So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/13/05 04:27 PM

Here are some pics from the Cleveland get together..What are the odds of these cars all showing up, to the same party ?? There was a very cool 70 Mach 1 there to mix it up nicely. These are all close Mopart's buddies.. Dan has the yellow 72 440-4 speed GTX/RR with added 6 pack , his fiance' Debbie has the mint 72 Red auto RR, IMBILL's 71 6 Pack-4 speed number's orange RR, and mine. Slow ET Racer, BlownZoom440, 10SECGTX, and 8587GN were also there to partake in frosty cold ones and fire-hot wing's. We took some pics at the Lizard, then headed downtown to the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame for some photo op's. We had to bribe the Cop's to get onto the pier for these awesome pics of the Brown's Stadium and Science Museum also in the background.. Enjoy...we did..

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics - 11/14/05 02:09 AM

What an awesome group of photos. I spent my whole childhood growing up around my families original owner 71' B5 340 Roadrunner and when I turned 16 they let me race that beauty and click off 13 second passes, it ran 12.80's when Dad raced it with a solid cam and steeper gears, this was with a very mild iron headed 340 in a 3800 pound car, that was quick back then. Right now it's completely torn apart getting a restoration and a big block. When it's done I'll tell him who he can cruise with, you guys! I put all the 71-72 Runner pics on my computer on a disc last week and my wife printed them for him. Looks like we need to do another disc now. I love these cars and hope to give my Dad's car the ProSport treatment someday!!

I love all Mopars But that 71-72 Plymouth B-body has got to be the best looking Mopar Ever!!! I know I am going to ruffle some feathers again but it is so obvious. For motor trend magazine to have pointed it out so long ago with their article about the best looking automotive designs of all time, there has to be some validity to this!

Well, right now I have 2 71 RR's, 71 GTX, 71 Sebring Plus and a 71 Satellite. Just found 2 more 72 RR's in Kentucky that I need to go get. One is a N-96 car. Also looking at 2 71 Sat's in AZ. Have had about 20 or more in recent years. Have had 8 of them at one time. Some pretty cool ones. Have also had several 71-72 Chargers.
Funny, I never cared for the 71-72 till about 10 years ago. Always been a 69 guy. Keep your minds out of the gutter.
In my business, 71-72's are my main gig. Spent the last few years doing reseach and interchange.
Theres nothing like a fast sweet running 71!!!

Hi,

I've been a fan of this body style since my father bought a 1972 Satellite Sebring brand new back in 72, I was five years old at the time. Attached is a picture of my father, myself and the Satellite.

Now I own a 72 Road Runner survivor with 38000 miles. It still has original paint, interior and drivetrain. It originally came with 14" rallye wheels, which I have, but the 15" magnums highlight the car's chrome trim a lot better in my opinion. A picture of the Runner will follow...

Here is a pic of my '71 Satellite Sebring Plus. Has the original 383/console/buckets. Actually the wife laid claim to it when I got it home. I figure whatever she wants she gets, that way I can get her involved in the hobby and allow me to spend more

She wants Plum Crazy. What do you think for interior/vinyl top color? Black or white? I don't remember ever seeing any purple/white '71s but I'm sure they made them.

they had petty blue in 64, hence the "T" in the paint code. "T" is the year series for 1964, but like in 69, if it was special order you had a 998 or 999 paint code

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/16/05 05:46 PM

OK...now that we have all of the "coke bottle" B body groups attention....Here is a question

As alot of you know...Mine is a Legit V code, with alot of documention and was wearing original paint when i bought it in 1979

The question is: What criteria determines the fender "engine call out" decal, Mine had the straight "440" on it and i`ve seen many original V code cars with the same, BUT...i`ve seen just as many with the 440+6.
I used the 440+6 simply because i like the look..and wasn`t as concerned at the time with absolute correctness.

I`ve done alot of research on 71`s but i`ve never been abale to get a straight answer to this.

