How do all the racers feel about Mopar allowing the naming rights of Hemi Challenge to usd by the group out of Indiana to promote and run the series? Do you feel that will help or hurt what you guys as racers have built?
Posted By: Ben Holt

Re: 2012 - SS/AH Super Stock - 12/22/11 09:19 PM

I think it's a great idea. Mopar only wants to be in control of their one event (Indy), and not run an actual series. With the several groups that try to run an event (Us, Painter's in Vegas, Mopar Action in Maple Grove, etc.) it will allow some continuity between all the groups, and give the racers a reason to travel a little more. With the possibility of a points fund and solid purses you might see more guys to more races. But this is all in theory. Nothing happens unless sponsors step up and help this grow. All they Nash's are doing is centralizing everything so there is a common theme. (Points, rules, race structure) The Nash's want only to make the "Hemi Challenge" as big as it possibly can be, which will then in turn have better purses and more races. They also own an AH car, and may one day actually race it, so they are seeing this not only from a promoter's viewpoint, but also the racers'.

I support it 100%. It will do nothing but help the SS/AH racing scene grow larger.

I agree with Ben. The Nash folks also keep up the website and event photos without pay I think. I hope the Div. 4 guys help host a Choot out at Cajun Sports Nats in March. So far we have $5k. Hope to get us parked together, catered Cajun supper, more prize stuff etc.

Wet day down here so I did a little research on the class using DRC archives for Indy only.

Serious as they may have been, the rest of the match race clan was just as serious and the evolution of the "funny car" was under way. "Dyno" Don Nicholson was under contract with the Lincoln - Mercury division to compete in a factory backed Comet F/C and he along with Jack Chrisman, and Eddie Scartchman, raised the bar in 1965 with the first "flip top" fiberglass bodied cars. Their performance was dominating, and other racers soon followed their lead. By 1967 the "Kingfish" had become a flip top bodied car, with a state of the art Logghe chassis. Reyes and the "fish" remained competitive, but the expense and grind of maintaining a competitive racer was beginning to concern Bill Taylor. A brief flirtation with retirement from the drag racing scene prompted Taylor to sell the "Kingfish" to local racer T.B. Smallwood. The "Kingfish" name went to Smallwood along with the hardware. Taylor was out; for at least a few months.

Bucky, finish it up and come to Belle Rose Sports Nats in March. Us D4 HEMI "Good Guys" are putting together a "Chootout". Have our payouts done ($10k purse), working on contingency prizes and press release now.

Also having trouble getting CWJ a Louisiana passport but I am pulling strings to get him in. (If he wants to come?) Won't answer my email.

Offer him some fried nutria and mudbugs. I bet he shows up then! Nutria: The other, other, other white meat! It's what's for dinner!

So far, I think Chootout will look something like this for participants:

Probable;
S. Hebert
Kent
Henson
Lloyd W.
Pancake
Perkins
Comella
Campbell

If we get the six from Gators;
Daniels
Wolk
Tueton
Hebert
Zrust
Howes

Maybe's are:
Jeff
Bales
Camo jr
Camo sr
Paillot

NO's are:
Hard (schedule conflict)
Hess
Sean from Ca.
and have heard nothing from West Coast cars

Could have a 16 car field!!!!

I haven't talked to them yet, but I assume that. I know for a fact they do have two cars, but their second is in a holding pattern in a million pieces at our place!

Re: Mopar at the Grove - 06/22/12 12:17 PM

I believe that Diamond is making billet pistons. I saw one on display at Ennis a couple of years ago. It was pretty light for a Hemi piston.
Posted By: moderncylinder

Re: Mopar at the Grove - 06/22/12 01:21 PM

yeah,, ive been running billet,, and now inboard pin forged pistons from diamond for about 6 years now,,, its more about the design of the piston,, dimensions rather than the struts,, there are a few things "wrong" with the piston in the picture

an inboard pin piston from diamond after i lighten it is about 585-600 grams at a 10.250-10.300 deck height,, westcotts millers are 550-575

The posted pics are "representative" of what can be done at Wiseco in billets. This particular part was a Xerox copy of a sample piece supplied by a very well known and respected Hemi builder. Current product won't be posted out of respect to the confidentiality our customers naturally expect.

