All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR GTX

All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR GTX - 03/20/10 04:20 PM

And I never knew it,till last weekend. When I get a call from my buddy "What is the code for 440 4 bbl?" and I reply with "U why?" Dan says "There is a 72 Road Runner over here with a power sunroof and U is the engine code" Holy crap!

So he is in front of my house calling me and it is pouring rain outside. I jump in the car and we go check it out. Sitting in a PUBLIC METERED LOT in front of a small repair shop is a primer gray/ green painted roof/where the primer is rubbed through B5 is showing. The car also has Sattelite side mouldings on it. So we get out in the rain and this is what I see.... Power sunroof, power windows,A/C,AM/FM cassette, hood pins, dual painted mirrors,Tach, rear window defogger, slap stick, hood mounted turn signals, power steering, power disc brakes and of course that U in the vin. The hood was popped so we snuck a peek and everything is as it should be under there. No aftermarket junk all over the place, looks like cap and wires are new. Oddly the car has no exhaust tips and only a 2 speed wiper motor? Also the car only has a tinted windshield? I always thought tinted glass came with A/C.

Monday finally comes and I visit the owner. "Hello Billy my name is Tom and I was wondering if you would consider selling the blue bird?" He is sitting in a car looking at a scanner, he wouldn't even look up. His reply "Nope I'm gonna fix it up one day and sell it at one of those fancy auctions" Now this car has a inspection sticker from 1980 on it. I say "So what is the differance if you take my money now or later at some point you are gonna sell it right?" I had brought a small pile of money with me he didn't want to even look at it. He did finally say "If someone were to make me a good offer I would consider letting it go now" So you must have a number in your head? He spits out a number and I say so that is what it will take and then he backs up and says "well I would have to think about it"

Then he loosens up and we start talking about the car and how he came to own such a car. He tells me in 1971 he got into a Texaco station as they were making all kinds of incentives for young guys who could turn a wrench. He tells me he is in business only a few months and the check book is overflowing. Within a short time he has over 9,000 bucks in the bank. So he goes down to the local Plymouth dealer and sits down with the salesman and takes his pen out and draws a line through all the options. The salesman says "You want a stripper huh?" and he responds with "Nope I want it all" He ordered it in January and it was delivered to the dealer on the 29th of March. Billy took delivery on Aprils fools day. In the meantime he had learned that Texaco had made a mistake and hadn't billed him for a 4,500 load of fuel. OOPS

Billy didn't opt for any wheels or tires so this Road Runner was delivered with 14x5.5 black steel wheels with WHITEWALL F-70s. He said after he ordered the car the salesman took him in the back room and sold him a set of mags. Not long after he got the car he took it back to the dealer to have the Sattelite side moulding put on and the bottom of the car was painted silver.

Long story short it's in the garage now and I found the window sticker on the passenger floor under a pile of trash. All the cars paperwork was in the glovebox along with the sunroof instructions and the Chrysler litter bag. The broadcast sheet was behind the rear seat and it's in perfect condition.

Up until two years ago this car sat in his shop.So for 28 years it sat in the shop completly dormant. The employees cheered when it went up on the rollback. They were taking pictures with their phones and sending them to former employees as proof it was leaving.

Years ago he hired a kid that was in tech school to paint the car. The kid would come in at 3 and they would close at 5. So the kid would come in take the car apart and sand on it for 2 hours then they would blow primer on it. I guess that didn't work out too good. For some reason they painted the roof green (found some pipe products in the glove box too) If not for that bright idea it might not have gone unnoticed all these years. I mean if it was sitting out there in the middle of town in its original paint with cartoon birds all over the place how long would it take?

You never know what a day will bring.

Cool story and a great score. It kind of reminds me of when I ordered my 86 D150 pickup. I got the owner of the dealership in the little room and told him I wanted to order a pickup, I wanted it black on the outside, red on the inside and every option on the list.

