Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 11/15/10 05:01 AM

Hello all! Finally had some time to get my project posted up on moparts for all to see. I admit, I started the car a little over a year ago so I do have some stuff done already so bare with me..

First off: My name is Kevin Link. I am currently 20 years old, I work with my dad on our family dairy farm and work a second job as a tractor mechanic at our local McCormick tractor dealership. I became a mopar fanatic when my dad bought his T/A challenger when I was 8. My dad and I restored our first car together (70 real triple black charger r/t) when I was 11, and we've since done 6 restorations. I have a wonderful girlfriend that I should point out whos been with me through thick and thin

The car: The car is a 1971 Roadrunner 340 automatic car. originaly GW3 bright white with a gold bench interior. came with rr decore group, a/c, hood pins, 150 speedo, single chrome mirror and 14" rally wheels. car came from wyoming so is relativly rust free! Unfortunatly, as I kind of peiced together, the original motor got froze up so that is long gone..

Plans for the car: I dont plan to stray too far from the fender tag. I plan to keep it simple with the only aditions I plan to make externally is duel painted mirrors, front and rear spoilers and exhaust tips. As for the interior, I am going with buckets with a buddy seat, 15" rallys, factory tach and 6 way seat. I figure that all of this should be relativly easy to turn back if I ever wanted to. One more thing I should point out is that I also plan on building a FAST legal 340 for it but that wont be comming into the picture for a wee bit.

I dont really have a time line to get the car done, but as impatient as I am, Im hopeing it will be done in the spring sometime. I will do my best to keep current pictures up, so please sit back and enjoy. also, please dont be afraid to critique! Thanks
-kevin

in the mean time, Im buying some parts. When I got the car, it had a pair of 390 date coded rallys in the front and 15x8 in the rear. I was lucky enough and found another pair of 1971 dated 390 rallys from a fellow moparts member!

spare tire. I know it isn't the correct 450 wheel but I didn't see the point in spending big bucks for a spare haha. tire is a 1972 dated polyglas I scored on craigslist also for $50 shipped!

had my rally dash restored by auto instruments. If anyones read some of my previous posts, I didn't have very good luck with them. Needless to say, I need to send out my roadrunner emblem again. I wont go into details of the story, but the end results aren't too bad.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 11/15/10 05:46 AM

Also through this, Im trien to give credit where credit is due. Ill try and keep a running tally of money spent as Ive kept all of my reciepts. So far, including purchas price, I have roughly $17,000 into the car (many parts purchased from Mega parts, ECS, Legendary)

There are a ton more of pictures but thus far, its taken me all night, but you can get an idea of where Im heading with this. Im trien to be as correct as I possibly can on a budged (sounds insane in retrospect) As of now, the car is sitting waiting for paint. My goal is to get everything ready to bolt on when the car comes back (last I was told, should be March) I also want to point out that even though dad helped on restorations in the past, Im doing %100 of the work myself unless specified (IE paint and upolstry) Let me know what you think. thanks!

I also have to realise that the car isn't going to be extreamly competative in the FAST class, but I always loved the thought of looking perfectly stock and blowing the doors off unsuspecting cars

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 11/17/10 08:34 PM

Awesome car ...

You will have a lot of fun with the f.a.s.t. class ..

I am no expert yet , but I am plagued by a lot of weight on my car a 71 GTX fast car ..

Take advantage of litening up the car now , the heater box is Mint , but it adds weight.
I see the six way seat . etc. Id be thinking about ANY way to liten up the front of the car ..
If you want to Run real fast..
, if you just want to run respectable times and have fun , leave it "as IS"- But IF you get the "bug" youll eventually be pulling all that pretty stuff out . It Is a HEVVY car

Im assuming youll stroke the pee out of the 340
and beat up some big blocks with it.

Did that car come from NC , looks like I looked at that one before .

Good Luck , look forward to seeing your progress on it .

