1968 Coronet.....getting a make over. - 12/16/10 07:51 PM

Hey all, This is one of my current projects. It's a 1968 Coronet 440 model, 318 automatic with a/c. I am in the process of changing it into a R/T Hemi clone. I bought the car in the fall of '08 and then bought a new 426 crate Hemi in the summer of '09.
Here is a pic of the car the day I picked it up.

I sanded the body down to the bare metal and then got set up to sand blast the under side of the car.

The car had patch panels put on the bottom of the 1/4's before I bought it. I didn't like how they stepped the weld seam. It looked horrible from inside the trunk. Plus it required a lot of body fill at the wheel lip opening. I was also worried about hidden rust comming through the lip from the outer wheel house. So I replaced the 1/4's and outer wheel house and trunk extentions.

Hemi cars also have an extra plate welded at the rear of the leaf spring mount. I noticed on a real hemi car that the factory welds were quit sloppy. So I made my welds sloppy too.

I didn't get any thing done to the car over the summer. But, I am getting back at it now that things are slowing down for the winter. Here is a pic of it in the driveway next to my race car. My drag car is a replica of Dick Landy's 68 Coronet R/T that was campained by Mike Landy back in the day.

Why no frame connectors, i know it is going to be a clone but it wouldnt hurt to have a set of car tool frame connectors in it, anyway is a clone. just my opinion, eather way is a bad ass car and i love the way you paint it underneath and leave it shiney with no undercoating i wont put undercoating in my car eather and will paint underneath as well the same body color.

In 1968 the base Coronet and the Deluxe model were post cars as well as the Super Bee. The 440 models could be post or hard top. The 500 and R/T were hard tops.
I will start another thread later for more pics of my race car.

I didn't bother with frame connectors on this car since it is a clone, and will not get abused. not too much anyway. and,I have my race car with frame connectors too settle any urges for hard accelerations
I will be putting under coat in the wheel wells the same way the factory did. But I will leave the under side shiney paint.

I got my ralley dash and bucket seats from a very rusty 68 Charger parts car. The dash is rusty around the vin number. But thats okay, because I am drilling out the spot welds for the top pan of the dash and replacing it with my original top pan. This way I also get to keep my cars original vin number intact with the factory rivets.

I used a small tip paint pen from Michaels arts and crafts. To keep it from running out and smudging, I kept wiping the tip of the pen on paper towel and just lightly dabbing the letters. I put the first coat on light, let it dry, then lightly put more coats on till it covered.

Bare Metal Foil was designed for detailing model cars. You can order it online or pick it up at some hobby stores that sell model cars. Here is a link to their web site.

Hi Bryan, I'm glad you found your 1970 and left the 1968 for me. Your project is looking very nice by the way.
I am changing the interior from white bench to black buckets and console. The white interior will be going in one of my 69 Coronet projects.
Is this Mike's second Challenger? I thought he had a red 2008 on order when I bought the Coronet.

If you happen to come over to the Island anytime, let me know, I'll give you a tour through the garage.

I didn't get near as much done to the car over the winter as I had planed. Too much snow removal that had to get done and then I ended up having hernia surgery as well.
I got the dash mostly back together. I still need to replace the glove box door with the proper one for a rallye dash.

Of the 100's of pics I have of my race car. I only found a couple pics on this computer. The rest I have are all taken with my old 35mm camera or by track photographers. I will have to get my son to show me how to scan them onto the computer some day.

Here is a pic taken in early 2003 while the car was still being built.

I made a few changes to the car over the last eight years. It started out with a 383 and a 8.75 rear end, and a ramcharger hood. It now has a 440 sixpack, dana 60, and a lift off hood. It use to run low 13's but now runs mid 11's.

one last pic for now.

OH CRAP! Started to work on the hood last night. This power bulge hood is one that came with the car when I bought it. I hadn't paid any attention to it until now. Looks like it went through a severe hail storm. I did have hopes of getting this car painted in the next month too. Now I got to go looking for another hood.

The S&M car is one that a friend and I built in 2004 just after we finished the Landy car. Originally I owned both cars and he owned the drive train that was in the S&M car. He later bought the S&M car from me, but he keeps it stored at my place.

He started out with a 383 but it now has a 499 ci stroker in it. His best et so far is in the 10.40's. He just purchased bigger heads and cam for it last week. Plus he will be swapping out the front drum brakes for disc's.

