70 Challenger RT 383 - 12/06/10 11:24 AM

Thought I'd share a pic of my 70 RT Challenger. Eight years now and getting close to completion. Converted from left to right hand drive (bit off way more than I could chew with that)was 383 now mild 440. Runs, drives, steers and stops. Nearly there.

Let's see the dash conversion to right hand drive.

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 12/07/10 12:01 AM

The dash was cut into 23 pieces before being welded back together and a new crash pad was made from fibreglass. It has a Rally Dash so the instrument cluster didn't have to be touched.

I considered an Aussie Charger dash as they bolt right up but leave a 1.5" gap at either end. Will post pics tonight.

Thats freaky man. Did chrysler really make a right hand drive e-body?

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 12/29/10 10:21 PM

No factory right hand drive cars that I know of although I have heard of a couple of cars that were dealer converted back in the day. I beleive they were B & C body cars.

Looking very nice Andy. I'm in Darwin & have a 73 Barracuda the same colour I think (FY1?) Will be sweet when finished. The rims set it off too. For me its either them or original. Will follow your post with interest. Where did you get the rocker covers? Do they have them for the 340?

Hi Bill, Nice Plymouth.
I got the rocker covers from 440 Source $149 US from memory. I have seen them for small blocks but I dont know who sells them here in Aus.

Cheers

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 07/26/12 02:52 AM

Wow! You've done a lot of nice work on that car. One question, and I'm just asking because I've never thought of it before and like to learn. Does Australia make you guys convert cars to right hand drive in order to be able to drive them on the roads? Even if they don't, I would imagine that it would be awkward driving a left hand drive car if you've been used to right hand drive cars all your life. I know it would be hard for me to switch to right hand drive after driving left hand cars since 1973....lol. Keep up the good work!

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 07/26/12 03:26 AM

Hi, you can register left hand drive cars in Australia provided they are over 30 years old. My buddy has a 68 Charger that is still left hand drive and you're right, it's difficult to adjust when you've been driving right hand drive cars your whole life. It's also kinda hard when you go to a drive thru restraunt by yourself.

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 07/27/12 02:48 AM

It'd be easier to just convert the country to left hand drive.

Re: 70 Challenger RT 383 - 08/01/12 04:17 AM

I would like to know more on how you did this. Would have been a great write up. I do this for usdm cars, but have the jdm parts to do the convert. In for info.

Beautiful Challenger, the color really gleams.
Since Mopars have the engine/transmission shifted to the right side of the car, do you guys shift it to the left when converting to right hand drive?