Any thoughts

Rick

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/16/05 08:11 PM

Mine is also a V code and the fender call outs say 440. I thought someone had just taken off the 6 for some reason since it was also missing the GTX trunk emblem. Although I can see the faint outline of the trunk emblem, I can't see the 6 on the fender. I wonder if it had anything to do with what plant they were built at? Mine was built in St. Louis.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/16/05 08:13 PM

My 71 V-code GTX is still in the original paint and has the 440 call outs, not the 440+6. I was curious also and was told that they all came this way. The 440+6 call outs were aftermarket?

Now for those wanting to get their feet wet with a 71 Road Runner project I have two available.
A factory purple car currently on the bag under parts cars and an F3 4-spd car that I don't have home, or all the details yet. oojhnoo@aol.com

The factory definitely had part numbers for both "440" and "440+6" decals. Not sure about why some cars did and some didn't...I would guess either they ran out on the assembly line or just human error?

Ok, I don't want to ruffle any feathers here, but this is my opinion why I like the 71s better.

1. All the best engines in one year.
2. All the hottest high impact colors.
3. The spoilers. (Technically, the 72 didn't come with the rear wing... right?)
4. The 71 side marker lights are awesome... so intracit(spelling?)... so involved. The 72s are the generic jobs.
5. The bird head in the grille is simply the coolest thing I have ever seen on a musclecar...period!

I will give one consession to the 72 model... the fact that the RR has its own grille... different from Satellites. Thats pretty cool, but I still dig the bird head in the 71 grille better.

My earliest memories of this body style date back to when I was about 5 years old in 1974. My parent's neighbor's daughter drove a brown 72 Satelliet Sebring Plus. I used to pretend my BIGWHEEL was a 72 Satellite... and other misc. Mopars

71 Tail Lights for me over the 72`s any day

No disrespect meant to 72 owners....as with anything it`s just a personal preference
I`m just happy that 71`s-2`s are finally starting to gain in popularity...all of us need to remember not too awful long ago when they weren`t.

I still think the 72 looks better because of the grill and tail lights..The side markers are better looking on the 71s for sure..Better packages in 71 but the 72s were built better according to experts..Whats your opinion on these stripes compaired to the roof strobe??? AND is an air grabber car better looking or just more rare and funtional?..I like both hoods..

Seems like everyone is putting an air grabber on their car. While the A/G setups are great, it's good to see the standard RR/GTX hood too. I like both.
I personally like the 71s better but I'd love to find a petty blue 72RR with strobe stripes!

Thank goodness that these cars weren't as popular as now when I first purchased this 71 RR. Since then, I have purchased many rare 71 RR parts like rubber bumpers, air grabber and rear window louver. At the present, it will cost a small fortune to purchase the parts or the car. I am currently working on purchasing another 71 RR so I can use the parts that I have collected over the years. One item still missing for my list is a 72 RR grille. I like the 72 Grille better, but as you know they are not cheap.

72 grille the badest coolest grille ever in a MuscleCar! 72 taillight awesome too ////got to be the biggest set of taillights ever on a car (except Olds Alero perhaps ...like those too).
72 you could still get N96 and EV2 Tor-Red ....that why I love my car.
I do think the 71 Strobe stripe and marker lights are better thought.
Though no hemi for 1972 you could get a 440+6!!!
Too bad noone ever ordered more than 1 or 2 !!!!
Here's my 1972 RR ...love the combination of canopy vinyl tops and strobe stripes!

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics - 11/18/05 12:22 AM

I think the 72 RR grill is the most awesome Mopar grill next to the 71 Cuda. The 72 tail lights are geezer looking, to big. Hate the 72 side markers. Don't care for the 72 Rallye center caps. Better motor options in 71, Hemi and 6-pack. Don't get me wrong, I love 72 RR's and have owned a few of them.

Rick, great topic you started. The post that will never end.

I like the strobe stripes that go over the top, but not the ones that go over the front fenders. The solid stripes that go from front to back I don't like because they are too far apart. Maybe I'll get use to them. I've never seem them in person.