Re: Spring Nationals - 06/25/12 09:15 PM

Quote:

As the person behind our billet program, I beg to differ. There are tool marks as with any billet, we just choose to have the part look more like a forging in finished form. There are some steps done during machining and heat treat that alleviate the common billet raw look on our parts.

A boxed strutted Hemi piston is hard to forge reliably due to the fact that the "finger" length of the forge punch would be too long to withstand repeated use in manufacturing. You would be lucky to get five forgings out of one run before the punch broke. We manufacture and supply others piston forgings, besides machining pistons. We are one of two companies that make their own forgings and manufacture pistons under the same roof. Most others companies buy from us or APP. If a forging ocould be made reliably we would have done this already "as forged", rather than a billet. We have customers willing to buy tooling for this project.

How quick did you go last year with the your Diamonds?
Posted By: moderncylinder

Re: Mopar at the Grove - 07/11/12 01:04 AM

i had cancer last year and put my motor together with an old block,, needless to say i didnt have much "free" time... the block had been sleeved many times and the ring seal sucks in it,, im changing the block now.. ive sold people pistons for comp, super stock small blocks and for hem is that have had sucess,, i have complete ring seal with my short blocks,, i need to update my head/manifold combo,, which im working on now...

how quick did you go last year in ss/ah?
Posted By: LSP

Re: Mopar at the Grove - 07/11/12 11:50 AM

Hope your health is on the upswing, and your new block gets your motor sealed up. Was just curious how quick the Diamonds have been in AH. I don't have a SS/AH, and never will. Closest I ever got was a SS/BA Hemi build (LSM block/cam, a set of your heads I got from Nicopolis) back in 2004. Sold the stuff while it was still worth something in 2005 when the car owner backed out.
Posted By: moderncylinder

Re: Mopar at the Grove - 07/11/12 02:10 PM

well the fastest pass in an ss/ah car last year with diamond pistons was a mid 8.30,, i think fastest for millers was the same

if one was looking to buy pistons,, though i think i can offer as good as anybody,, your best bet is to goto westcott,, there are many dimensions that go into making a piston that makes power and doesnt crack or scuff the crap out of the walls,, seems like most manufacturers dont know how to do that,, but working with a racer that has made changes to make their stuff live,, is your best bet

Auburn Hills, Mich. — The 2012 Mopar® HEMI® Challenge will take to the track for the 12th consecutive year during the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Aug. 30–31. For the second straight year, $15,000 will go to the winner of the Mopar HEMI Challenge, which pairs Mopar-powered Super Stock/A-HEMI (SS/AH) competitors against each other in a high-stakes quarter-mile showdown.

The Mopar HEMI Challenge began as a one-race shootout at the 2001 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, and returned to that format last year, after a number of seasons as a multi-event mini-series. The race features 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas — the classic package cars that helped build the Mopar brand’s impressive reputation at the drag strip — engaged in quarter-mile battles.

“The Mopar HEMI Challenge continues to grow and build momentum each year,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The NHRA Sportsman drag racers that compete in the Mopar HEMI Challenge are the backbone of the sport, and have a passion for the Mopar brand that they carry with them wherever they go. The Mopar HEMI Challenge is a great way to recognize their passion and dedication to the brand and the sport."

“We are excited to have the Mopar HEMI Challenge event return as part of the tradition-rich Mac Tools U.S. Nationals,” said Eric Lotz, director of field marketing, NHRA. “It has become an important part of the event and a must-see for all sportsman racing enthusiasts.”

