think it would be more exciting if there were more cars running at the top. It's basically a war between WC and Barton with the PS engines. I'm probably in the minority, but it seems the faster they go the less interested I am in the class. Sort of like F1, so far out of my budget I don't have much interest in the class. Too much money chasing that $5k payout.

I have the utmost respect for every guy in this class. I am glad there are more engine builders than it used to be and I hear there are more on the way. This class is kinda like what Pro Stock started out to be. I cant wait for next season !

By PS do you mean Pro Stock? Those engines are far from Pro Stock engines. Unless you mean Pro Stock 1975.

Re: 2011 - SS/AH Super Stock - 12/15/10 06:26 AM

I guess I should have said restricted PS. No PS engine in 1975 was making 1000HP or had .900" lift cams. Maybe 1985? They would be PS engines if they removed the head, intake, displacement and carb rules. They are running the Honda rod journal sizes now. I would guess the current PS engines use the same rod journals.

to make it more competitive have a 64 car field qualify. points + $$$$$ for top 3 quailfiers to keep from sandbagging. match the closest ET' with each other. even the budget racer could compete.

One of my customers asked me to post some pics of whats going on around here since I have been kinda quiet lately. I guess you can call it a "virtual shop tour" I just finished up fully machining 8 hemi blocks, and am working on Lloyd Woffards motor right now. Just got done honing Dan Zrust's new block, and am preparing the shop for the new HAAS ST-30 lathe I ordered, and Landis CNC cam grinder. I hope to be fully "in house" by the end of the year.
I have plenty to keep me busy, so I guess the class isnt dead yet.

Maybe R-M can sew up your chute. They should proably learn how to CC a piston, and what the rules on carbs are first though.

Watch it now, fall from the top is short.

R&M. Lets see, 7 National Championships, 58 National event wins in prostock. Isn't that the class we are in? Their receptionist can CC a piston. Carbs was my fault as I was told to change them. RV broke, ran late etc,I forgot,no excuse. Bales made $20.

As for the calendar of "Losers", well heck, we are all real nice and will try harded this year. SLH
Posted By: warfish

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 01/08/11 09:48 PM

I know how to fall from the top, I did last year for 3 months. Its not about that. You can tell everyone how great R-M is till you are as blue as your car. The facts are you have probably spent 50K over there so far, and you are .02 faster than Comella at the dutch, than you get pitched for illegal carbs. You didnt seem real happy about it when you called me that day saying that R-M wasnt taking care of you very well. You can sew whatever you want to on your chute ("sorry charlie" for the ones that didnt get the calendar), and you can send all the pictures you want of your new trans, and assume thats going to put you on top. Its offensive to those that have actually been successful, to have someone who knows nothing about racing say they "cant wait to outrun charlie" with a transmission swap. As far as R-M doing anything for you, I am sure if they foscused on it solid for 3 years, they could be on top. You just have to outspend the Sheik, and they will spend the time you need.
Was it their receptionist that sent the email asking how to cc a hemi piston?

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 01/08/11 10:16 PM

i think reher-morrison's question for checking dome volume was to eliminate any differences there might be between their typical procedure and nhras' procedure,,,

is there any hope or what is the status of having a form of a hemi shootout at the martin ihra national race? is there anything racers can do to help this along? do we need to come up with sponsor money?

Thats a cool slogan. When we started on my dads car, I wanted to paint it flat black and call it the UGLY STICK, than put on the back "you just got beat with an ugly stick". My dad was not in love with that idea, so he decided on the tan camo.
We just pulled the motor out of his car, and mine is on the hoist now. It has been in the trailer since I got back from Valdosta. I am working on Lloyds while dad gets my motor ready to pull.

I will contact Jason. I asked him about it earlier last year, than when I was over there testing one day, he aproached me to see if I could bring my hemi guys over there for their nitro jam race. I can probably get at least 5K in cash with one phone call. I havent persued it too much, cause I have been too busy. I think its a done deal if it doesnt conflict with any other dates.

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 01/26/11 03:35 AM

in the process of building Larry's car he was fitted to seat, pedals ect. the stearing wheel wasn't comfortable to him so as a service I have made several of these colums that have the steering wheel lowered to make the car more driver friendly for driver comfort. I have installed them in comp and super stock cars for overv 30 years with no problems what so ever and has been looked at by many tech officials.I might add that there isn't many completely factory colums in any of these cars, the modifyed colums are a lot safer as a general thing than the other ones.
There is a stock appearing cover that is instaled when car isn't down for clutch service. As far as to the look of colum to floor I looked at photo with the lighting in photo how can you tell where it goes to floor? I can say that it does go through the hole in firewall that colum/shifter went through. I hope this helps your concern if not contact me and I will be glad to talk to you.