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 11/18/10 12:15 AM

yes, I have a 416 in the works. my tenative plan is to use a rebuilt 340 I have sitting in the shop now and enjoy the car for next summer and next winter after building my funds back, pull the motor and build my FAST legal motor. I only plan on running respectable times probably not be too competative as I know that a 71 b-body with a small block (and a/c to boot) isn't going to kick too much butt. idealy if I could run it in the 12's Id be very satisfied. This car supposibly came from wyoming and I bought the car from a moparts member in minnesota (it was listed on this site for a little while too)

few more picstures.. here is my jack assemby cleaned up and painted the correct colors. I guess there were some jacks that had grey bases and lifts and some were black, mine were with out a doubt black. I sill need to put the caution stiker on the base, but it didn't turn out too shabby.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 11/21/10 03:32 AM

head light assemblys. when I bought the car, John (the previous owner) did an awsome job of rounding up MANY extra parts! I have several sets of these and they all cleaned up to be a somewhat glossy black. I even had a set of beautiful galvinized head light buckets! I assume the paint blobs are for positioning? I was going to do some reaserch and try to mimic this, anyone have any info? I polished up the rings too. I also have a pair of the plastic 'black outs' all cleaned up too but forgot to get a picture.

another view. I got a really close match for the black on the vin and painted that. I tried to put one of ECS's dry transfers on but I botched it haha, so I have to get another one..

also, since my dash pad was toast, I have a recoverd dash pad comming from Superior dash pads out of payne OH. I heard some really good reveiws about them from some pretty reputable shops and figured Id give them a try. they were pretty reasonably priced compared to just dashes or u/r

thank you for all of the positive comments! It isn't going to be on the scale of the Barrelcuda or Dave's valiant, but I want it to be as accurate as possible so please critique!! haha. The body got the engine bay and jams all media blasted last week and returned to the body shop this week. next we're re-hanging the sheet metal for alighnment and go to town on getting it into paint. soon after deer hunting is done, im going to tackle the rest of my steering column and start pecking away at my dash.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 12/09/10 10:29 PM

I got some more picture updates on the way, just need to get them resized. I ended up getting a different drivers side fender for the car. at some point in the roadrunners life, it had a little fender bender and when they fixed it, they took a 72 fender and brazed on a 71 side marker light. I was able to get another 71 fender, but it wasn't anything to brag about and needed a lot of work. as luck would have it, I tracked down yet another drivers fender that was VERY nice for $300. Ill get some pictures up in the next day or 2.

got some more pics. first up in the rear bumper I unwraped and snapped a few pic of. I still need the tail light lenses who Ill get from Mike Ross. the galvinizing on the lisence plate frame was very nice also. I just took apart the spring hinge and cleand up some of the bare metal hardware.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 12/12/10 06:33 AM

I am pretty happy with how the filler neck turned out. mine was pretty rusty so I cleaned it up good and used 40/ 60 tin/ lead soldering and covered the whole thing. it looks pretty stinkin close to my 40,000 original mile duster (maybe a little shineier) and it is plenty soft enough to put your finger nail into it like original. I figured this would be a better alternative to painting it

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 12/12/10 06:37 AM

I threw together my dash frame for looks. I still have to get my dash pad and an ash tray re-dyed to match. I also redid the wood grain on the a/c strip to match a very nice original one I had. auto instruments just painted it brown... I also sent out my roadrunner dash emblem, and heater control to instrument specialties to get redone.

for some reason, my camera is giving everything a wierd red flash. it seriously looks a lot better in person...

Yea, depends on the SPD of when your car was built. Dont recall if you stated it in a previous post. Dont have when they changed them right off hand right now. Anyway, great looking car. Keep up the good work.

Again... great job...

Looking good Kevin. Who are you using for your paint/body? I agree with you about the seats. If you had an upholstery shop do them for you, I would take them back and have them tighten them up. Otherwise, if you need a name of someone, let me know. They look pretty "sacky" and they will only get more loose once you start sitting in them.

I am having a guy by the name of mitch lafferty paint it (use to work at the resto shot El cars in cameron) I did have a sit down with him and expressed my disscouragment and he told me it will be ready for paint by the end of the week I did also have the seats done in an upolstery shop in Eau claire. If anything, Ill see how they work out this summer and take them back in the winter if they havn't gotten any better.

I would keep it pump gas by all means, is all I mean .. Unless you want to have a car like mine that you cant drive to a cruise night .. I think that you will see that a lot of the FAST cars may be starting to be more competitive with hovering around 12-11:50 ,

and then the guys with multiple cars can do what they want ..