You could only get the fender stripes on a GTX in 71. I really like the 72 tank track fender stripes, but to my knowlege they were not available in combination with the roof strobe. I can't stand seeing a car with both...looks too cluttered.

Years ago, there was an interview with the designer of the 71 RR/GTX/Sebring in one of the Mopar mags. He said looking back on it, the only thing he didn't like about the 71s was the tail lights didn't fit the design. He said that they got it right with 72 tail lights and rear bumper because they were supposed to remind you of the shape of the grill up front.

I'll let him know. Nothing wrong with a little profit. Altho he'll probably just bring his truck and trailer over and drag his '74 Charger back home.

He's thinking of buying a '68 Charger 440 and fixing it to sell, or maybe keep.

It may have a NOM in the car, the current owner said he bought it not to long ago and is FLIPPING it to support a habit, a bad habit, a GM car.... The 71 grill is plain jane.. not to offend but stand twenty feet away and it dissapears..Plus it was offered on everything..Slap a little plastic head on it and its a RR grill..zzzzzzzzzzzzzz....and the bumper guards on the rear of a 71 are just hidious....I would like to put rear window louvers and chin spoilers on my 72..Louvers seem to be non existant except for the repops at 2 grand a set..

rear only - 96
front & rear - 396

GTX
front only - 14

'71 RR Taillights YES
'71 RR Side markers YES
'72 RR grille PRICELESS---NO comparison

"Cleaner" ??? I know they have almost No value 'cause they came on every '71 RR,GTX,Satelite Satellite Sebring and Sebring plus and every '72 except for GTX & RR. Just change the color and emblem.
I have 10 or so '72 RR grilles and a couple '72 cars and only 1 '71 so I am alittle biased I guess...

No breakdown for mutliple combinations of options available.
You can have # of 4-sppeds or # of Tawny Gold or # of white buckets but not for a car with those combination .... it breakdown doesn't work that way.
It was a report to show percentage of cars with an optioal accessory so they could plan on what sells well and what didn't (profit).

Yeah I know the average complete '72 grille needing some work $1,000. But luckily I have been into the 71-4 B-bodies for the last 10-12 years and picked up every '72 grille & piece I could find while I have $$$ invested in them...It's about 20-25% of what it would cost today... Judging by the launch in your 10.50 run, your caltracs and 9-way ranchos work pretty dang good!

What are your 60ft times?

Years ago, there was an interview with the designer of the 71 RR/GTX/Sebring in one of the Mopar mags. He said looking back on it, the only thing he didn't like about the 71s was the tail lights didn't fit the design. He said that they got it right with 72 tail lights and rear bumper because they were supposed to remind you of the shape of the grill up front.

BTW, anyone ever seen a full tube chassis 71-72 RR?
I would consider replacing the Challenger if I found one already done.
A friend of mine has a old 72' RR funny car body that has been cut up into 5 pieces. I have seen a few 71-72 funny cars out there but just haven't, seen the rr chassis cars, at least out here on the west coast.

Please post picks if you have them!

The designer also said that Chrysler received a lot of complaints about the 71 tail lights being hard to see, since they were set low in the bumper and actually angled towards the ground. It was the main reason for moving them up and making them more prominent on the 72s.

Nope, but interesting fact ....you could get the V21 V25 stripes on any 2 door Satellite in 1972!
V21 V25 are the hood and deck stripes found on N96 cars for 1972.

Sorry I don't have complete 1971 Production numbers.

This number should be out there.
Tawny Gold was 8th most popular color for 1972 RR's.
I would guess around 200 or so 1971 GTX's in that color.