The car is one of those little old lady cars that was found in a barn with 68k miles on it. It was originally a 1968 Satellite with a 273ci.

Why scrap the hood? A friend bought a shrinking disk and used it on the roof of his 63 Fairlane. Quickly and easily took the dents out as well as the oil canning. He's very accomplished/experienced at bodywork. You could easily have that hood flat in a day.

Thanks for the tip on the shrinking disc. I do plan on trying to save this hood whether I end up finding a better one or not. It's just a matter of finding the time and hope that I have enough skill to do it well.

Thanks for the kind words. A4 is the code used for the 1969 silver, in 1968 the code was just A. I'm not sure if there is much difference between the two years, but I did ask them to mix up the 68 color.

Forgive me... How dare I imply that one would actually use a '69 paint code on a '68 car!

Either way, your car looks great... Can't wait to see it done...

Re: 1968 Coronet.....getting a make over. - 06/08/11 05:21 PM

Not much progress since my last post. Although I did receive alot of new parts for the Hemi. New Chromedome air cleaner which has been discontinued (Tony's Parts still had some in stock). New black wrinkle valve covers that are on nation wide back order (found on ebay). New exhaust manifolds, motor mounts, pulleys, and of course a hassle free dual quad induction system with calibrated edelbrock carbs from Mancini.

My delimma now is that I am having second thoughts about leaving it automatic. I already have alot of the 4spd parts needed. I'm just not sure my poor knees will tolerate it as I get older.

I still havn't found a better hood yet either which is holding up the progress on painting.

I had a friend get Paintless Dent Removal done on his Grand Cherokee this weekend while we watched. It was an amazing process and when completed you couldn't tell there had ever been any dents in it at all!

He did it on the side for $150 for 5 very large dents!

Go with the stick and enjoy it as long as you can then switch it back it needed! Thats my plan w/my bad knees!!!!!!!! But they'll need to get really BAD before that happens!!!! lol!

Finally started back at the project this past week after an 8 month break. I had no luck in finding a better hood, so I decided it's time to repair the one I have.

Along with the hail damage, the glue between the two layers had also let go. Plus it had two of the welded nuts broke off inside the hood. Plus it had surface rust and a mouse nest inside that I just couldn't seem to completely get rid of.

The only way to really take care of all these issues was to drill out the spot welds and get inside.

Once I had the inner structure out of the way, I went at it with the hammer & dolly. Also had help from a friend of a friend that does paintless dent repair.

Wow...the project is very impressive. I love those tribute cars. I've always wanted to do a 68 Landy Coronet myself. I love it. Nice job!!
Thanks for posting the pictures. It gives the rest of us a shot in the arm to get going on our own projects.I love what you did with the buldge hood. Looks nice after you put it back together. Not too many guys I know would have made that kind of repair.But...with the good parts hard to find, we have to fix what we have nowadays.

It's been a long time coming, but I finally applied paint to the outside of the car. I was warned that silver is not an easy color to spray, and after the second coat of base went on (zebra striped) I was ready to hurl the paint gun across the room and go buy some black paint instead. But after going for a drive to calm down, and then switching back to my old cheap reliable siphon feed gun for the third coat of base, I couldn't be happier with the results.

Wow Travis, the car looks great. Can't wait to see it in person, it's hard to believe its the green one!

We hope to make it over to the island this summer for a show.... any suggestions? I hear there's a good one on the July 7th weekend, just can't remember the details....

that looks awsome!

good job on the decision to go "old School" mid shoot. I guess it just takes more time behind the gun to get the hang of a difficult color out of the unfamiliar tool.

The PEI Street Rod Association is hosting a small show & shine at the Old Brudenell Park on that weekend. My favorite show is definitely The Atlantic Nationals in Moncton N.B on the following weekend.

Thanks Bryan, that would be great.

I installed the vinyl top last weekend with help from a friend. It turned out pretty good for the first one that either one of us had ever done. Also put the head liner in this week as well.

I have a collection of different rims. So multiple combinations are possible. It will just depend on the occasion or mood I'm in as to what it will have on any given day.

#1. Body color steel wheels/red lines/dog dish caps.
#2. S/S Cragers/fat tires
#3. Keystone Classics/fat tires.
#4. 15x8 steel wheels/fat tires.

None on the car, bought a Harley the 1st of May and been busy renovating the house to make it much more energy efficient. Now adding another bay onto my garage. Plan to get back at the car this winter and hope to have it on the road for next summer.