Mopar HEMI Challenge qualifying is set for Thursday, Aug. 30, with eliminations scheduled for Friday, Aug. 31. The Mopar HEMI Challenge final round will take place during Funny Car and Top Fuel qualifying rounds on Friday. Along with the $15,000 winner’s purse, $1,500 will be awarded to the runner-up, with $500 going to both the third and fourth-place finishers. The No. 1 Qualifier during the Mopar HEMI Challenge will also take home $500.

Enjoy it while it last as the SuperCar "Race on Sunday; Sell on Monday" are here!!!!

Re: Mopar Shootout - 08/15/12 12:35 AM

Hey guys, we're still broken. Someone should have told me that my Roush motor would last only 3 passes. Anyway I went out and had FJ build a stocker chassis for me. 10.90's at 122, and get this... no valve adjustments... well that just doesn't cut it compared to SS/AH.

Will be at Indy to assist Wendell. See you there.

What's the status of Don Bales? Hope he is still competing. Great competitor and a all round nice guy and family.

Also a consideration for "grand master" should be Harry Holton. Has won many SS hemi class races, including the hemi shootout at indy, as both a driver and engine builder.

Frito's Poem?? - 08/19/12 05:31 PM

About that time!!!

Here's mine: Charlie & Missy can honeymoon at Niagara
if he can beat R&M's VALV-AGRA
Posted By: dannysbee

Re: Frito's Poem?? - 08/19/12 06:39 PM

R&M's hemi is fast, and certainly spendy.

But definately worth it, if it beats Charlie at Indy.

Re: Frito's Poem?? - 08/20/12 01:40 PM

No lines of prose will ever take their place,
Mel Warford & Bill Bales, will be missed at this race. RIP!

Camo car's in the trailer, could the Warfish be bored?
Bayou intel saw him testing, in a Ford!

Sr's drinkin coffee and has an apple for lunch,
but for Storm Tropper power, he's got a bunch.

Running hot was a problem for Missouri Mule,
With Joey D & wife Sue, he should keep his cool.

New paint & driver for the car from Sanibel,
By way of New York, could raise some hell.

He's ran the most races this year of any AH in the place,
Gold Coast Hemi will be there with a smile on Dan's face.

They come ready to play from the North West,
Mike & Tammy Booker will be ready for the test.

Big Jim's been savin up to make a statement this year,
The Carriage Towne entry will make music to the ear.

Tony D's workin hard to get his car together,
New chassis finally done, should make the Honkin Hemi better.

TH will work HARD so as not to look at the sky,
But if it does go up, as a driver he's the guy.

Hardest workin crew around is the car from Jenkins,
Mario,Charlie & Mike keep the Perkins family peakin.

Just heard from the boys in Robesonia, there's a new Earthquake car,
Looks like Gary Wolkwitz is going to raise the bar.

He's always fast and with a smile on his face. (Maybe not after last years race aganist David)
This may be the year it's Jim D & sons race.

It's been 5 long years since we have seen Jake68,
When the green Dart shows, it'll worth the wait.

The MCH boys are always intent on winning,
But even an outing like Maple Grove will have them grinning.

Brad and Darin workin hard with VALV-AGRA on the dyno this year,
Spyphish will have something for the field when he hits 4th gear.

He'll be workin on customers stuff right up untill the last day,
But come Friday, David Barton and an Earthquake will be ready to play.

Hope ISAAC doesn't affect the NOLA boys a lot,
Sure would like to see the car of the bros. Paillot.

You'll know when the Challenge is called and what time,
Big Joe Tueton will be standing on the starting line.

Lil' Joe fresh off a big "WIN" at Maple Grove,
When the big orange truck pulls in, they unlaod in droves.
With a litle extra power from Ray,
Tueton & Hebert will be ready to play.

Tim Hebert almost won in Texas a few weeks ago,
His driving skills could make this one his "Big Go".

If the Militia power fires like a mauser,
We could see some rounds for Brooks and Houser.

I hope to see the flamed Dart all the way from Modesto,
Dave and Erik working hard to make it go.