I blew up my driver car at the end of summer and now Im bummin. Im looking at a 4200 # boat anchor that I insure
and shouldnt really drive more than 5 miles AND spend time looking for race fuel .

BE creative and lighten the car to go faster ..

But its still nice to drive a sweet showcar around - and tell everyone it runs 11.90 ..
Youll have fun either way , good luck keep us posted

oofta, ive been neglecting to post updates. Ill have to take more pics this weekend. I've got the rear pretty much all together, ready to bolt under the car and starting to put the firewall together. also, my front suspension is half rebuilt. the bottom side is pretty much done and in a little over a month or so Ill be going to pick up my motor as of lately, Ive been painting tractors on my weekends to to raise money. painted an IH 1026, 1066, 806, 1466 and a case 400 all within 5 weeks haha so time to work on the car is slowed down. still shooting to have it done for mopars in the park in farmington MN. although its probably hopelessly optamistic. doesn't hurt though right?

also for my dash, I used Jackson speaker service to restore my original speaker. turned out awesome and the price can't be beat. the radio is near perfect I won off of ebay for $10. the variable wiper switch is an NOS one I got off of ebay along with an NOS light switch. never had a lot of luck with useing old switches. everything else is original, cleaned up. very happy with how it turned out.

also forgot to mention, I got my 4973 carb sent out to Scott Smith for a resto. sent out a bunch of stuff to Jules the wiperman also. a few weeks to go before I go to pick up my motor from Jeff Patterson. I want to get the rear end under the car by the weekend. progress is moving slowly but surely.

ya, I would love to hire out. hit me up if your interested. for my motor, I hired Jeff Patterson to build be a fast legal 426 small block. he sort of wants me to keep some of the stuff between him and I, so Ill respect that. should be a pretty sweet set up though.

just go to www.megapartsusa.com they dont nessisarily list all of the harnesses on their site, so its almost better to call. my harness was just plug right in and go, no splicing, cutting or crimping. VERY pleased with the fit of it. I looked up what I payed and it was $504 opposed to YO $560. not a huge difference in price, but anything helps and in past experiance, anyway to not deal with YO is a plus for me.

I did get more done this weekend. I got the rear brakes almost all together and I think the moment to roll the rear under the car is almost here

kind of piddley, work, but I got the drums painted. I mixed my own colors using IH red and Case power red going by other pics on the computer, I think its pretty close. dont mind the incorrect lug nuts, haven't gotten them yet.

goals for this next week:
-mount drivers door
-install gull wing
-restore/ polish trim
-install rear bumper and valance

portly? common, 71 b-bodies are slim, sleek cars If I were to be in the low 12's, Id be more than satisfied.

the dash is one I picked up at a swap meet and put my original speedometer in. I had it restored at auto instruments. I wasn't very happy with their customer service at all.. work was ok. the emblem and heater control was done at instrument specialties and the pad is from superior dash pads. the dash pad fits ok, not great. the gap between the speaker tray and the pad is pretty wide, I can post a picture tonight.

steering stuff together. I put earlier that I had firm feel rebuild my original box to stage 3 specs. I went pretty thin on paint for the box as well as the supplier to chrysler always had it pretty thin.. all the bare metal parts are unpainted, but treated with ECS's RPM. works very well imo. the ball joints are all spicer bought from Bill Rolik

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 05/29/12 03:12 AM

last one for now. my pride and joy for MANY COUNTLESS HOURS!! as some of you know, 71 roadrunner grills had natural black plastic for the black-out area. I obviously couldn't have it any other way so I hunted for a long time for a suitable true roadrunner/ gtx grill. I found one on ebay and bought it come to find out it had been spray bombed black (after I had asked if it was with an answer of NO) I decided to keep it and mess around with it. after several attempts to chemically strip the paint with easy off oven cleaner, it didn't make it any better. I then got walnut media for my blast cabinet and very lightly (60 psi) blasted the grill. after if was paint free, I used light steel wool to get a more natural look and I think it turned out great. it would have certainly been easier to paint it black again lol. the silver I used a krylon nickle shimmer metallic that I think looks pretty close to some original grills Ive seem. the bumper is chromed by AMS who did and awesome job (some sticker still stuck to the top..)

