71 roadrunner srt 8 - 01/22/10 10:31 PM

I just wanted to 'not' do another restoration. It will run 6.1 hemi with 518 od tranny. wilwoods on all four corners with alterkation front suspension. srt magnum wheels and srt challenger seats. This is a fun challenge.

Is there any updates to the rear suspension? How about for the tranny location? I'm thinking of doing the same to my 71, so any info will be appreciated. GREAT job so far

Yeah but weighs allot less LOL
Posted By: hemibeep

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 10/11/10 12:53 PM

The car is actually smaller than a new challenger.
I had a choice of buying new chally, or building this car. The runner should be cheaper and will definately be different. Yes, weighs less too.

The tranny required a bunch of floor mods to tuck up and in to get the correct pinion angle. I had to make tranny crossmember. This may be different with a non-alterkation setup, but I am not sure. Rear susupension is stock with 1/2" lowering block and rear sway bar.

I will also post pics of srt chally seats, they required floor mods, as they sit very high with stock floor "hump" near the outside of floor pans.

Interior is really the last challenge, but I will drive as long as there is seats and seatbelt!

LOL! That picture is AMAZING..hahaha.

I love this build sooo much. This is almost exactly what I want to do with my '72 Charger, although I am going with 17 & 18" Torque Thrusts for some bignlittle action.

I'm attempting the same build this winter (except 5.7 swap)was wondering what ecu and harness choice did you use for the swap? painless? megasquirt? mopar? and does your speedo work with the new tranny setup?

the wiring is hotwire auto.com, and they flash a computer from ram to run the motor. I am using autometer guages including speedo. It is the last guage to sort out.

was it a plug and play wiring setup using the old fuse block? and are you running the stock fuel injection system or the msd 6?
Posted By: hemibeep

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 10/14/10 01:46 AM

hotwire setup is 4 wires. car still uses original fuse block. using stock F.I. and stock 6.1 sensors.

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 09/26/11 12:00 AM

the high beams are "gold anodize" paint. works like a charm.

yes car does run great, can smoke the tires, drives quiet, over 20mpg, and looks pretty cool---at least to me. I am still tuning, and working out little bugs, but isn't that what old cars are all about?

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 11/11/11 08:07 PM

doubles thumbs up and a hats off from me.

I thought I was all high tech think of getting a pulled 360 magnum with all accesories to bolt to my 904 in the 74 RR.

And was considering saving for a big buck 5.7 Hemi from a salvage to my 904,
or going whole hog with a pulled 5.7 an OD tranny.

Then wham, you hit it out of the park with the full 6.1 and tranny transplant.

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/11/12 06:58 PM

That car is an inspiration to me. My absolute favorite body style of all Mopars( I've got 3 myself!)If mine turned out 1/2 as nice, I'd be ecstatic. It's too bad if you are forced to sell, but after all it's only a car, and once you get past the rough spot, there will be others waiting for you.
Good luck, and I wish I could buy it!

Why so much tuning? You mentioned Hotwire doing the computer then a previous post with a Mike doing some tuning and now "the last round". Can you expand as to why?

Thanks

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/13/12 12:07 AM

thanks for the "props". as for the last tuning, I installed a wide band o2, then smoked the trinity tuner in different car, got the tuner back, and having mike look at the full blown data to final tweak. This will raise rev limit, and fine tune A/F at all RPMs. Might even setup a street tune and a track tune.... possibilities are endless with this setup.

How well did it run on the initial tune from Hotwire? What have been the benefits of the additional tunes (MPG? obviously you mentioned the rev limiter, power increase?) thanks as I am doing the 6.1 with Hotwire and factory PCM using Intune.

What exhaust is that on the 6.1?

-C

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/13/12 11:04 AM

initial tune was not good. it is a 5.7 truck, man. tranny controller. It actually ran rich, since it was adding fuel for 5.7 injectors. Yes, Mike has my power turned down until I installed wideband o2. less timing, lower rev limiter, etc.
It can be tuned for any occasion.

exhuast is TTI from front to back.

2.5" or 3"? Also did you mean the tune that was on the computer before the initial re-flash to 6.1 specs or even after the first re-flash from hotwire?

-C
Posted By: hemibeep

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/14/12 11:05 AM

exhaust is 2.5". First flash from hotwire did not work well. they may have made changes since then, they were very helpful and their harness was a true 4 wire hookup. Mike@ostdyno.com is the correct person to use for tuning...

Final questions as I appreciate hearing from someone who has been there done that. Do you think the 2.5" is adequate as I have been told that it is on the edge for this engine and especially if I plan to supercharge some day. Secondly, what was the process and cost for Mike's tuning if you don't mind sharing? Thanks

-C
Posted By: hemibeep

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/16/12 11:07 AM

on the seats, It is major surgery on the floors. You have to remove the "humps" where the floor raises near the rocker. Remove adapters from new seats and bolt down. The rear seats are about 3" too narrow. I had to "build up" a filler using expanding foam wrapped in black interior carpet, and yes, the rear seats do fold down, so you can pass through to the trunk.

I feel 2.5" TTI is sufficient. The motor is 370 cu in. Mikes tuning cost, I do not recall exactly. I pucrhased the diablo trinity from him, and that included some tunning. Just email him at mike@ostdyno.com

thanks
Posted By: hemibeep

Re: 71 roadrunner srt 8 - 03/16/12 11:11 AM

tuning process.
You will have an OBD port, just like a new car. Plug in your tuner, request a data log with specific parameters. Go for a drive, mixing stop/start, hard accel, etc. Then save the file. Email to Mike. He looks at data. Then sends back a new program to load into car. Work really neat.
thanks

Just saw my friends '12 SRT Challenger in white !! Beautiful. I tried trading it in for a NEW AAR Challenger , and have them install a turbo, but it was a no-go. Dang.

As long as the seller got more than what he was asking six months ago, who cares? From the build pictures it looks like it was done top notch.

I'll have to check my DVR tonight.