On the lists I've seen, 3.8% or 5335 is for EL5 Bahama Yellow.
GY9 Tawny Gold is listed as 5.5% or 7721.
These figures are for ALL Satellites.
I've never seen a breakdown by particular model, and I find it hard to believe less than three GTX's were GY9. I already can think of one - the famous MCG first issue cover car with louvers.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics - 11/20/05 01:58 PM

I can believe there were 27 of them and not 2.7 of them.
Lets play with this number a little deeper.
If there were a total of 2538 units built, 2211 of them autos and 327 of them were 4 speeds then we can safely say there were 6.7% of all 71 GTX were 4 speeds. And if we take this thoery one step further, can we say that there were 6.7% of the 27 GY9 cars that could have been 4 speed cars which would be 2 cars? If this is somewhat correct, I wonder how many had a White Vinyl roof or a White Interior like mine does? This could get weird!!!!!!

Incase anyone is wondering what I am doing with the 71/72 registry, I have written a form to use for the registration process. At this time both Eric and I are proof reading it for errors and missing information needed to keep the data accurate. Since both Eric and I are both 71 Plymouth owners, I will also be contacting 3 more people, a 72 Plymouth, a 71 Charger and also a 72 Charger owner to proof read it for missing information. This registry is going to be a very large task to undertake and to ensure everyone that he or she will have his or her security issues taken with great importance, I need to accomplish this task right the first time, so bear with me until I have it completed. Also I have realized that the 71/72 B Body registries can and most likely get to be so large that they cannot be monitored correctly, so I have decided to narrow the body styles down to the following select models. I have decided that the following VIN number categories will be collected and stored in the database. It is unfortunate that we cannot gather all the 71/72 B Body information so I hope you understand.

PLYMOUTH
1971 GTX
1971 RR
1971 SATELLITE SEBRING PLUS (SSP)
1972 RR
1972 RR/GTX
1972 SATELLITE SEBRING PLUS (SSP)

DODGE
1971 CHARGER R/T
1971 CHARGER SUPER BEE
1972 CHARGER RALLY

At this time the above list is what will be collected and I may add to this list after I hear back from the proofreaders.

It is a repainted car that came out of the North Carolina area. I bought it last spring it had the original interior, the engine has never been out and except to repaint it red it was pretty original. The car has had I think about two owners when I got it. One of the guys had put a white vinyl top on it, an Imperial style grain. The car is coded for a black. I replaced the top, the dash pad the door panels and had Mr G's do the dash for me. The car is really a nice driving car. It is extremely quick for a low compression engine. I will do some more detail work on it this winter but it is a great car. It has A/C, 3.55, Am/Fm, automatic and of course the white bench seat. I will try to get some more photos in the next few days. I am just learning the whole digital photo thing.

Which one to consider......72 SSP, original hemi orange with white interior, body work done and new paint, needing an interior, originally 318 now early 80s 360, 72 RR grill included.....or......72 RR 340 car needing restored but has # 340, the body is supposedly solid but does have some dents. The prices are similar.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics - 11/24/05 11:46 PM

I'd take the SSP. But, then again, I can't do bodywork. Depends on what you can/rather do, I guess. The Runner would be worth more when restored, if that's a factor at all.

Here is sogtx's 71gtx doing a wondefull burnout when I owned it in the mid 90's. At the time the car was well known in the Buffalo NY area for its John Force style burnouts at the annual Car Craft Street Machine Nationals.

I got a ticket [unsafe start] for giving the car craft crowd what they came for-an awesome John force Burnout and the 1st words out of the cop's mouth were "nice burnout"

Jimmy, Is definetly the Charger Guru. I talked to him about mine once. Had some good questions to ask about it. And wanted pictures of the date coding under the trunk mat. If my car had paint or a sticker for the black behind the grill. I have e-mail or Ph# around here somewhere. He would be a great wealth of knowledge to us Charger owners. Hopefully he will be game to be involved even if from the outside. matt s

This thread couldn't have come at a worse time. Guy is coming to pick up my '68 Charger next week which has put me on the prowl. When I bought my 71 Barracuda in '98 I was actually looking for a 71-74 plymouth. I settled on the Cuda. When I found my '68 Charger last December I was actually looking once again for that elusive 71-74. I am bound and determined to get that Plymouth this go around.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/30/05 04:05 PM

All about perspective.