He was workin hard to come and really came close,
Maybe next year we'll see Wayne Ramose.

With the entry list now hitting on 28,
You gotta see it this year, don't be late.

To be edited and continued.

Round 3

Comella. 8.63
Daniels 8.49 win

Teuton 8.62
Hard 8.48 win

Houser 8.49 red light
CW Jr 8.44 win

I believe Daniels has the bye to the final.
It did appear CW had an issue with the car regarding the staging issue. Doors were open and people running around....but I'm 800ft away so.

Thanks to all the 2012 Indy Hemi Shootout participants!

Great race and the final came down to exactly what you could hope for: The two biggest hemi builders, Barton vs Wescott, Stick vs Auto, #1 & #2 qualifiers,Past and present record holder, and a very VERY close race in the final!

And my bet was against the odds on David in the Earthquake car. Now I'll just hope that someone puts an AH car into the super stock winners circle. I'm with the odds on this one, Lil Joe or Stephen Comella! Or if David runs the Earthquake car in the eliminator

Pictures are up on:

alanis morissette sings about HEMI - 09/11/12 12:53 AM

She called me (don't tell Jane) and sang:

Isn't it ironic, don't you think. A little too ironic, I really do think:

They let Ray.......spacer his head;

Charlie's doubler bar......with all of it's thread;

Yet when I do.....a safety upgrade;

I get kicked out...... when I already paid;

Isn't it ironic? Don't you think?

A little too ironic? I REALLY do think.

No matter. Slow as Christmas.

SS/AH head question - 09/19/12 03:45 AM

I was recently DQed at Indy trying to run the Hemi Shootout. It really did not matter as I was not fast. I do have 4 1/4"-20 allen bolts visable on the outside of the head as a valvetrain saftey measure and my NHRA letter cited "No external modifications to the head". So I am removing them and acknowledge my mistake as they are visable. NHRA will allow me to pass tech at next race and all is well.

I now have a better idea. My question before I do it, is can I mill the intake runner past the top of the valve cover bolt holes, and use the bottom remaining threads to hold an adapter plate so I can put the valve cover back on so it will seal? This will allow me to open the intake runner up. Of course I will have to hike up the intake as well. Will these spacers be perceived as an "external modification" since it seems I am already the "bad boy" of Hemi. I just hate to do all this work and not pass. Thanks in advance for your advice. Are any of the SS/AH cars running oil contianment diapers or belly pans? If so i would love to see photo's if possible. Trying to figure out how to come up with something effective for my NSS car. I noticed looking at pics of the new cars this year some guys have the headers dumping out towards the side of the car. Is there a reason for this? just wondering if it helps in adding a belly pan, or is it for some other reason?

thanks for any input.

Re: Dutch - 10/14/12 06:40 PM

Boss- I talked with Ray at the track and He never said he was going to protest Charlie. I will say he was very angry being labeled a cheater and I don't blame him.

Made me sick to my stomach with the Comella's. Just glad Steve was alright. The only Parma powerplant in the shootout.

And I agree about Lil' Joe! Hoping he doubles up with a win today!

Re: Dutch - 10/15/12 05:10 PM

Here is a pic of my engine, with the flange that is broken. It was said by some that I had my intake bolted to an adapter at indy. Clearly it isnt. I sent similar pics to NHRA 5 mins ago at their request, because I have nothing to hide.
As far as me not going to the grove, we felt that this deal needs to get handled by NHRA, which I am certain it will based on recent conversations with them.
We were not afraid to go there because of possible protest. I was prepared to protest the whole Barton team if it was nessasary. 300.00 per car isnt much money, and you get it back if they are illegal anyways.
It is my resposibility to my customers to provide them with the latest, best parts. When I heard this was being done, I asked if it was legal, I got a flat "NO!" so I asked why can others do it.
That was last December. It has taken till now to get anything done.
The part that upsets me is the typical response when someone is caught cheating. "well, HE is doing this (fill in the blank)" "We have been doing this for .... years".
I dont really care what anyone thinks, It is my job to run my business, and provide componants that are able to win, and that is what I will continue to do.