Ive been trying to upload pictures onto my home computer, but I think I might have a virus, its not letting me.. Ive had to push back the dyno until this friday due to my pertronix not coming. I am all set to go now though. Ill keep working on the computer problem also!

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 07/31/12 06:10 PM

well got the FAST motor dynoed on friday and Jeff hit his mark and then some my best pull with headers was 512 hp and 539 ft lbs of torque! Ill have to scan the dyno sheets when I have an opportunity. the manifolds weren't quite as impressive, but what do you expect. I dont remember the numbers for those off the top of my head.

also, still waiting to get my computer fixed. the house we were renting sold so I am in the process of moving and thats consuming my time in the last week.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 08/02/12 09:55 PM

Wow Kevin those are some stout numbers! Was that dyno pull run with headers? Which intake? Heads. Compression, Cam, Carb with or W/O a choke? etc.? Love to hear some details
Posted By: Rapid340

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 08/03/12 04:26 AM

I did the motor and it was a lot of fun doing something like this for what may be the heaviest of muscle car era 340 cars (I was guessing close to 4000 lbs). The motor was built with more emphasis on mid/upper-mid torque than peak HP because of the application. I think Kevin will really be happy driving this car.

It is a pump gas (9.9:1 compression) FAST motor. The heads and intake are true 71 340 castings along with a 4973 71 thermoquad. The cam is a solid flat tappet (similar results could have been achieved with a hydraulic on this one but Kevin had a preference for a solid and he wanted a real noticeable idle).

He called me after the dyno session. The best numbers with headers(he didnt know size of the headers) were 515HP and 539 TQ. The B-body manifolds yielded 474 HP at 5800 RPM and 496 TQ at 4500 RPM. He ran the carb with the choke installed and he did not have any jets to lean out the carb with the manifolds. This along with two recommendations ( extra speed secrets) I gave him will bump it to 500HP and well over 500 ft-lbs with manifolds when he gets around to it. They ran 91 octane pump gas (didnt know what brand)

Note on manifolds: This was the first set of b-body manifolds I have ever ported. They are restrictive. I would describe the drive side as almost identical to the 71 A/B passenger side but with the dump in the rear rather than the center. Also the exits on both are 1 7/8 rather than 2 1/4 on the A pass side.

BTW after seeing some of the pics of the restoration in this thread I have to say I am pretty impressed. I believe Kevin is only 21 years old.

It's a '63 Dodge 440 Max Wedge clone. White w/ red stripe and interior. It should be pretty cool when done. We had bought a '62 Fury convertible from Buzz. He claimed it was a real MW and I tried to convince him it wasn't after I did alot of investigation into it. We bought it anyway because it was completely rust free and the engine in it was a '62 vintage 413 with high compression, real max wedge heads, a stage II intake and stage III carbs. We did the body and paint in our own shop and had all of the stainless restored. It was basically ready for assembly, but ultimately, we really wanted a hardtop. Long story short, we sold the Fury and bought the Dodge. We kept the engine out of the Fury to use in the Dodge, but we are having Jeff at Wheeler Racing Engines build a 440 using all of the MW stuff instead of the 413. Hope to have it done by next spring. If you know anyone that would like a nice 413 short block let me know;). Also, the GTX should be in the December issue of MCG.

So whats the "extra speed secrets"? Inquiring minds want to know. Motor seems like its making some damn good steam, I think thats about optimum cubic inch for this style motor. I think it should tickle the 11's no problem.

On a side note, how's your motor Jeff? No pm, no call...

Brian, when I'm running .26 second faster than you I will let you know. The way you've got that car launching I would'nt hold my breath.

I think 11's are going to be really tough with Kevins car on polyglass. Did you notice the power steering box? Also, he is going to be running 3:55's.

I havent had much time to work on my own stuff and when I did get some time it was 100 degrees and 90% humidity in my garage. I had the car out on my local side roads for the first time this year only a week ago. Seems to be running OK. I'm hoping to break it in at the Nationals this week.