I owned a '70 Charger R/T SE before I got this car. I was motivated by price into the 3rd gen B-body camp; prices for '68-70 cars are too rich for my 3-kid/child support/one income wallet. And I wanted a below-the-radar screen Satellite rather than a RR or GTX in order to make it into what I want, rather than the car dictating what I should do (like with my numbers car). But now that I have one, the style is really growing on me.

Anyway, good luck.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics.... - 11/30/05 04:59 PM

Okay, 71-72 B-Body afficionados, your opinions on the plan for my sled.

The car needs a repaint, which will be done (sometime) in the original '72 Mopar Blue. At that time, I'm removing the molding around the car's middle, removing the Satellite Sebring and Plymouth badging. I picked up a '71-72 RR bulge hood that's in nice shape that will be painted and put on at the same time. Gone are the whitewall tires and deluxe hubcaps, to be replaced by cop wheels and 'Plymouth Division' stamped dog dish hub caps. 235/60/15s BFG Radial TAs up front, 255/60/15s on the back. Can't decide on strobe stripes on the hood into the fenders.

The interior will not be touched. 39k original mile interior, no cracks, wear, cut-ups, no nothing. That's how I'm gonna enjoy it.

Drivetrain: all over the map. What I did secure was an 8 3/4 drum-to-drum rearend out of a '73 RR that will be rebuilt for 3.23 SG (it could be a SG now it just hasn't been torn into yet). Add to the rear '73 HD springs. Price and availability will dictate the motor/727. Mild cam and troque converter for street cruising and driveability.

I think it looks pretty cool the way it is, I would put on some diferent wheels and do the repaint. How many realy sweet satalites do you see around compared to runners X's & clones. I have nothing at all aginst clones in fact I have one but yours to me looks too sweet to mess with

You are too kind

Did I forget to mention that it has been garaged from '72 to '01, and has no rust? I lucked out on the find, but now I'm gonna make it into what I want.

You have found an awesum car to start with, one thing I need to say is your choice of rear tire is toooooo small.
275 at a minimum, anything smaller will look to small for the amount of room you have.

Great pic's. Love that drag car...I'm wondering what to do with my new SSP ...Definately a 4 gear. It's got the original 383/727 !!! I'm keeping it an SSP !! for sure. Just got all new NOS SSP emblems and appliques !!! White interior buckets with console 4 gear is in the works. Completely rust free from Reno Nevada !!!I want to put my old GTX 440 in there with a fresh 23 spline.. Fiberglass fender's, 9 1/4 SG with 3.54's. Originally a GK6 car with white interior, thinking a color change ???

I like the 275s and 295s on the rear, but I have 255s on mine, and I think it has a more factory correct look and still fills the wheelwells well...on the other hand, my butterscotch car has 14in wheels with 245s on the rear and those things look WAY TOO SMALL!!!

Just a quick note to everyone about the 71/72 Registry....

I have been working as many hours as I can getting the database set up and it looks like this registry will be a go.
The biggest concern is security and that will be the my goal. I am still waiting for Jimmy Boros to contact me again, he has once with some updates and he said he will agian, Holidays are here and I am sure he is no different than any one else, SHOPPING and PARTY'S....

Data base is completed for the 71/72 RR/GTX/SSP so far.
I am working on the link to my webpage to down load the Registry Form which is also finished.
Once the file is uplinked so anyone can download it, I will get the Dodge Charger Database completed.
You would not belive how much work this has been..

Did that car come from the Lubbock Texas area?? I think I recall a similar car in Abernathy in the mid-late 90's.

Re: So ya say ya like 71/72 Plymouth B Bodies eh?? Pics - 12/16/05 03:15 AM

Heres the same car in the late 70's.
Kinda interesting story. I was able to come in contact with the 3rd owner. He told me this car was bought new in his home town in Mich. Is uncle bought it from the original owner in 74 then he got it in 1980 and had it till around 92. It ended up here in Colorado about a mile from my house in 95. He still has some of the original parts such as the G15-60 spare tire. He's the one that found the broadcast sheet. Had alot of history on the car.
