My 70 Charger R/T project - home from paint 11/25/17 - 03/11/11 10:45 PM
The fun has begun!!!!!!My goal is to have this finished by spring of 2012. I hope I make it. Body work is just getting under way. It is being handled by Vance Cummins out of West Michigan. My project is a 70 Charger R/T 440-4 speed. FJ5 with white bucket/console interior. I do not have the matching # drive train so I am going with a 440-6 instead. 70 440 HP Motor is done and ready to install. I will try to post every few weeks with some progress photos. The first few are shortly after I dropped it off for start of body work.

Ready to get started on metal replacement...needs trunk floor, extensions, driver front floor, quarters and a few other repairs. Car was out of Montana so has great looking underside.

Re: My 70 Charger R/T project is finally underway - 03/11/11 10:49 PM
Roof skin was removed to have it chemically stripped. Someone along the line DA'd some of the outer panels and never primed them. The metal was pitted so we chose to strip the roof. Also replacing the upper cowl with a mint original. It is laying in place in this photo. Mine had some dents, dings as well as some rust thorugh in the lower window channel.
You can alos see in the photo that someone robbed the Z bar mounting bracket and part of the frame rail with a cutting torch. They also removed the 4 speed hump and a large section of the DS floor pan. This will all be repaired shortly.

Trunk lid was chem stripped/dipped and has been primed. One very minor metal repair was required on this original lid.

Wow that is gonna be a great project. Have you seen another car like it with its combo of options? It always amazes me when you wonder what other cool cars were "parted" out back in the day.
Good luck with the resto, I can't wait to see the progress

I have not come across another with this color combo yet. Lots of FJ5 cars....mostly with black interior and top...still looking for another with white interior and black C stripe. I suspect this is a fairly rare combo. I plan to go with the hood black out treatment as well.

I had a '70 R/T charger back in the early '90s that was FJ5 with black int and c-stripe, hood black out and no vinyl top. the white int will set yours apart!

Thanks for all of the compliments guys! The color combo is the main reason I went after this car. It is a major project but I think it will be a real head turner when it is done. It should look awesome parked next to my FJ5 and black 70 Road Runner. I will try to keep the post updated as best I can over the coming months.

Stopped at the shop today to see what progress has been made. They are moving along quite well. Here is a shot of the trunk sheet metal removed. They were part way through sand blasting the rails outdoors when some rain blew in.

Re: My 70 Charger R/T project is finally underway - 06/24/11 06:38 AM
Quarters have been partially removed. Complete quarters will be put on. However, they wanted to ensure the fit will be good before removing the entire panel. Decided today to go with new outer wheel houses as the lips were not as good as expected on the originals.

Re: My 70 Charger R/T project is finally underway - 06/24/11 06:48 AM
Tail panel work is also in progress. Original lower valence is being repaired and will be re-used. Tail panel will require a few patches but is overall pretty decent. We decided today to order new lower valance end caps as the originals were going to need too much repair. There will also need to be a few patch panels made for the bumper reinforcement mounting area.
For those wondering the entire car will be plastic media blasted after the sheet metal repair has been completed. They are spot sand blasting where required to make the sheet metal repairs. I am fairly confident this will be a good decision.
Doors, fenders, hood and some other items have already been delivered to the media blaster. It is nice to finally see some momentum. I hope we can keep it going.

Full 1/4 panels were chosen in lieu of replacing the lower sections. The lowers were rusted/rotted pretty much from the front of the wheel openings to the rear of the panel. Also had some rust in the areas around the bottom of the rear window corners. With the improved quality of the newer replacment AMD full quarters we opted for this choice verus piecing all the new metal in these areas. We could have gone either way. However, I trust Vance's judgment on this as he is well recognized in the Mopar community as a top notch restorer.

A wise decision, much better to replace the ENTIRE qtr, than play with patches, that regardless of how well they were done, will come back to haunt you many years down the road....it's going to be a killer car when completed

This car did come out of Montana. Came into Michigan several years ago as just a rolling shell. That is how I bought it. If it is the same car it must have been parted out at some point. I do not have any real history on it. PM me if you have any details you can share. Thanks Joe

WOW!!! wish i had a project car like yours. The '68-'70 Charger R/Ts are the epitome of muscle cars (imho).
...keep the updates coming.
awsome car,, why full, 1/4s??? they looked decent??
looks great,,, i hope you got a "set" price on all the metal work.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" /> instead of by the hour.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whistling.gif" alt="" />
jc
Full 1/4 panels were chosen in lieu of replacing the lower sections. The lowers were rusted/rotted pretty much from the front of the wheel openings to the rear of the panel. Also had some rust in the areas around the bottom of the rear window corners. With the improved quality of the newer replacment AMD full quarters we opted for this choice verus piecing all the new metal in these areas. We could have gone either way. However, I trust Vance's judgment on this as he is well recognized in the Mopar community as a top notch restorer.
Good call going with full 1/4s. I did the patch panel thing on the '68 Dart 20 years ago because full 1/4s were not available (except $$$$ NOS). It held up well, but have recently installed AMDs full 1/4s...so much nicer.

You mean you had to reorder the entire quarter panel? Or do you mean the quarter extensions?

A couple photos from last week.
Windshield and rear glass installed. Dash and headliner installed. Now on to side glass, carpet, door panel and seat installation.
I hope to get car back to the painter in a few weeks for final cut & buff, touch up and finishing C stripe (original upper stripe was too short). If all goes well.... I will be done by Christmas.