Sometimes folks on this computer remind me of fans when I was a bullrider. The fans could always tell me what I did wrong to get bucked off but not one of them had ever been on a bull ! If folks wanna gripe about Larry's car, build one yourself and go beat him ! With that car and Grumpy power.....hes a player ! Watch out !

No malice intended CW, but OMG I saw the Perkins 'Cuda at Maple Grove and it is an incredible piece of work. Kudos to Gary Jennings and Larry Perkins.

Hey King Cuda (Bucky) I did call one time around the first week of December but it was late in the day (I am a West Coast guy remember)
Being that your car was not out too much (was not at the Indy Shootout)I did not think you wanted to be in it.

I apologise for that. I will make sure I will call you for the 2012 one.

Email me your address and I will send you a couple n/c.

Ya gotta love CW's attitude. Wonder if his sh..t sticks. bet it does.

Just funnin with ya Charlie. Would still love to have you in the calendar, but not it won't be free unless you got a sponsor to pay for your spot. With a number of returning customers, and people buying them every year, I guess you don't have to just have the Shootout winners in it to be popular.
Check your ego at the door.

The mopar calendar is free and they have a budget for print promotion that is 1000 times my entire years income. I guess they can put you in for free. Tell me do you get all your mopar parts for free as well, or do you spend a bunch of cash with them. I guess you do pay to be in their calendar in the end don't you.
Just having fun.

Bucky email your address and I will send you a couple. Any other SS/AH owners/drivers that don;'t have a SpeedZone calendar email me at

speedzone@telus.net for a calendar.

I have 2 calanders left. They are free with the purchase of a T-shirt.
The "dogfather" got the first one.
By the way, did anyone realize that the racing season started? there is a points meet in Fla right now, but I guess that we would rather talk about carly simon songs.
I kinda like ANTHRAX better, "Because in mega city, I am the law"

Lloyd Woffards motor is going on the dyno today, hope to run Wayne Brooks in the next couple days. Than I have to get Hensons ready for Vegas, and ours if we decide to go.

Maybe next year Dean could have a name that tune calander.

I plan on going. Does not look like a money race so my guess is about 5 cars. Wendell is running well so maybe he will come up. Brooks? Jeff?

I have a $10k sponsor for Bowling Green Hot Rod Reunion but not much interest from the racers. Plus it is one week before the Mopar Action race at Maple Grove. Two in two weeks is rough. So I will probably tell them to keep their money. I heard it was HOT there last year but photos show a nice turnout.

Heres an idea for a multimillion dollar businessman, why dont you take the 10K sponsor and put it towards belle-rose? Its in your backyard, and less NHRA BS to deal with than the bowling green race. The bellerose race was in my opinion the most fun race to go to.
The bowling green race was hot, but it was run very well, and the track was good. If someone puts up 10K anywhere, the fast cars will be there.

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 02/14/11 03:48 PM

i agree,, the sports nats at belle rose would be a good race to sponsor, but i think the deal is that bowling green is in the sponsors backyard, so they have an inclination to sponsor it,, maybe it will be the stepping stone to more races being picked up by that sponsor,, then next year belle rose and others may be sponsored by them

Mr. Wescott, maybe you can talk to Steve Kent and Rodger Brogdon. They put up another $25,000 to spread out the payout in Comp Eliminator. They will probably have double the cars there with extra money involved. If I had the money, I would put up the money myself. If only I had a billion!

Also, thanks for the responses in regards to who's coming to the race. Can't wait as this event will be the start of my spring break.

I ask Ron Farmer where this car came from and he is the one who told me this was the old Dairy Queen car. I had never even heard of a Dairy Queen car befeore he made mention of it. After looking at the car and seeing it was painted by Steve McCrery, I am inclined to believe it was a "Tank" car also BUT why did Farmer tell me this!!! This is how the car looked at that time a couple of weeks ago. I did not look at the vin.

I just spoke with Tank. This is not the Dairy Queen car. Tank built this car from a 318. Why Ron Farmer would tell me that is a mystery to me. Next time I will look at the vin. But....nowhere in the add does it ever mention this being an orginal BO29 car. In fact he states it has a clear title. If I see him this weekend at the MO-POWER show I will again inquire.

