My 69 HEMI Charger got paint!!!! :) - 10/27/11 06:56 PM

Underside....

Dip Primer gray with F8 Green overspray...

Actually it's 2 stage paint mixed to match the dip primer grey (thanks Rick Kreuziger for sending me color match samples of the primers!!! ). Then we dusted the f8 paint in the overspray patterns and then we got all clearcoated with matte Glassurit clear!!!

Looks good, hard to tell its not primer, and it should provide years of protection and it will be super easy to wipe clean if stained!!!

Re: My 69 HEMI Charger got paint!!!! :) - 10/27/11 07:36 PM

Are you going to mask off the underside of the car so that the REAL overspray doesn't screw up your FAUX overspray ?
Posted By: domingo

Re: My 69 HEMI Charger got paint!!!! :) - 10/27/11 07:58 PM

Thanks!

Yes, I will mask everything off to protect it...

I know what you are saying John, why not let the natural overspray get under the car when painting it, and be done with it....

I did not because I still need to prep the exterior body panels on the car and all would get messed up with the blocking dust. So Id rather finish the inside, bottom, mask it, and forget about it....

Its the way i chose to do it. All that matters is the end result right???

Besides, I wanted for the underside to look like it looks now for a long time....and as I'm sure you know, for proper paint adhesion you only have a time window to apply a layer of paint atop the other, and if I only did the dip primer, and if it was just a few days later that I did the exterior paint (which will be actually more than that) the paint and clear overspray wouldnt have proper bonding with the dull clearcoated dip primer gray, and i didnt want stuff to flake off or come off if I wiped the road and dirt grime later on if I wanted to keep the underside of the car clean.

The whole point for me is to drive these cars, not to display them and drive em off and on a trailer. So whatever looks original, but will actually protect the car for years to come and keep looking just like the day I did it, is what Im looking for here!!!

trust me, Ive thought this over plenty!!!

Just urethane sealer, I bought those tubes that you have to apply with an aplicator gun. I cut the tip the biggest I could, and really applied it on REAL THICK. Then I just bought a brush and cut it in small pieces (as big as a barbers brush) and I brushed and spread the sealer. Its better to use a brush that has stiff bristles.

The key hear is to do it fast and not overdo it, you want to brush and push the sealer right in the middle to make the sealer get into the seam and leave the edges of the sealer just spread out so the spread and habve a "round" oozed off look on the sides. You want to brush just once, max twice and be done with it.

Thats it!

To those who are wondering why I left the passenger compartment sealer off, as well as the inner quarter panel undercoat...there is a reason. Yes I know that those were also applied BEFORE paint and clear....but, it was black petroleoum based sealer, and the undercoat was also petroleoum based. So it was applied, and then the floors and trunk got painted while it was still kinda fresh so after a while the sealer ended up sucking up - vanishing the paint to the point where it almost seams that the black sealer and undercoat were applied AFTER the paint. But when you look close you can see that you can still find some traces of paint over the sealer and undercoat.

So thats why Im gonna applied the sealer and undercoat over the paint, let it dry for about a month and then Im gonna dust some f8 paint over it to achieve the look that you find when looking at an original survivor type car. Ive done it before and it does look like the real thing that way.

Because 2 stage is so much nicer!!!

And on the underside, I also used 2 stage because you cant get single stage paint in a matte (non shiny) finish. At least down here we dont have matte single stage paint.

Car looks great Domingo. Everyone has a different take on how to do things; I think your underside treatment is cool and innovative. I would have applied the quarter panel treatment and interior sealer 1st, but....

I know one thing for sure: I LOVE fresh F8.....not sure why?

Hey Norm, also, when you spread the sealer over the primer...you will probably think you didnt do it right, but its the contrast in colors (white sealer over the primer) that will get you thinkning that you didnt do a good job, and you will be tempted to spread the sealer some more and overdo it!!!...Just leave it, and when you spray it body color, it instantly looks good!!!!

So dont overdo it! Resist the urge to do so!!! LOL

last!!!

....I know this was applied b4 paint.....but when you check out original cars, its almost like it was applied after because the paint was sucked in by the tar and the paint residues are barely noticeable. I dont know though what extent of time this happened really, so I decided to paint, seal, and then once the sealer is dry Ill just dust it over very slitghly with some F8 paint to replicate the original look you would fin on a survivor typoe car...

Heat lamp of some sort might help. Even if you took a cheap "tin hat" type heatlamp with a generic light bulb might speed up the process.

Re: My 69 HEMI Charger got paint!!!! :) - 11/26/11 10:18 PM

The tar sealer is slowly drying....I guess 1 more month till it's completely dry. I will then finish off the paintjob....Im just letting the body sit there until its dry...

In the meantime I have lots of things to restore and get ready to mount on the freshky painted shell once its done!!!

So, I have decided to work on the engine now. I am gonna rebuild the numbers matching HEMI engine. Its going 30 over, I already bought a brand new and balanced rotating assembly: eagle 4,15" stroke crank and stock size rods, and 0.030" over diamond forged pistons. So its gonna be a 477 CID hemi. I got my blueprinted and balanced rotating assembly off Best Machine Racing engines, so I know its done right and ready to drop in!

Im gonna build it with 10,5:1 compression.

The block is really nice and there is no corrossion at all in the water jackets. Looks like new!!! In fact I have never seen a used favtory block as clean as this one-

Now the heads are another story...they had been ported and whoever did the job got a bit carried away so they are junk. Its a shame because the water jacekts on these heads were perfect as well, and they had no cracks at the chambers. The port walls were left too thin after porting though and they cracked.

Oh well....since the original heads are no useable, I just opted to get brand new aluminum heads for it. I gor a great deal on a pair of brand new alum MP eddy heads, and I sent em over to Jeff at Modern Cylinder head. I know these heads are not exact in appearance to the originals (shape of the alterntor boss, some extra ribs or bumps at the end of the head, etc) but they are dimensionally the same and all the stock components bolt on. Really only 1% of the people looking at the engine inside the car would notice, and since its only a bolt on item I'm not sweating it. Its not like Im not gonna miss that correct bump on the end of the head or the correctly shaped alternator boss with 600 HP under my right foot! LOL This is what I got back...

Re: My 69 HEMI Charger got paint!!!! :) - 03/23/12 04:15 PM

We like to put some basecoat on the car before hitting the paint booth. We thought this one was ready for the paint booth when looking at it in primer, but after some f8 paint we could still catch some flaws.

Some people say that doing this will cause paint adhesion problems afterwards, but that is not true, as long as you scuff the paint ENTIRELY once more after hitting the paint booth. Then you spray it with 2 more coats of base and then clear and it works just fine!

Also we like to do it this way because since its all covered already with the right shade of basecoat then it's a lot easier to get full paint coverage. Even if it it goes a bit thin inside the paintbooth in a spot that doesnt get as much paint as others it will still show the right color even if it got a teeny bit less paint.