Something else I heard that was a joke, "we get torn down all the time, they never said anything"
When was the last time someone other than me or my dad has been torn down? We have won every teardown race for the last 2 years, Daniels won indy 3 years ago, or it would be at least 3 years.

Re: Dutch - 10/15/12 06:13 PM

Stewart, Check out the green, which is the bottom of the intake. You can then tell where the head is broken.
Posted By: bwdst6

Re: Dutch - 10/15/12 06:33 PM

Stupid question: Why wouldn’t you just fix the head?

ALso, we have run our bracket hemi’s sometimes without even using the valve cover to head bolts. We would just double the o-rings on the spark plug tubes and the oem valve covers would seal just fine. Heck since the flange is missing at the top you could probably just overlap a thick gasket, cover it with silicon and it would probably seal.

I think the rule is as clear as it can get. It has been clear for as long as the rule has been in place. The only problem is that it wasnt enforced.
As a Stock & SuperStock cylinder head guy i think the rule needs to be taken as is and the subject needs to be dropped.NHRA has done there job on making this rule clear and now they just need to enforce it and stay within the guidlines and wording!!! Its pretty cut and dry guys.

No Disrespect to anyone but lets move on and let the chips fall where they may!

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/22/12 01:46 AM

The problem with that theory is NHRA has let this stuff go for so long, not only are 75% or more of the AH racers current heads illegal, but all their old stuff also…

You want to talk about class killer…

And No, I'm not currently affected. My SS/DA hemi heads are legal to the rules and my AH stuff will be raced in bracket mode in local ECSSSA circuit races. Makes alot of VERY expensive current hemi heads worthless…except for AH circuit racers like myself

Dan,,, you have old Barton stuff from marvel/bàughman,, going by what Eric says they are illegal,,, everybody at Indy this year was illegal going on what Eric says,,, if you see the valve cover bolt hole exposed in the int face,, it's illegal,, rule says int face may not be cut into any part of screw hole,,, any part,, tech says that means at the v cover sealing surface,, but if you listen to Eric and go as written,, it's any part,, so if that is enforced,, I'd say one person will have the advantage

We need this clarified

Happy thanksgiving to all

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/22/12 10:03 PM

If you take Jeff's reply and change "Erik" to "NHRA" That's pretty much how a rule is supposed to be taken. Not everyone at indy was illegal because none of my stuff has the bolt hole exposed what so ever because i take the rules as "written" and let the Tech officials figure it out.If anyone thinks the 2 cc's you gain from the two different interpretations of the rule is going to be the difference between 8.90 and 8.30 they are sadly mistaken! Im all in favor of NHRA adding "At the valve cover sealing surface" to the rule book, that way people can take the rule as written!!!!!!!

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/23/12 03:21 AM

It seems to me that the amendment is towards "stock" class heads. If it were for super stock, wouldn't it have been under "super stock cylinder heads"? The short block amendments are separated between the two.

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/23/12 03:58 PM

DefBob, at the begining of the super stock rules:

Requirements and specifications for all Super Stock categories are the same as those for Stock Cars - Section 10A - with the following exceptions:

Unless it is written othrwise, the stock rule applies.

And my point in all of this is that if NHRA does something about all the fighting within the class according to the way the rule book is currently written, There will be alot of very expensive junk hemi heads.

There needs to be an ammicable solution and the majority of hemi heads deemed legal. If the valve cover gasket fits and minimal thread cutting involved, there needs to be a cc penalty or spacer made.