Snuck out to a "little track in the woods" by the house. Needed some Phishstick seat time. As soon as we unloaded this "Hemi Militia War-Truck" began spying on us. We began interogations and could only get name and rank, NO serial number. After extensive waterboarding with C25 we ascertained he was not a Militia member, just a good ole' boy. Deer hunts out of it in the winter, races it in the summer. He did know all about the Warfish, current record holder!!!

4 hemi cars here from what I've seen. Wofford should win, I think he is the only car that's set up to run hard. Check dragracecentral for results.they running class eliminations now.

The Bowtie babies are posting on Classracer.com that there is a low car count among the AH cars and they don`t understand why there is still a Shootout. Their jealousy over the attention the AH cars get is amusing.

Re: Belle Rose TNT - 03/19/11 02:36 PM

i dont think there is really a shootout in belle rose,, i think its a misprint from nhra,, mopar is only doing the shootout at indy this year,, so mopar isnt putting up any money for it

the guy who owns/runs belle rose puts on a good show,, is a racer himself,, and their program is racer friendly,, he probably is just running the hemi cars today for their class run off because he knows fans like to see them compete,, but with only 5 cars there,, wont be much of a show

wofford unloaded on his 63 run and it shifted into 2nd way too early, could be a 55-57 in it, i dont know what henson has done

lloyd's car was spinning with the front end in the air,, like 10 ft out it started blowing the tires off,, bales had that issue last year till he switched to a larger tire,,,, thats why his 60 ft was off,, that wasnt on the back tires

Chuck, that was a typo. It was $50,000 and was tied to the track ownership transition that happened the next day . A D4 thing.

In case any of you have been wondering why the "Frito Bandito" hasn't been posting; he was involved in a fatal crash at his job. He's okay but a father & son were killed. This has obviously made a huge impact on him. He should be back on board soon.

Re: MATS SS/AH Shootout & MATS general racing update - 04/08/11 06:23 PM

Just wanted to give an update on the MATS SS/AH Shootout.

7 cars

2 WCH cars (Jenkins and T. Mandella)
Vierra
D. Raybourn
Percy
Houser (stick)
Sledjunk (stick)

Supposed to get 3 hits today (weather permitting), with elims starting tomorrow

It's 58 degrees, about 2800', a little windy (it was crazy windy yesterday), another beautiful day in Vegas.

I will try to update as we go on through the day
Posted By: Ben Holt

Re: MATS SS/AH Shootout & MATS general racing update - 04/08/11 11:50 PM

Well I won't be updating tomorrow:(

After round 1

Hebert 8.57
Raybourn 8.73
Houser 8.88

I'm not sure of the rest.....we lost a driveshaft in Spyphish and tore up some stuff so we are done. Houser hurt his engine in rd 2, so now there are only 5 cars left.

But beautiful weather and a nice track made for a good race for us so far.

The .57 with Hebert's was at 152 also, lost the shaft around 7 seconds....

Look out!!

Re: MATS SS/AH Shootout & MATS general racing update - 04/11/11 04:33 PM

it was quite the weekend at Vegas, as Thursday Sally & I parked over 250 cars in 70 mph wind gust. Friday was darn cold with Stephen Hebert with his Reher & Morrison powered Hemi Cuda being #1 spot in the SS/AH shooutout @ 8.577-152.93 but on the run a drive shaft left the car and played havic with the undercarriage of the car. Stephen, John & Benn Holt elected to load the car and call it a weekend cause of the damage done. Great Finals as Mark beat Dave on a holeshot 8.77 to Daves 8.72. Thanks guys for waiting a extra day to get better weather for finals as I know some wouldn't of been so understanding as the 7 i had there, great bunch of racers i had this year, thank you all.
1. S. Hebert 8.577-152.93
2. D. Raybourn 8.730-150.72
3. M. Vieira 8.809-150.75
4.R, Houser 8.824-155.01
5. T. Mandella 8.832-148.46
6. J. Percy 8.927-149.05
7. J. Jenkins 8.981-148.25

It was really great talking Jim Hale into coming to the event and watching him go on to win the SS/Stock Combo. Ken did a great job on his runner up finish also.
Also SS/Stock racer John Calvert won the special heads up A/FX eliminator we had there with his 64 Thunderbolt.

Thank you to everybody that came and ran the race and I'm going back to Ohio on Tuesday, my buddies, Rich South and Ralph Cardamone wants me to go to four wide with them as soon as i get off the plane but i'm passing on it so i can get the stats sent to the printers this week.

