1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 07:59 PM

We'll here it is my new car I just picked up. It's a 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed. It's originaly b5 blue with white top and white interior and billboard. I've got previous owner history on it and the car was hit in the front back in the early 80's. They installed real nice 71 barracuda fenders on it from a 71 barracuda and also took the grill out of that same car. The car did end up having the original motor which was a bonus. No fender tag at this time but I contacted the body shop that did the work on the car and there going to dig through some parts boxes to see if they can turn something up. I've already ordered up a new gas tank and sending unit and am going to try and fire it up over the long weekend. There's a crazy long story behind this car and I can hardly believe we've actually got a second chance to get it. Short version is my brother had the chance to buy this car for $7500 back in 95 and after many years of seaching I finally found it and bought it.

Ryan that looks alot better then I pictured plus Numbers engine. Whats with the Grande Coupe Cluster & 70 seats? Is it an early build or something? Is the door sticker still there?

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 08:32 PM

Parts are from a 71 gran coupe that he bought to fix alot of stuff on this car. The white interior was in sad shape so he took the seats out the gran coupe which was in better shape. He liked the woodgrain face better so he took that off as well. The grill and fenders came off of that car as well. I wasnt sure what the seats came out of at first but a guy on here showed me they came out of a 71 barracuda gran coupe. The previous owner may still have the original seats

Ryan,71 Gran Coupes came with leather seats,or cloth/vynal seats. neither looked like those.

I didnt relize what the seats came out of either untill I got help from a fellow moparts member. They were an optional vinyl bucket seat for the 71 gran coupe.

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 08:46 PM

I never seen those seats in a Gran Coupe. I had three 71 Gran Coupes, two had the leather, which were sweet looking seats, one had vynal with cloth inserts. I didn't know there were any vynal seats offered in the Gran Coupes. Learn something new everyday!

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 08:49 PM

I'm just glad there the 71 seats now all I need to do is add new legendary white seat covers to them. I'm just going to get it running and detail the engine bay up, add new exhaust, tank, lines, seat covers, put the white billboard decal back on it. The cool thing now is I'll have two white billboard cars. Cant really proove the billboard thing on this ragtop except from previous owner or maybe I'll get lucky and find a buildsheet in the original seats if the previous owner can turn them up.

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 08:52 PM

Cool find, again Ryan! Those seats will be great cores. Sweet ride. Check on top of the glove box liner for a build sheet also. Did you sell the Satellite yet?

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/21/11 08:57 PM

congrats,, now some McRibb'n

""It's originaly b5 blue with white top and white interior and billboard.""- ANY BS FT? was it white billboard? or black white resells better, especially with the "white top" and "white gut." interior looks black to me, door panels, seats,

they may have the FT.. give them a week to repop one... have them add a N96 to the top row.. and white billboard call out..

looks like burnt bronze with orange gut thats how i remember that car back when i had my MULLIT

matching motor?? now it does......

that s what we call an, " AMERICAN CAR " a melting pot of other cars all poured into one car . .

just the normal, moparts BS i thought i get it out of the way.... all in one message cool car, i love B5/ white

i hope you find the BUILD SHEET , or am i the only one thinking this??

ok, i'm ready for a bad "chevy" joke comment

Nothing attached to the glove box. Still have the satellite ragtop for now but it will to go as I'm going to need to pay off the loan I took out for this car.

Just got back from picking up Ryans car tonight.
He is excited as my dad is with his bee.
Turns out the car is much more solid than we thought.

Mark, this one was kind of in your backyard.
Located on Sebago Lake for the last 16 or so years since I missed out on it.
Ryan already has the back seat out and is going right at it cleaning the interior.
Here is a couple pics.

Just ordered a new carpet(the one in it looks like and old JC Whitney one), seat covers, fender louvers, white billboard, chin spoilers. Still want to add a spoiler and road lamps but I'll pick those up later on down the road when I can afford them. I'll be adding my new poly glas tires to the rallies this weekend and adding a nice set of original 71 centers and trim rings. I should be able to have this looking alot better really quick.

That is one we pulled out of Buffalo.
I bought if for the convertible wheel caps and a rain gutter area.
Did not have the heart to turn it into a soda can. So we plopped it on the shelf. Here it is on the way home from picking it up.
Ryan's was a little more fun and easy picking up.

Don't insult Daniel like that!

Daniel works in a tiny shop in Peru, uses no tools you'd reccognize (in fact he makes most of his from junk he finds in the scrap yard), and turns out the most impressive metalwork I've ever seen! He's CRAZY talented!

But it is much easier driving my clone around and just walking in the garage to see the Cuda on the shelf.

Ok, Mark. I will go out and get a photo.
Tetanus shot required for this next photo.
Came out of the same yard the Sassy Cuda came from.
1971 Challenger Ragtop. Butterscotch 318 car. Or atleast it was.
Believe it or not the convertible structural parts are very nice.

Well I got alittle more done on the 71 cuda ragtop. Just going through and cleaning it up alittle and detailing a few things. Reshot the rear tail panel, and cleaned up and polished the tail lights. Had a brand new bumper kicking around and threw that on it. Took the rear end out of it to take it down to be sand blasted and cleaned up. I'll repaint it up correct and throw it back in. Also picked up a new gas tank, shocks and lines. I'll clean the under side of the car up now while every thing is off it. Also ordered a new tti exhaust for it. I'll be ready for next summer, cant wait.

I ended up cutting holes in the fenders for right now and I'll pick up a set of AMD louvered fenders for it a Carlisle next year. The louvers in the fender make the car look much better IMO. They actually dont look that bad, the fenders on the car had some work done to them so I didnt feel that bad about doing that to them.

