Got my roof for my 70 Challenger ..... Started taking the spot welds off and taking off the leaded quarter panel seams .......

Had to cut , take out some spot welds and move stuff around real careful so I can reweld it. Here's the new part .... Tough to get off of the old roof. The metal is alot thicker

looking busy there..where was your car from to get rust like that? I've had some rusty cars before but never see them rot in the roof like that(bracing)

I bought the car in Albuquerque NM ..... Trunk was also a goner ..... must have been sitting for a while .... thanks ... still have a way to go..

Same here. Mine came out of Santa Fe. 10 years oudoors at a cattle ranch. Police antenna holes did in the left half of the trunk floor.

Looking good. You've got alot of patience. Wanna do my trunk?

don't want to sound dumb , but could'nt you just replace the whole roof. Looks like you had it all there, just replace by the pillars.

Great question

I guess you can put the roof on complete. Several reasons I didn't do it that way

First off, I don't trust any used part.These cars rust from the inside out. I didn't know
if the donor roof had any issuse. It did ..but this way I can use the best of both.

Second, I'm doing this alone. The roof would have to be cut dead accurate in each of the
pillars. Not a whole lot of room for error. The mock up and measuring with a complete roof is
not somthing I can do by myself.

Last and probably the main reason, The roof is strutural. The metal is really thick,
especially at the front pillars. It would be very difficult to properly weld the supports.
I don't expect the car to be in a rollover ..... but......
Even if that never happens the possibily of cracking from vibration after all this work
is too great.

You can buy the complete roofskin new from AMD (Auto Metal Direct) for $599.00. They have roofskins for 70-74 Challengers,70-74 Cudas,68-70 Chargers,and 68-70 B body Dodge/Plymouths.

I have 2 other drip rail areas that have rust .... Easier fix for these ... the rusted part on the support is smaller yet longer but easier to weld and the other is just the drip rail ...

This one just needs the drip rail fixed. The support is a little dimpled but I'm pretty sure I can spot weld those areas since the metal didn't "pinhole"

Lots of work fixing that kinda stuff. Looks like your making good progress! My challenger had lots of little rust issues, I spent weeks fixing them all and still gotta do the floor pans. I always take more pride in a more difficult project like you got going on there.

I always support the body with jackstands whenever cutting anything structural. Even in this case ... I don't think making those few cuts had any impact ..... but ... Better safe than sorry. ... Plus I tied the frame together earlier ....

Back brace welded .... checked the measurements and this part just fell in ....

Next up the roof skin .... first I've got to check it for surface rust on the back , pound out any little dings it might have and finally straighten the edging for a clean weld . I'll post more as I go along.....

Btw ... I would like to thank everyone for all the comments and compilments.

This is my first roof and so far it seems to be going well. I'm not the greatest welder or best bodyman around that's for sure.

Over the years I've learned alot and done alot. Putting on a roof or a trunk pan was not somthing I thought I was capable of doing several years back. Moparts has really helped me and has kept me motivated. I just want to say thanks Moparts

I'd work out the dings while the skin is off, if you're patient enough you can massage them out instead of grinding and slapping bondo

And then with my grinder on the bad parts. you can't grind too much or you'll cause heat and warp the panel.. Then I used my drill to with the wire wheel to remove as much surface rust as I can

I straightened all the edges and put the roof on. There was 2 beads of seam sealer on the middle support. and proceeded to measure and clamp

I used my grinder to cut down the welds. You have to be careful not to grind too far or you'll weaken your weld ....

You have to be careful around the quarters too. Best to weld a small area at a time. I used screws where the metal wasn't flush , dollied it down then wire wheeled it before welding

And it's done ..... I'll be putting a few skim coats of body filler at the rear quarters and front pillers at a later time. No lead at the seams. I plan on putting on a vinyl roof.

Nice! I just picked up a roof (frome 65belvjim) for my daughter's '67 B-cuda in my sig. Someone at one time put a sunroof in the car and then someone else took it out and welded in a patch. It looks like crap, so I'm going to replace the whole roof.

That's just how this project got started. Someone put a sunroof in and I tried to patch it in. Looked terrible .... then I found the rust and that was it for me .... It wasn't as hard as I thought.