Nitro, thanks for your hard work, WCH host for dinner, the Magnificent 7 for coming, my Holt/Westlake crew and of course the Painter folks. Congrats to Mark for the win and Dave for the finals. Sorry about Rick's new motor breaking. Been there!

What a trip we had Texas wind/dust storms, Toter 10 mph from Phoenix to Kingman, trailer blowout, winch blow up, Phish Phrag driveshaft, blizzard leaving, more Texas dust/wind storms. Now in Athens Al in toronados in route to Holt's to repair the SledPhish. BUT near 130mph in the 1/8th makes it all good. Brad & Darin Morgan over at Reher/Morrison have it going on. See ya' at the Grove in June.

Was great to get to talk to Dave as usual he is a great guy and very enthusiatic about the sport which is the way we all should be.

You guys always put on a heck of a show and at this pace I better get with the program before you outrun my bucket o bolts

I guess Martin is a no go, no time for the phone call? There is a purse being put together for Columbus JEGS Sports Nats. That gives us three more this year, I need a "shoe" as I have a schedule conflict for Columbus.

I talked to Jason in person, he seemed like he was interested, but it was going to be up to IHRA since it was their race, and I guess they werent interested. So yes I did have time, but I didnt see the point in posting the lack of an event that didnt exist.

Its just funny, but wear a Bucky shirt at the races and Everyone asks "where is Bucky" "Is Bucky here"! I have never heard a bad story about Bucky. Certainly a Hemi fan favorite.

And then when I wear my black Jesel/ Warfish shirt.... And, well at least the dirt doesn't show!! just kidding

They're on the qualified sheet, so they ran at least one pass Saturday. Track was supposedly junk on Friday test session, stockers blowing the tires off.

Gary, if you where there, how bad was the air and how was the track? Not bad numbers considering the conditions

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 07/31/11 02:30 PM

Perk and Baughman only ones at atco, 11 cars entered at indy so far for 15K purse, pretty sorry if you asked me. I remember 28 to 30 cars for the first 5 or 6 years I went to indy, than when hemis turned into prostock cars with grade point requirements, the casual participant decided to retire. I can say as I blame them.

That is correct. I heard rumors of them building a SS/AH HEMI, but no one that I talked to knew who it was for. I hope they can find the power to make Bucky compete with Charlie, Barton's, and Perkins. I still think the stick cars have the advantage, but what do I know. I just enjoy reading about the AH cars.

Larry Perkins made some nice runs down at Atco! looks like they're ready for Indy!

Baughmans car looked real strong upstairs!! Watched him at the top end when I was on the scales. Nice runs for a new engine. Cant really miss the car with the new paint!! I think he ran a 8.60 with some good mph. Wanted to go see the car but was too busy working on my car. Doug Walker from www.hemishootout.net was supposed to be taking pics of their car for his website. Have to watch for it over there. Nice to see someone promoting the AH cars with such dedication!

Last year 39 SS/AH cars made grade point passes. 24 were entered at Indy. Yep, I also thought $15,000 would bring out more cars. Maybe Tony D can get Campbell, Buntin and Leiter to come.

Hey, thanks for coming and trying to keep this class alive. We have a good purse and still less than 20?? Not good.

Look over at A/SA stock. Big Daddy and 15 others will have a shootout and Detroit can sell those type cars on Monday. As the Edmond Fitzgerald cook said "Fellas' been nice to know ya'".

There is a car avaliable. I just got off the phone with Randy Wafford, the SuperCuda is still for sale turn key. Still time to buy it and enter Indy.

I've lost interest in the class. Only 2-3 cars have a real shot at winning it and it's crazy expensive to keep up with the engine builders that are always quicker than the customer cars. I think the Teutons are smarter and running a bracket engine and winning the eliminator and stop chasing the "Jr. Pro Stock" award. With the down economy, I think people ran out of money to put in the blackhole of SS/AH.

It's a no brain er where the manufacturer is going to put it's money. I believe the class is loosing cars and fan base. I know I don't get near as excited about the SS/AH cars as I used to. Looks like "the hand writing may be on the wall".

The class will be just fine. Just going through a "lean" year is all. Still a big fan base, and sure it will be tough to compete against a few, but there never will be anything as cool as a HEMI Super Stocker. Yeah the Drag Paks are growing, but no way they will ever have the coolness of the Cudas and Darts.

