1966 D/Dart....D/Stock Does anyone actually have one? - 01/19/08 04:33 AM

I did some searching sometime ago, and found some info, but no one actually having a car.

Any in museums???

Any owners on da board?

FWIW, a D/Dart is the car in a barn I dream of......

Actually, I think there are a few on the board. Change your title to something about the D-Dart and you'll probably get some responses.

No but I did own a 66 Dart with a 273 four barrell and a 4 speed a few years back. Ron

I just sold a 66 dart was originally a 273 GT 4 speed car. Now had a nice running /6 in it and still the 4 speed. rust free. $2500 bucks. Ran great and was very straight for the $.

Last year I was given a 66 dart vert. no engine and trans and someone had put a tilt front end on it. I bought a 70 barracuda and was given the dart and cleaned the guys yard for the deal and then gave away the vert to another guy.

so they are out there and usually pretty cheap.

I find the car really interesting....

I dont think I could ever afford one, at least one from someone knew what it really was.

There is something cool about a small displacement, high winding four speed A body. the fact that Ma Mopar made one specificaly for the strip makes that car the most desirable one to me.

Ive had a 65 Dart and a 63 Dart, both GTs.

Heres a pretty nice looking one on Denver Craigslist. Its a 66 GT with a 273-auto, with A/C. If I had any money i'd jump on it.

The D-Dart ISNT just a GT dart. I think it was only 1 year. Nice little screamer. My old bosses Bro had one a few years back.Heres a little write up I found on them.:

Correct, big difference here.

66 was the year, d/stock was the class it was aimed at.

These cars should have a VIN that begins LO23 or LP23. The order should include the following sales codes: 699 - Special Order (Super Stock Dart); 409 - Special Order Axle; 364 - Super Stock; 624 - heavy-duty suspension; 32 - engine code; 554 - delete rear seat belts; 393 - four speed transmission; 21 - 6.95 X 14 BSW rayon 2-ply tires; 408 -Sure Grip; P4H - trim code (red); WW1 - paint code (white).

Re: Does anyone actually have..... - 01/19/08 11:04 PM

I know of two, one is a nice survivor car in the hands for a very private owner, but he does drive and enjoy the car; unfortuantly not a show car kind of guy. Also know of one for sale that is VERY RUSTY but the guy wants a restored price for it, hoping he comes to his senses one day and sells it for a reasonable price. They are rare and neat little cars.

I also have a friend that recently sold his 8k original mile survivor 65 Dart GT 273 HP Auto car with the original Factory Cragers on it(Had the Dart Charger or Super Stock package). Car has been in many books and magazines and perfect in every way, heated garage since new and the man is a fanatic about his cars, he was the original owner.

Took the words out of my mouth. A 4bbl 273 does not a D-Dart make. I'd like to learn more about them myself. Sounds like they were quite the screamer for what they were!

interesting, I didn't realize they were all white/red combos. I'm not happy the D-Dart 273 had the same 275 HP rating as the early 340's. It's a shame they stopped at a one year offering and didn't carry on/progress.

My brother had one and me and him converted it from a /6 to a 318 Magnum/LA hybrid w/ disc brakes. Since sold it. It's a very odd ball car trying to get any parts for it, and the super narrow engine bay is not fun to work with for headers, etc.

I still don't figure out what most of ya'alls posts about /6 darts and 273 you sold for $2500 had anything to do with a D Dart. oh well, just filler, like this post,

In 1983, my mailman and his cousin, who was also my teacher's newspaper carrier, pulled the /6 out of a 68 Dart 4 door that was a great car when his mother bought it new, but it just sat outside after she bought her Maverick in 75, anyways, they sold me the motor for $50, which was a steal, the thing ran like a Swiss watch, speaking of watches, you know who makes a great watch..................

I had to go look. This combination is listed in the NHRA sheets as currently being legal for Super Stock. It's a natural SS/I class car. With a 10.85 index, it would have to go real low 10's to be competitive.

I nearly had the chance to buy one in the late 80s. A friend of mine decided (with my convincing) that he needed it. Last time I saw he still had it. It's been in relative hiding on the SF peninsula after being rescued from an SF taxi driver, who by the looks of the right quarter, used to park by feel........... If I remember correctly it came from a dealer in Santa Rosa.

I think the headers would keep it from being F.A.S.T. Legal.

Quote:

Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that had headers delivered in the trunk.

There's been a number of people that showed documentation for a '64 Dodge with the Hemi and headers from the factory (not in the trunk) but the FAST people have disallowed it.

The headers are the only part that would exempt them.
Couldn't you run a 400+" small block in a <3000 lb. '66 Dart?
The intake and exhaust would be the bottle-necks.

I was told by a Mopar maniac that races his car in F.A.S.T. that the D/Dart would not qualify because of the headers.

Those 6.95 - 14 bias ply tires on 4.5 rims that came on the car, wouldn't help.

Someone posted on here that Max Wedge cars would get to "upgrade" to a certain tire. Wonder if that would apply to the D/Darts as well?

Upgrade meaning a tire from a slightly later year, like 1970, not current.

Got to admit, that light car and a big inch small block would be a killer package.

Re: 66 D Dart....... Does anyone actually have one? - 01/24/08 03:43 AM

if I'm not mistaken, F.A.S.T. allows:

cars with 14" tires to run a MAX of G70-14s,
cars with 15" tires to run a MAX of G60-15s,

& I don't think they are picky on some cars running 15s
that were not a factory available option?