As Erik has stated, a few cc's will not kill the performance of these cars that much. And if you think it will, do a new set of heads sans penalty cc's...
Posted By: moderncylinder

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/23/12 04:14 PM

if you think there are 2 cc's difference in the intrepretation of the rule,, you,,,,, are sadly mistaken

when the rule book says one thing,, then you talk to tech and they say this is how we meant it,, then you talk to different divisions and they say this,,, when others say that,, you now have 3 versions of the same rule depending on who you ask in nhra,,, or racers

we just need this clarified,, which should happen in the next few weeks

SANE? AH Hemi! OXYMORON

was first in line at R&M Black Friday sale. Got some more 1/4"X 20 bolts.

Currently cheating out 49 Ward Lafrance for Great Race in June.

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/24/12 07:09 PM

So going by the rule, as it is written, IF I machine the intake surface around the valve cover bolt and the valve cover bolt threads are untouched, but the intake surface itself has been completely machined away and a new intake surface rigged up to work behind the valve cover bolts, with the intake machined to match this new head intake surface, is this legal? Not in the spirit of the rule, I know, but I do not see where it states the intake has to be completely flat along the surface. Or did I miss this? By the letter of the rule, this would seem to be legal unless it states the head surface has to be completely flat the entire length of the head-intake surface.
Not trying to point fingers at anyone, but it looks like that is what was done on the picture of the Camo head (I am probably wrong). A friend that builds SB Chevys does this and has never been busted.
Seems like it would make some GM & Ford heads illegal too.

How about posting a picture of the camo head you are referring to ?

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/24/12 10:45 PM

The picture is on page 8 near the end. The one posted earlier by Charlie. See the green part of the gasket on the intake with the small square opening. It appears to b just there to clear the VC bolt that was left intact. Pet rules, I agree it would b legal.

If you will employ close range industrial terrestrial photogrammetry (why I get the big bucks!) using that single photo and an actual motor you can gain 3210 lbs of info. Two overlapping photos would be better, the standard, but microns are microns, all 25,400 per inch. I now know the angle of the bolt combined with the angle of the mill cut, how many internal threads should be missing, cut, and where. Can reverse engineer cc volume. Can listen and map his incar stuff. Know everything but how to outrun him......

SS/AH 3480- you don't have an AH car do you?

I don't know anyone that would make a statement like that who even remotely cares about the class

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/25/12 05:26 PM

Jay Thorne has had a hemi car for quite a while. I sold him some pistons about 5 years ago. He doesnt have alot of money, and does everything himself.

Why does it seem that EVERYONE is on the same page except Barton, and John K (press secretary for barton).
Unless you are one of the menbers of the barton car club, you dont have anything to worry about.

So just because I think that if the rule was enforced and the stuff that has been turned a blind eye to for so many years was illegal, I don't care about the class? ..... If you don't think I care about the class you're mistaken

I've been wrong before. I hope you do care about the class and have enough foresight to see if the majority of heads are thrown out, SS/AH will probably never recover.

And its the little guys that this will hit the hardest. 10 yr old AH heads are still illegal

What about Erik Jones?

It seeems he and I are on the same page as far as reading the rule. And FJ Smith also, although he thinks I'm an idiot for asking if I could race a head thats are milled into the vc threads, LOL!.

And the difference is when Eric said toss everyone, I stated lets figure out a way to save ALL the castings already out there.

I never said to toss anyone! It was a simple statement that the rule is perfectly clear and that this subject needs to be dropped. Its obvious that Charlie (The fastest guy in the country) understands the rule, the picture speaks for its self!

That is very comforting to hear.

My point is that the way the rule is currently written, 90% of the AH cars are not Super Stock legal. This BS started when one group of racers were singled out for going a little farther than the rest with it.

If one or all of that elite group are bounced and deemed illegal, do you really think that will hurt them? Maybe their pride, LOL! Its the group way beyond them that will suffer the consequences. The little guy AH racers. The Jay Thornes or Dan Zrusts or really the countless heads in SS/AA, BA, CA, DA and EA that will suffer. Once NHRA takes a stand and throws one set of heads out, there are countless others that will be affected by this. And the countless others don't have the money to recover so easily. That is my point.