I agree as well. I'm 24 and I love the SS/AH class! The only thing that disappoints me is NHRA not doing enough to police the put all the cars back into one class. I would like to see the Hemi's run against the chevy's and ford's. Anyway, SS/AH is one of my favorite classes to watch and this year I get a chance to go to Indy for the first time to watch the "creme de le creme" of class eliminations. I also can't wait to see Wes Leopold's car as well. I was hoping David Bogner, the Vignogna's, and Scott Gove would show up as well.

You can. SS/A,B,and C can run against the brand X cars. Don't look past those cars while roaming the pits at INDY. Plain and simple no one made a more badass Super Stocker then Mopar. Sure the new Cobra Jets are fast, but the huffer is a differnt animal, and too difficult to compare the two.

You are correct but its not the same as when you had no other choice but to only run SS/A,B,C etc. With the choice of having your own class, you can avoid NHRA's lack of policing to keep parity.

Currently on the entry list, there are only Fords in SS/AA and SS/CA, a chevy vs. ford battle in SS/BA, no SS/A or SS/C cars, and a good battle of 5 cars in SS/B. We all know the boosted combos of the ford have some very loose reigns but the thought of having SS/AA like it was years ago is appealing(But only if properly policed). I know NHRA will probably never do enough for it to come back but it would be nice to see in my opinion.

Either way though, I'm still a fan

I'd love to agree with you but, they just re-factor your
package if you beat the Chevrolets too often. I'm really
surprised they let the HEMI be "Top Dog".

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 08/10/11 11:48 PM

The 68 HEMI's have always been top dog, even when they were "B" cars in '68. Even if NHRA refactored the GM's and Fords with carbs, to compete with the HEMI's, what would come close?

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 08/10/11 11:50 PM

Plan was to be at Indy this year, but got detoured. Had Roush build motor and it broke BAD on the 3rd pass at Cayuga. Trashed everything except intake, carbs, and valve covers. Other SS/AH racers have been supportive offering spare, but the budget I have only allows one motor purchase a year.

Should've listened to CWJ and Ray.

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 08/11/11 06:14 AM

Jason Shumate joined the SS/AA battle with his 65 Belvedere.

Scott Gove has also added himself to the Indy entry list. This is going to be awesome. The current fastest car in Super Stock and the baddest SS/AS car in the nation are going to be at the same track. My first Indy is going to be amazing!

(145 cars listed for SS so far)

I dunno, I know the new Fords would run with the hemis if they opened them up. The mph says volumes about their potential. But, the chevy guys swear up and down that they have something that will run with the Hemi, a guy flamed me on classracer one time when I said the Hemi's were faster so I assume there's some special engine combo in the vette thats supposed to be faster. I don't know what it is though. That whole situation is probably more headache then most would ever want to take on, but it would be cool to watch.

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 08/11/11 12:23 PM

CW and Dr. D would probably disagree but in my humble opinion the $18,000 Mopar pay out is lopsided. $15,000 to win with $3000 spread out is great for a couple of cars BUT this class is an ego driven class. Such as "I have the fastest, meanest, monster out there". The guys that have these cars don't care about the eliminator, just look at last year how many qualified but didn't stick around for SS eliminations. I think $8,000 to win with the other $10,000 spread among the ranks is more realistic. Even a small check is appreciated as a token of appreciation for these guys bringing such a high dollar piece out and racing heads up. Again, just my opinion as I don't own one of the cars but I am a huge fan of this class and hope it continues to thrive.

Here you go Frito, last years poem!

With Bales in bling and Charlie in camo,
29 line up with their Hemis as ammo.

Super Cuda's still around & lookin dandy,
But Mels in the lanes looking for Randy.

Spyfish is lurking, wants power in excess,
He just returned from a trip to Texas.

The blue car from Cali, still is MEAN.
Raybourns' Dart will create a very big scene.

Dr. Dan & Wolkwitz, both in Darts,
Smoke & oil abound, look out for flyin parts.

Raines is coming, with help from Westcott,
Heli-Hemis new motor will mean a lot.

Cake has a choice of Cuda or Dart,
Holt says run the newest & play it smart.

Shine by Tookie, noise from Clark,
Kingfish runs fine with a holeshot start.

Campbell & DePillo working together just fine,
Mopar paint on the Mule makes it shine.

Wolkwitz & Barton, coming to play,
Power put out by Big Daddy Ray,

Lil Joe running safe, wants no valves bent,
Uncle Jeff watching over and bringing Steve Kent.

Mark & Wendell coming from across the border,
Want to put away the field in very short order.

Houser & Booker sliding in from the West,
Viera right behind, want to run with the best.