Hopefully you can beat up on me (I mean meet up with me) at one of the events this year.

I might just bring my camera to my job and upload here. as far as hitting the 11's, I would be thrilled. I tried like heck last night to get pictures uploaded onto my grandmas computer with no success. after an hour, I finally got them onto the computer then when it came to resize them, it wouldn't let me after many attempts. where the car stands now is it has the motor in it and for the most part everything is hooked up and the motor turns over (havn't really tried to start it yet) I have a few electrical bugs to work out and hopefully this weekend, the front clip and glass will go in. after that, interior. Im obtamistic it wont take long from this point. I have a lot of pictures to share once I get a chance to get them up.

date coded alternator rebuilt by a local shop. I did run the reproduction date coded belts for a little while, but while idling it once, they flipped over and got ruined. now they are gates. I guess after reading up on them, its probably for the best. also running the carter high volume fuel pump

drivers side. I got a date coded power steering cooler. originally it didn't have one, but I opted for one being I went with the 3.55 sure grip. green top group 24 battery was from a moparts member who I feel terrible I cant remember off the top of my head. had AWESOME service though. its correct per my build sheet.

and finally, the dyno sheets! his spelling isn't exactly perfect.. first sheet is with the manifolds. Jeff and I talked about a few things I can do differently to bump the hp level to over 500 hp.

best pull made with the dyno headers. basically the only change between the first sheet and this one. thats it for now.

I backed it out of the shop and the tranny slips like none other Im taking it back out and to the shop that rebuilt it. otherwise, I put in my ECS dated coded windshield the other day and just sent out a bunch of my a/c stuff to classic auto air for restore. I bought a NOS pump also for my car. the one in the pics is just a donar to fill the void. I also bought a new condensor/ dryer and expansion valve off of a ebay member thats suppose to be correct. still havn't gotten it yet though.

Fuuuudge

I hate bashin people , but jn this case i will .
Had Fireball tranny in Canada build me a
Tranny . First time around used the wrong
Clutches with an aluminum drum , drum toasted .
And tranny leaked like a sieve ..
aND Found a crack in the case after hours of
Strainful checking .. Sent him pics

He DID rebuild the tranny . Never thought to look
At the case ... He used the SAME one ..

Had DaVe D hook me up with Godfather
Racing , i have a correct killer tranny now ...

Are you sure you have to pull it ,
Did you start it in neutral to get all the juices
Flowin ?

All the linkage right etc etc . That's odd
That a new tranny slips .
I dont know much about the valve bodies
And passages and all that , but check and double check
Before yankin it . Deep pan ? No filter extension extension ?

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 01/06/13 05:23 AM

I talked to a different tranny shop and im taking the whole car there on either monday or tuesday. he said it might be something as simple as a band adjustment. my tranny is a 904 cheetah fwd valve body, semi rigid band, deep pan with filter extension and a dynamic 9.5" converter. not sure on the clutch packs or drum. its times like this I really wish I knew transmissions better

also, when the rear was up on jack stands, it would roll and shift through all the gears. none of the fluid smells burnt either. it does howl (sound like a brake dragging) when the car is on the ground and giving it throttle in gear.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 01/07/13 02:00 AM

I had the tranny in my 71-GTX rebuilt right after I bought it in 98. Put it in myself. All seemed to work OK, then it would just stop working and howled a little bit. In that time, the car has been in storage for the last 15 years. Finally took the car back out and it turns out that I didn't engage the torque converter all the way. Ruined the front pump. $600 later, it was fixed right.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 01/21/13 11:14 PM

Have a small update... I brought my roadrunner to the tranny shop 2 weeks ago due to major slippage. They told me they wanted to do some initial pressure checking and minor adjustments and if that didnt fix it, they would call me and let me know before tearin into it. Sounded good to me so gave them the go ahead. This morning got a call from them asking for my cam specs and i didn't know off hand so i gave them jeffs number. Call them back later and apparently they had the whole tranny out and figured my new dynamic converter was junk and wanted to order me a new converter. I called dynamic and they told me the symptoms didnt sound like a converter and more like leakage issues. Called tranny shop and asked if the pressure check and everything else was good and they told me theh never even checked it, just tore it down without runnin it... Kinda pissed i asked why they didnt, they told me it was because i told them it was slipping!! DUH!! Now im goin to go get it on friday done or not. Im almost scared to look at it...