& it's all in fun until you become a top competitor!

What/who has been the fastest F.A.S.T. legal small-block E.T. & MPH?

Re: 66 D Dart....... Does anyone actually have one? - 01/25/08 12:53 AM

What about the headers? I think they were shipped with the car in the trunk. Would it be allowed to race in F.A.S.T.?

I was told that the car could not be raced in PSMCDR because of the headers.

All the D/Darts were white GT's with a red interior. Since your buddy's car was yellow, it probably was a Dart GT with the 273-235HP engine.

Yes, the Doug's headers that are still sold today for the early Abodies have some slip joints, although not as many as what is pictured.

Thanks. Just wanted to store that in the memory bank for when it comes time to fix my early A-body.

Sounds like a GT with the Hi-Po, commonly mistaken for the D/Dart.

I have a set of headers that one tube on each side go through the fenderwell and then bolts up on the bottom of the collector area .Who makes these or what brand are they. The set I had was brand new and looked to be pretty OLD.
We used them on a 69 Dart for a few weeks and engine break in and when I gave the car to my Soninlaw he wanted to go with an original set of 340 manifolds I had. So we swapped them out and repaired the holes in the fenderwell of the 69 Swinger.
I thought about using them on my 67 Dart Gasser but I want a FULL FENDERWELL HEADER for it.If anyone is needing a set like them I may be selling them before too long.

The original set of D/Dart headers that Doug's made only took me about a half hour to install, both sides, one person. Everthing just slips together.

The reason the original owner removed the headers that I have from the D/Dart was because they leaked. I wonder why? I think they were on the car for about a year.

I dug this out of my archives from when I worked at Quaker City Dragway. This is the car my friend now owns. He has yet to return my calls. It sits on a dirt floor in an old barn.

I had a RARE 66 273 Hipo Sedan Dart from California a few years ago. The person who has it now restored it in Michigan. It had a factory auxillary cannister to store vacuum for the power brake booster. It was white with a red interior. It was bone stock with all the original 273 Hipo Dress up. It was an Automatic. It had the orignal deep steel wheels. I sold it for $1500 seven years ago. I bought it for $150. And it ran good.

Great thread. In 1966 I used to work across the street from Harold's Texaco, in Wichita Kansas. They had a brand new Dart, they turned into a race car. It was a 273, yellow with black interior. For over 40 years now, I always thought it was a D-Dart. It just seemed so odd for me at the time that they would race a brand new Dart.

There has always been a rumor of one D/Dart leaving the factory painted Red with Red Interior but dont know if it was ever confirmed. I doubt that it exists since they were clearly meant to be white on red according to every document known on them.

It would be right in the middle of Kellogg now. That was before they widened the road in the early 70s. I worked at the Vickers station across the street at Kellogg and Erie. There was a Fina next door, they are all gone. They would be 2 blocks west of Sunnyside school, if you know where that is. I noticed the Ceros candy store has also moved.

Yeah, I know where Cero's used to be. I think I know where sunnyside school is.

I live near Andover but I'm at Kellogg and Rock as I type this...

Are we sure there wasn't any other D-darts built? They didn't build 64 Hemi hardtops either.Built 35.No hemi 4 doors, built 3-5.There was a car I saw a few years back that looked to be a D-dart here locally. It had the headers, 4 spd and the codes on the tag.Car was a lt blue w/blue int 2 dr sedan.Unrestored.Not saying it was real but it sure looked to be.I would like to view it again and take a longer look at it.

Well the Ceros was half way between Sunnyside school and the Vickers station. Syl's Fina was next to the Ceros. Harolds was directly across the street. The last remaining parking lot light, finally came down just a few years ago.
I was just astounded at 16 years old, someone would and could, do that to a brand new car. Of course, they wouldn't let me hang around, but I did sneak a few peaks at it. Loved how it sounded when they were tuning on it.

The only markings on a D/Dart's fender tag that might help identifying one is the S/O number. They run from 417-71120 thru 417-71169. That I know, they are all listed as LP23's on the fender tag.

ddartdude, I have really enjoyed your pictures and information in this thread, thanks!

Going home from work last night, I remembered the name they painted on the side of the Harold's Texaco Dart. El Bandito! At 16, I was even more shocked that they did that.

Glad that you enjoy the info. Not much out there on the cars. I'm still searching for more info on the cars.

ddartdude again thanks...

Awesome info and the cars are really cool.

Hmm....

If there was a shoot out with a D dart, L79 Nova, and a 289 Comet in a magazine, I'd buy it....Hell, is it was close enough, I;d pay to see it.

Only problem is I havent seen a legit L79 Nova at the track in like forever.....

Course, I havent SEEN a D Dart in person....

Good info here on the D Darts....

Even if there is alot of stuff here about Darts that arent LO cars.

This is the decoded D/Dart fender tag of the car that I sold recently. I whited out the last 2 numbers of the VIN. The last 3 of the VIN's ran between 888 and 937.

I believe there's a guy that lives close to Johnstown, PA that has a yellow one. Maybe that's the car that you saw back in 66. I think that one was repainted yellow. I'll have to give the guy a call and get some info on the car.

Were these made at Hamtramck too??? I have areal low vin last four are 1629 Barracuda S Car. I have been trying to find out if it is indeed one of the very first S's made that year. It seems like the manufacturer liked to make the showier models first to create more hipe???