With his motor zinging and tach in the red,
Jeffs motor is his, Modern Clyinder Head.

Two colors of paint change in the breeze,
Check out the hues of Lewis & Keyes.

Colors on this car are far from vanilla,
Island Hemi brought up by the Chuck Comella.

The Cudas coming down from the Gold Coast,
This is the race Danny Zrust wants the most.

Perkins new car should stay off the bump,
After all his power is from the Grump.

Stan Perry with a new Gary Jennings car,
Will show up to raise the bar.

It may be HARD to keep the pace,
But Woos' old car is in the race.

The purple cars gone, shot like an arrow,
No entry for the MARVELous one, known as Darrel.

LLoyd Wofford has a car that's real bad @#%
If he gets out first, could be hard to pass.

"One has said Sledphish is offensive and dumb,
so Reher has made socks to make him go mum".

Look for the "Dart Dude" in a different car,
may be the biggest mystery on here by far.

As much as Bucky wanted to make make the show,
a run on the dyno resulted in a no go.

We were lookin for Jason to put the King Cuda in flight,
The wildest thing out of West Virginia, since Jesco White!

Racers will miss the chicken fryin on Friday night,
The crowds at those feeds were quite a site.

The Pa. Yellow Dart will make it this year.
New paint and power may require a new gear.
With Steve & Jr. pushing big John,
He'll line up in front and say "bring em on".

Cake will have em all chasing their tail,
look in his trailer for boxes of quail.

A new 4 speed for the crew of Hard,
makes them become the new Hemi wild card.

With family and friends working for Perk,
the new shifter will fly with one swift jerk.

Daniels will be trying to make them stand on their head,
to make up for Maple Grove where he went red.

Wolkwitz sits back and doesen't say much,
but his car has power by the bunch.

Jeff has the MCH Dart ready to go,
Just needs to get brother Bob to lead the show.

Orginal Dart brought North by Mr.Comella,
a lot of color mixed in with a little yellow,
son Steve and Chuck C. will make the trip,
new motor and hood should make the Dart rip.

Westcotts are workin to raise the bar up,
look out if Sr's got the styrofoam cup.

The most runs this year by a SS/AH car,
Dan Zrust, the Gold Coast Cuda the leader by far.

Missouri Mule wants to put on some hurt,
Russ called Tony D at Speciality Motorwerk.

Wayne Brooks hemi car is the only one from the West,
Sure will miss Raybourn, Booker, Viera and all the rest.

Charlie's loaded up with just one wish,
to pair up first round with the Spyphish.

I just got a PM, Lil Joe's in PA,
Getting some help from the boys at Rays.

Daniel Rogers is hot, drivin for the Tueton stable,
But it's up to Modern Cylinder Heads to put his power on the table.

Another Louisiana Hebert has got to be fun,
Can't wait to see what Timmy will run.

Re: Hemi challenge semis results - 09/03/11 12:42 AM

In the 60's the fast Super Stockers were the hardest working, most innovative and creative guys. Jenkins, Nicholson, and Sox. In the 70's and 80's in Pro Stock it was Glidden, Shepherd and WJ. Charlie is like these guys. Dedicated to one goal. His Jennings car is sorted out from bumper to bumper and he still ain't satisfied with it. Watch him in the pits between rounds and you won't see a sandwich or a beer. You'll see his game face until the tracks closed for the day. Anyone that doesn't work on their combination 80-100 hours a week and thinks he can hang with Charlie should put their stuff on Racing Junk now and get out while you still have some cash left. WJ should put Charlie in his car.

Re: Hemi challenge semis results - 09/03/11 02:29 AM

If everyone in drag racing or any other sport did the same every time one guy ran faster than everyone else for a few years, where would we be today? There wouldnt be anyone running any heads up classes. Not saying what they (Wescotts) are doing is not impressive but when someone steps forward like this is any field, the rest of the competition eventually catches up and the whole group is quicker as a result. This knuckle headed mindset of these guys throwing in the towel defies logic.

I guess all the other guys running this class are lazy, ignorant, miscreants.
Posted By: BOSSHEMI

Re: Hemi challenge semis results - 09/03/11 05:17 AM

In a class full of millionaires there are no lazy, ignorant miscreants. They are all overachievers in their chosen fields. It is no longer a plug and play class where you buy an engine from RBRE and Ray tells you what gear and convertor to run and you adjust the valves once a weekend. It is Pro Stock Jr. where you tear the car apart every round. Clutch management is where CW excels. David has it figured out now but he can only work on so many cars at each race.
Posted By: BryanRad

Re: Hemi challenge semis results - 09/03/11 02:13 PM

Agreed on this one. Probably read a little too much in the first one, just couldnt wrap my mind around everyone throwing in the towel because someone is a little faster.