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 01/27/13 01:57 AM

Update... I was too mad yesterday to post. Went to the shop again yesterday and talked to the owner who btw was drunk at 2 in the afternoon.. And asked how the roadrunner was going. Told me they couldnt find anything wrong but they replaced the clutch packs and bands which the clutches were slightly used and the band was brand new... Wouldnt even show me the old ones saying they were junk and threw them away. Then told me he was ready to order me a new converter because my dynamic was junk and had too much stall at 3500 and my motor isnt nearly big enough for that. He then proceded to tell me dynamic is run by a bunch of kids who dont know anything and that cheetah makes crappy valve bodies. Didnt help he had a drunk buddy there agreeing with everything. Also earlier i was told they didnt pressure check it and now hes telling me he did and it had good pressue so im getting 2 stories... This is going to be a night mare. Stay tuned
Posted By: mopars_1

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 01/27/13 02:01 AM

Btw, i asked him if he called dynamic and he said he didnt. Not sure how he knew the stall considering dynamic told me it would stall around 3-3200? And im pretty sure i never told him?

well, I had a buddy of mine that isn't exactly a tranny guy but knows his way around them enough, put it together as a favor. I would have taken it back to him, but he didn't have the time to get at it for a long while, and I dont want to take advantage of a favor from him. So I took it to this shop expecting it to be something simple like an adjustment or something of that nature, which Im sort of beleiving that was the case in the end. They lead me to beleive it was probably just a band issue or possibly valve body issues at worst and wouldn't take much to get it going being everything is new. Next time I get a tranny done, its either getting farmed out to a reputable place to start or Im going to be hitting the books and do it all myself.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 02/02/13 05:54 PM

Sail panel boards done. My original boards were in decent, straight shape, but the paper type covering was rough. I obviously didnt want to go with the incorrect headliner material and repops are crap. I got the idea to recover them in wall paper. Went to menards and found a plain white paper with a very soft, almost grainless texture that i thought looks close to factory. I used upholstery glue, glued it on and dyed them. Turned out a lot better than the alternative and it only cost 5 bucks. If anyone else wants to try this, i have a pile of wall paper you can have

Thats all for now, plan on getting more done asap. Mostly i have left is instal 1/4 windows and adjust, seats carpet door panels and a little tweaking here and there

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 02/25/13 05:53 AM

Few small updates. Got the a/c pretty much ready to go. Had my hoses restored at classic auto air. Turned out nice. Need a way to get rid of the 'parker' stamps on hoses. I bought a condensor, drier and sxpansion valve off ebay. Condensor is pretty close to original. Drier wasnt even close so i bought a nos one along with the switch..

Have my door panels ready to go. Only one is an original that didnt get chaulky. Otherwise the otheres were perfect brown ones. I dyed them all with Herbs interior dye and they turned out great. The arm rests are original the had to be repaired. All of them turned out great. Thats it for now, sort of stalled out until i can talk my dad into doing more trim polishing.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 02/25/13 06:06 AM

things left to do:

install 1/4 windows and adjust
put together a/c and charge
carpet seats and door panels
windshield trim
buy/ install wheel well trim
front end alignment

Im sure there are other small things, but thats the bulk of it.

Good job Kevin! I have to work the weekend of the show, but wish I could have seen your car. If you are able, you should drive to Cumberland this weekend. Our dealership is having it's second classic car cruise-in from 9-2. Nothing too exciting, but it's an excuse to get the car out and something to do. They are having dogs & brats from Louie's and some other things.

I knew it was going to well! Stumbled on a small electrical issue. Nothing major right now, but my blinkers for the right side wont work when the headlights are on and the left front wont work At all. I havnt had time yet to track anything but i suspect a ground issue.. At least thats what im hoping and that its not the switch. Really would like to avoid tearing the steering column apart. With my luck, id break the rim blow center cap... At least this wont hamper my taking it to mopars in the park..