Charlie can call me the Barton secretary, I'm flattered! I secretly threw my warfish shirt away, and took off my camo underwear though! But I don't consider myself an AH racer. Just because I now own an AH car I don't feel like I am in that elite group. I am a Super Stock hemi racer though and look up to ALL the AH racers like looking up at a big brother.

I go to the track to make friends not enemies. One SS/AH competitor told me his take on this whole fight:

the AH guys like going fast and the spectators love it why slow us down. What's done is done move on Amen

My thought exactly! Just don't try to single one guy out and burn him at the stake, because your burning countless others you never thought about

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/27/12 02:01 PM

"Intake side of head may not be cut into any part of valve cover bolt holes. Valve cover bolt holes must remain unaltered and in their original location." Illegal is illegal. Scrap anything that violates this rule and build new heads. Sell me the old illegal heads really cheap.

I've had the thought that MP should make raw castings available to those high dollar engine/head builders. You could move the valve angles and machine the valve cover bolt holes to whatever depth you wanted, or weld a stud to the upper row of bolt "holes", or where the holes would be?

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/27/12 02:34 PM

do the stockers and/or chevy guys cut the intake face so far they break int the bottom of the valve cover bolt (not sure what to call them...holes,wells,threaded cavity,,) also???...if not will there be a special "hemi" rule?
Posted By: moderncylinder

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/27/12 09:15 PM

a hemi is i think the only engine with an intake face angle more than 90 degrees to the deck,, 103 to be exact,,, most engines are 90 or less than 90,, so it would be impossible for the most part to cut the face and not break into the top before you break into the bottom,,

ok,, so when you have a question about the rules,, you ask the nhra tech,, not other racers,, if tech tells you what you can and cant do,, thats what you go by,, because after all they will be telling you if youre legal or not after you race,, so jay,, john,, whoever,, you may have a perception of the rule the way it is written,,, but nhra tech are the ones whose perception matters

the problem arives in that a person asked their tech from their division if they could do something and they said yes,, the guy made an argument about something,, and the tech agreed,, so the guy went and did it,, now the higher up tech says no you cant do that,, so it is being worked out/figured out,,, all that needs to happen is that we all have the same rule and its enforced no matter what division,, what race,, who you are,,, no matter what...

jay,, if you know of an engine with a int face angle greater than 90,, let me know,, other than a hemi i cant think of any

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/27/12 09:19 PM

This was originally a "Chevy" rule- the intake face of a SBC is at such an angle that the valve cover bolt hole would be comprimised before any of the adjoining threads, the same is NOT true on a Hemi, the angle of the intake face is such that the threads are cut into way before the bolt hole as viewed from the valve cover. On a SBC, the valve cover bolt hole is a clear limit to how far the intake face can be cut, on a Hemi, the limit is variable, depending on how deep the threads were cut into the head, either by the factory or by others.

Re: hemi super stock heads - 11/27/12 11:27 PM

what would stop you from angle cutting the intake face to gain an advantage?...i understand what your saying jeff ...i just dont understand how anyone(tech guy) could of ever told someone its ok to
cut into the bottom of the valve cover bolt threaded cavity...(obviously its not a hole)...i mean seriously anyone that reads the rulebook could figure that out...alot of other stuff is the same way(carb offset, crossram intakes)...seems theres noone to nip it in the bud from the start...do they (tech guys) just not know any better?..do they think its coool to have a fast car from their division???...oh well i guess it is what it is...

Off the head subject what do you guys run for piston side clearance in these SS/AH engines. I picked up a SS short block that has a lot..kinda scary.

2013 Hemi Chootout - 12/06/12 04:43 PM

March 22-24 at No Problem Raceway Cajun Sports Nationals. Details to follow but it should be bigger than last year which had 15 cars, party's, packed stands and some of the best side by side's of all year. I thought Daniels wheelie was going to land at the Superdome.

PS Race subject to ending of Mayan Calendar and/or PHISHCAL CLIFF....LOL