Re: ah going to Columbus - 09/17/11 04:39 AM

I have a hemi question:

How does the weight and length of the rocker arms in the hemi engines affect rpm potential? Does it have any significant downfalls that causes major stress on the valvetrain?
Posted By: Spyphish

Re: ah going to Columbus - 09/18/11 04:13 AM

I was thinking some of the engine guys on here would have answered your good question by now. Cat got their fingers or writers block! So from the Village Idiot of Hemi:

The long rocker arm is on the exhaust side its not near the issue it would be if it was on the intake side. The exhaust rocker is aided in closing by the out going exhaust gasses. In a way, it has some help so the mass of the rocker on the exhaust side is not really an issue at all on the Hemi engines. It posses no problem what so ever to increasing the RPM range of the engine. Some Bob Glidden Pro Stock Ford Hemi engines turned well over 9500rpm with a similar length and far heavier weight rocker arm. We also have springs now days that handle much more than what we throw at them. The number one problem to increasing engine speed with a Super Stock Hemi is area. More precisely, valve area and port area. These engines are limited to a stock valve size and you can only fit so much air past a certain size valve.

That should bring them out!!!!!!

The reason I ask is because I'm a college student in the process of designing a cylinder head so I was trying to spec out the rocker position of the intake and exhaust. The design issue I'm facing is whether to leave the pushrod straight which means having a longer rocker arm or put the pushrod at 5 or 10 degrees and having a shorter pushrod which will create some side loading at the lifter. I know the pushrod is going to sideload some, but I'm curious of how much force is required to make side loading a major issue. For example, at 5 degrees with 2000lbs of force down the pushrod will create a side loading force of 174lbs or with 10 degrees, 348lbs of side load force. I cant do much with to fix the Intake pushrod angles due to how big I'm trying to make the Intake ports and the crappy positioning lifter bores in big block chryslers. Anyway, with this design, I want and need the valvetrain to be able to spin up to 11,000rpm without causing such significant wear that the design is useless. I appreciate the help and I will also consult some other individuals as well.

Re: ah going to Columbus - 09/18/11 11:34 AM

Its all a big compromise. The lighter the rocker, the less valve spring needed to keep the valvetrain stable at high rpm. In the same respect, the straighter the pushrod, the less lift required to open the valve an equal amount (tangents). The rocker weight could be overcome with more spring pressure, but there is no real cure for bad geometry.

I would say for 11k rpm, keep the pushrods as straight as you can and thats unfortunately the rocker length you end up with. If you can alter the fulcrum point, keep a mild ratio. It sounds like you need a DOHC Hemi!

And where is Charlie?

Shhh!, thats the next step if this design works. I'm trying to design true canted valve big block mopar cylinder head that will make power somewhere between the Predator and Pro Stock cylinder heads but also capable of being put on a stock block.

It will be a real trick to come up with a better head than already available for the BB mopar. To get anymore valve or combustion chamber size means spacing the cylinders out, then at that point the motors can be made in the mega cubic inches like the chebbies

Wendell Howes (Mark would bring the Dart if he could get an enclosed trailer ride back to CA)
CW
CWJ
Tuetons left cars in PA SO couple more there

Probables:

Baughman
Campbell
Perkins
Welker
Barton???
Jeff

Have no clue:
Bucky
Craft
Henson
Kent
Any West Coast folks

Sound like NFL roster press release.

Perkins is still working on motor I heard.
We should leave weds, ran my car yesterday at 131, found a broken brake line from fire damage, took off the oil press line to make one half pass to see if hood was going to blow off. Track was loose for me.
We have dads car up on the hoist power washing it. It was due.
looks like the weather is getting better for this week.
What was the air like there this weekend, and what was the temp? I am trying to figure out what the air will be this week with 65 deg temp so I know what gear to run.

MOHNTON, Pa. - The HEMI Challenge at The Dutch promises to again be one of the quickest races for HEMI-powered Super Stock cars, including Darts and Barracudas.
With a guaranteed cash purse of $10,000, and thousands more from the contingency program, it is one of the richest HEMI races in the country. It will be run Saturday, Oct. 15 as part of the 40th annual NHRA Pennsylvania Dutch Classic at Maple Grove Raceway.