Well, she made it out to the Mopars in the Park! got to see a lot of members and bs a bit when I pulled into the show and parked on saturday, Rob Wolff was right behind me and asked to do a photo shoot and do an article on my car! that was pretty neat. also had 2 pretty serious offers to buy the car (not listed even?) so that was flattering as well. for being a plane jane looking roadrunner, I was surprised at the attention it got.. Also pissed me off, someone stole one of my valve stem extensions... Had a great time though!!

WOW!!! Your Road Runner is stunning. Love the GW3 Bright White. Im glad collectors guide is doing an article on your car. It deserves it.Great combo with the white body, no vinyl top or over the roof stripe with the gold bench seat interior and a 340 with air. Glad to see a great 71 Road Runner get an over the top resto done to it. Are you planning on taking it to The Mopar Nats this year? Hope you do so I can check it out!

That's great, proves that your hard work paid off. Sorry about the thief! I have a couple of original extensions. Not perfect, but if you need one, it will fill the bill. Let me know and I'll get one out to you ASAP.

Congrats Kevin! It turned out great. I wish I was going to be at the dealership this weekend for your dad's A100. Dean is a great guy and a good customer of ours. He & his wife bought a pink SRT8 Challenger from us and his son just bought a new Charger R/T a few months ago. BTW, if you see anyone selling any brand new Ram 20" wheels & tires, alert the police. Someone jacked up one of our trucks and got away with three of them on Wed. night. I think Rice Lake got hit too.

I will defiantly keep a look out. thieves are the absolute worst!! I have no clue why my dad bought a van! very out of our norm! I promise Ill bring the rr up there and visit in the near future, we'll keep in touch! as far as the FAST in michigan, Id love to go, but thats next weekend correct? I have to work next weekend, and a guy from the other shift quit, so Ill have to pick up some of his slack to boot. I will go if I can! Theres soo much I want to get done this summer, its ridiculous. the car should be making a visit to our local track in the near future also!

WOW! All I can say is WOW!!

You did a hell of a lot better resto on the RR than I could have. I wasn't able to get to Mopars in the Park this year to see it

It looks absolutely fantastic my friend- I'm glad that it went to someone who could really appreciate it and get it back to where it belongs.

Thanks for keeping me posted along the way Kevin

John

P.S. Any progress on the 70 Challenger RT/SE that I sold to your Dad?

I was planning on the nats, but my dad talked me into going to sturgis this year for the bike rally (same weekend). I am checking into and will be making plans on going to Norwalk for the fall ball deal in early September. The nats will be next year, my goal is to make 1 major mopar show a year other than mopars in the park in MN.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 02/10/14 03:10 AM

as Im sure most of you have seen, I've been trying to sell my roadrunner for the last few months. Last Thursday I had someone commit to buying her and sent a down payment. In 3 weeks I'll be hauling it down to it's new home in Ohio. This has been a bitter sweet adventure and I don't think it has really set in quite yet.

On a different note, I kept the FAST 340 and replaced it with a nice stock 340. My stroker motor will reside in my new project that I just picked up yesterday Just got home from a trim to Missouri with a 71 340 duster that needs a lot of tlc, but when done it will be a phenomenal car!! originally it was equipped with nearly ever option I would have checked off when new including hemi orange, V24 blacked out hood, black vinyl top/ stripes, orange bucket seats w/ console, 3.91 gear, exhaust tips and rocker/ wheel well trim. other than a 4 speed, this is my dream car. My dad just pulled his 70 V code roadrunner in the shop to restore (my old car) so after its done, the duster will get a resurrection that I hope will be even better than the roadrunner.

Again, thanks to all who have gave me advise, encouragement and compliments through this journey. It's amazing what a person can do when you put your mind to something and I'm in every bit proud of what I have accomplished.

Re: Young Gun 1971 Roadrunner FAST 340 - 02/19/14 05:42 PM

Man this car sure turned out really nice! It was nice to see a color that was different that the traditional high impact colors be restored. I actually kind of like the white and gold now because of this car. I can't wait to see what you do with your duster as I have a '71 I am going to be working on pretty quickly here! Very well done resto, you have lots to be proud of! Good for you for sticking with the 340, most everyone yanks them for a big block but they can still roll with the best of them.