Ryan, is your garage full now? I wish I had more room in my garage so I could get this 67 GTX out of my enclosed trailer. This one is 100% complete and has its original drivetrain. 440, 4 speed, dana 60. I can`t wait to dive into this one someday.

lol, pretty full. It's like a big puzzle moving the cars around. That car looks really nice Mark.

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 11/30/11 12:47 AM

Thanks. I actually bought two of them, both 4 speed dana cars. The other one is outside. Rick and I took our trucks and trailers to get them. It was a fun day. The other one is rough but... It has a locked up 383, original 18 spline 4 speed and dana 60. It`s black right now but was originally daffodil yellow. I`ve got the 67 Plymouth B body sickness as bad as you have the E body sickness. I now have 3 67 GTX`s... I`d be in the same boat even of my garage was bigger. Bigger garage = more cars/parts. I`m hoping to be able to clean the 10,000 nos parts out of my garage over the winter so that I can at least put the EE1 blue GTX in there and get it out of my enclosed trailer. Totally a-d-d right now...

I'll be adding the white billboard to my 71 this week along with the chin spoilers and hood pins. I'm also putting the white billboard stripe on the bronze cuda. The bronze cuda is a real billboard car as well but with proof.

That looks very similar to the one my friend is selling. His is a numbers matching 340 auto with build sheet and fender tags present. Some original paint but could use a restoration.

As hard as it was to put it up there; I do not see it coming down for quite some time.

I do have to tack the windshield frame back on and slice some wheels in half at some point.

Next on my to do list is install new carpet, chin spoilers, hood pins, rocker trim and black out below it, and install new white seat covers. I'll add a spoiler and road lamps later on. I'm also going to install a new white top as mine now looks really dirty white compared to the new billboard stripe(lol).

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 12/02/11 12:37 AM

You guys are going to think I'm full of crap but I just got off the phone with Stephen who owned my cuda from 80 to 96 and he said he does have the back seat to my car. The crappy thing is that I have to wait till the 22nd of this month when he comes back up to his mothers house where the seat is at, which is right behind our house. He's also got a bunch of other parts left over from doing the cuda but the rear seat is pretty much the only thing that he has that originaly came out of my car. What a Christmas present that would be to find the broadcast sheet in it still(lol). I also asked him about where my original tranny went and he told me that the tranny that's in it is the one that was in it when he bought it in 1980. So there probably a fat chance that I'll ever find the original tranny.
Another weird thing I found out was the car was painted about a half mile from where I work. It is a little rinky dink car sales lot. I'll drive my car down to his shop this summer and I bet he'll be quite surprised to see it again still wearing the old painted he sprayed on it back in the early 80's.

Now I need to install new tti exhaust, and detail the ralleys up and install my new F60 polyglas tires. I've also got to install new white legendary seat covers. In a couple of weeks I'll be able to pick up my original back seat for it, I can hardly wait to see if my build sheet is in it.

Our buddy works for the state and dropped off truck loads. We actually had to get rid of many of them. Got a chance to drive my dads A12 yesterday. Drove them over to the local truck stop. The A12 is a beast. Ryan dug out his cuda as well and also liked the cold air.. Everytime we go out for a ride we think its the last for the season but mother nature is being kind to us this year so far.....far......

Do you guys think I should put my new polyglas tires on the 15" ralleys or black steel rims? I've got the correct centers on the back ralleys and have the correct ones for the front as well but just havent put them on yet. I will need to pick up a set of correct trim rings for it if I decide to go with the ralleys. I think it originally came with ralleys.

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 01/02/12 06:53 PM

Rallyes for several reasons. #1 they came on it. #2 they look better. #3 I like steelies but on bare bones street brawler cars, convertible Cudas (even with Hemi's) don't really fit into that theme IMO.

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 01/02/12 07:18 PM

Cool, thanks for the reply. I was kind of leaning that way. Were black steel rims available on 71 cudas? Was it just 71 hemi cudas that got them?

Re: 1971 cuda convertible 340 4 speed - 01/02/12 07:20 PM

Yes, but they weren't an option, they were standard. Early 71 cars had body color steel wheels, later 71's got black wheels regardless of body color

thats pretty awesome! Looks like a handful in that garage! Like the crushed artwork also. I have an A12 Superbee liftoff hood that lifted off going down the track hanging on my wall, i thought that was cool til I saw the whole car!

To the OP.

Beautiful car! Do you mind sharing how much you paid for it?

Just dropped out the whole motor, tranny, k frame out the bottom of the car on our drive line jig for a quick reseal and detail. The clutch was spent as well and I ordered a new one. New green bearing for the rear axles and the gears will be looked over as well as I have a small vibration coming from my rear end. New front end kit will be installed as well. The bushings were all spent on it. Will have some more pics coming soon. I held off on repainting the engine bay as I'll do that when I do the whole car over down the road.

Congrats on the kid. I sold a semi survivor 69 A12 Black 4 speed road runner so I could make and prepare for my son. Also had to sell my 09 Challenger R/T classic B5 six speed car for a 4 door baby cruiser. Welcome to the club!

Thanks, I'm not excited about selling it but I dont want to be stressed out during a time I should be happy and excited. I'll probably never have another real 71 cuda convertible but I'll alway have a cool mopar in my garage.

Ryan you and your brother are in the Top 10 Mopar Hounds I know.

You always find one cool Mopar after another. My kids are starting to get older but I always managed to have a cool car or two or three.....around.

Congrats on the upcoming child and the best of luck.

You sure made that Cuda look great in a short amount of time
I am looking forward to your next "find"

Dave