Last year's winner was Jim Daniels, a dentist from Yardley, Pa., who successfully defended his championship by defeating Gary Wolkwitz in his Ray Barton-powered Dart. His winning pass was 8.342 seconds at 159.42 mph.

Daniels will be back this weekend as will plenty of challengers in Wolkwitz, Charlie Westcott Sr., Charlie Westcott Jr., Tyler Hard, Wendell Howes, Bill Brooks and Mike Booker.

The Challenge will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with eliminations through the afternoon. There will be Super Stock time shots on Thursday and Friday.

Racing in all classes begins Thursday and will run through Sunday. Gates open at 8 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Re: Dutch - 10/16/11 12:45 AM

My take is the stocker final??? Not on the qualified sheet for the shootout. Didn't get to read all day, then mix results. Sorry, I guess this should be posted outside the SS/AH post but when I saw a friend crashed I got stupid. Still hope someone posts tonight to know. Should have been there today but.................. can't be everywhere at once

Re: Dutch - 10/16/11 04:57 AM

It was dang sure some good racing today. My wife and I were with Lil Joe. He broke a tranny on the qualifying run and got it changed but dripped a few drops of fluid in first round so they backed him out. He came back later in the super stock time trial and ran 8.44 ! I got to spend some time with Larry Perkins also and have to say he is one classy guy. Spent some time with Bucky and his wife also and cant wait till hes back out. It was a great time and I'm hoping Jeff can get the win tomorrow. He doggone sure deserves it.

I talked to Ray and he said David was fine. Thats the most important thing. The car can be fixed.

X2 on all of that!

Shame that I was there and have to go over to www.hemishootout.net to see the highlights!

Nice to see a good car count, wish the weather would've been a little more favorable, but no real damage despite a pretty tricky track. Doug Walker has a great photo sequence of Wendell Howes getting a little loose. I had a pretty good view first hand of that one and excellent driving job and great photos!
http://hemishootout.net/index.php?option=com_morfeoshow&task=view&gallery=27

Doug also had the sequence of Davids mishap. Turned my stomach looking at them. And no he didn't post them. Doug is a class act! Could've been alot worse. Didn't see the car and didn't want to. Very tricky track. ALOT of cars all over the track. Comp, t/s and t/d ran 1/8 mile...

Re: Dutch - 10/17/11 10:58 AM

472, like it or not, that is racing. Maybe you never root for the underdog.

And Jeff has contributed greatly to the class through the years. His cylinder heads and manifolds were on the fastest AH cars a few years back. He made it from A to B and took the win light, PERIOD! I guess nice guys don't always finish last…

I'm sure he can use that runner up money better than most in the class. Jeff is trying to run a business AND race an AH car. Not an easy feat. But he's living the dream…

New "Da' Man" - 10/30/11 01:45 PM

In order to be "Da' Man" you must beat "Da' Man". 64 to a 69 plus some change at the tree, congrats to Larry Perkins!!!! You "Da Man" all winter.

Very nice job Jeff and Gary W. New folks in the winners circle. I thought only Swamp People drank champagne from plastic cups.

I lost $100 to Comella because I was not quicker (was faster)so we doubled up on Saints/Tampa plus 10 points, I lost again. So we doubled AGAIN (he may not be aware of this) on Saints/Colts and I gave him 54 points. Back all square, thanks to Bales who came in for the whipping, I mean game!

Next race Belle Rose.

I had heard that they were going to all weigh 3200 also. Fine with me, I am glad they didnt make it 3170, cause most guys have a hard time making that anymore.

I have people asking me through pm's etc about shirts all the time, we recently got the website set up so you can buy the shirts with one click, so I am just trying to let it be known to our customer base.

Re:2011 -SS/AH Super Stock - 12/09/11 03:28 PM

Heres an idea for a multimillion dollar businessman, why dont you take the 10K sponsor and put it towards belle-rose? Its in your backyard, and less NHRA BS to deal with than the bowling green race. The bellerose race was in my opinion the most fun race to go to.
The bowling green race was hot, but it was run very well, and the track was good. If someone puts up 10K anywhere, the fast cars will be there.
cw

Hey Wescott, great idea. Bowling Green ship has sailed so we have started on Belle Rose this Spring. $5k so far.

PS You know how to get a million with a Hemi car? Start with three!!!

Wow, I had not heard that. My first year at Indy, I was parked with them. Three generations, Mel, Randy and Randy's daughter. They took me right in and showed me the "ropes". Super classy! Our prayers are with them.

Google "Warford racing family" and you can read a nice 2001 article, lots of history.