Pictures are coming Andy. I spent all day with Bluebird. Cleaned out the gas tank, replaced 8 plugs, dialed in the carb, wiped all the overspray off the glass, played with the windows and sunroof, and filled the dumpster with trash. Pretty productive day,now it runs like a top. Radio,defog,roof,A/C and the windows all seem to work

Re: All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR GTX - 03/22/10 09:21 PM

There was one that looked just like that sitting around here outside next to a shed for years.
I drove by it 2 or 3 times a week for close to 10yrs, but never stopped because I wasn't really interested in that Gen RR.
Finally about 4yrs ago I decided to stop just for the heck of it... and it was gone.

Oh well... who knows what happened to that one, but it was getting pretty rusty and full of tree branches

No it wasnt a factory car but was installed right after buying it. Its a 69 A-12 intake and carbs that the guy bought off a wrecked car at a junkyard in detroit.

I sold the car and kept the intake.

Thats a heck of a car. Pretty wild thinking its been that close to you for that amount of time.

Was there blue paint on the harness hold down on the inner fender?

Any plans running through your head with what your going to do with it?

Re: All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR GTX - 03/23/10 01:39 AM

Wow
I thought it was gonna be a typical terd from my first couple minutes of conversation with you , Now I understand.. It is no terd
If that car was from NY it would have been worth what I stated , because it would have been a rust bucket. I always wished I grew up in PA instead of NY .. Dam... Any NY car Ive ever found always needs trunk extension, floors, etc. etc .

Who cares what it cost , that car will be in a magazine when and if you restore it, it is LOADED .. It qualifies for a page in MCG as it sits .

I cant imagine this being a candidate for a FAST car . It will be the coolest cruiser ever.
But I guess it wouldnt take much for it to go 1151
with a stroker.

Lucky DOg ..

Thanks for long awaited pics..

Any Anticpated schedule for resto .. Or AFTER the Heemi install in the BEE ?
Someones gotta figure out how to get these things into 10.30's without nitrous. There just so hevvy
I guess that MIGHT require a cage for two or more runs . Maybe 1150 is fast enuff for fun

Ok I gotta get back to work on my Junk.
I know its got 71 markers , but its a 72
Its a little further along now , this one eye BS
is killing me ..

Re: All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR GTX - 03/23/10 03:21 AM

Thanks for all your best wishes guys

As for what am I going to do with it... I'll wipe all the overspray out of the jambs, scrub up the engine compartment, respray the car in enamel, new top and seat covers, correct wheels and tires, hang some new exhaust, and get the bumpers done. The engine will get resealed where needed. Probably replace the valve seals, can't imagine they could still be soft. Same for the trans. I don't see any reason to rip it all apart. I think it is special just the way it is.

All that being said,I'll have to take it to the dragstrip a few times because I will just have to know what a 40,000 mile 440 4bbl is worth.

That Carlisle deal would be cool but there is no way I'll be able keep my hands off it till then.

Re: All my life one mile from home a very rare 1972 RR - 01/14/12 04:21 PM

A little update on the RR-GTX,

I am planning to bring both of my Sunroof 72s. Lately I've been spending time with the GTX. Despite it's horrendous appearance that car runs and drives just like a 40,000 mile car should. I can't believe how nice it is actually. I replaced the orig exhaust system with a new Accurate system. I think it is a bit louder than it should be but the fit was good. I've spent some time with the carb and it runs like it is fuel injected. Really runs nice. It was blowing a bit of smoke so I replaced the valve seals only a few were broken and the rest were still plyable. They all got replaced anyway. The car had no dignity at all with the Keystone/snow tire combo. I mounted up some new polyglas G-60 15s on a set of 070 wheels.

I'd like to try to make the car turn blue before Carlisle. We'll see I guess. The car is very straight from the doors forward with only some light dings in the top of the fenders. I bought a nos 1/4 panel for the left side from the "Star Wars accident". It has a replacement 1/4 on it but I don't like how they seamed it or welded it on for that matter. I'll cut that one off and use it to repair one of my other 71-2s. That would be the biggest part of the body work the rest of the car really is good. Shame I couldn't have found it in its original paint. It is torture because where there was some B5 poking through I ran the buffer over it just messing around. Oh well.

Some mechanical things I have to get through yet, the steering box worm shaft seal, the shift selector seal on the trans and the lower control arm bushings.

I'll get some more pics up when it starts to really look different.
