Dad's 68' GTX Convertible

Dad's 68' GTX Convertible - 10/20/10 02:57 AM

What started out as a vibration at higher RPM's has turned into a restoration. Well sort of. After messing around with the transmission (read: taking it in and out at least 6 times last summer) now we looked at the motor. The motor is rebuilt, we just have to put it all back together. It is a different 440 bored out and compression right under 10:1 with rebuilt 915 heads.
Well as you can see in the picture, the guy that painted it back in the 80's did a terrible job, paint was flaking off just from over the years and the exterior of the car was filled with solvent pop (i think thats what it is called), then an accident involving a baseball, our garage and a broken window scratched the paint in the back a little bit, and on top of that a guy that was putting on the convertible top a few years back took out big chunks on top of the quarter panel. All the interior is redone, now its just fix the trunk floor and redo body work and paint it the correct QQ1. It was a dark metallic blue from Imron.
Here's the pictures of the progress so far.
By the way, this is his first car and is a 440 4 speed with a dana.

Airplane paint remover... lots of it.

We're trying to get this all back together for a fathers day mopar car show .

Photos aren't the best, but show a little work. Should have engine all together and hopefully everything buttoned up tomorrow Test it on Saturday.

You said it was a "different" 440...Did it come from an automatic? If so, the crank will need a pilot bushing for the input shaft of the trans...That may have been the cause if your vibration? I had this happen years ago, learned the hard way! BTW, nice car! I also had a yellow '68 'bee............

looks great! but hide the orange box on the front bumper bracket! paint the box black! run the wires across the fuel hose and up to dist! that way that ugly control box is hidden! dan

Forgot about this.
We got it all redone, but there is still a slight vibration (the reason for redoing a new motor). But this one is a lot faster!
Here are some pics that a member took of my dads car up at monster mopar in indianapolis. I drove my car there and back and dad trailered his there and back but drove it around up there. We both somehow pulled out a 3rd place trophy in our separate classes(68-70 b body dodge/ 68-70 b body plymouth)!

Next he is looking at getting a pair of bumpers he has rechromed that have the holes for the front and rear bumperettes that came with his car.
But here are the pics:
