Re: 71 R/T project - 10/16/09 09:37 PM

It was a "barn" find that sat partially disassembled since 1982. Took me 15 years to talk the owner into selling it. In the mean time kids had vandalized it and wrecked who knows how many dollars worth of parts. I have allot of work done on it now. I'll post some more pics later.

It is a 340 with a four speed. I had one years ago, can't wait to get it back together.

Re: 71 R/T project - 10/19/09 08:41 PM

I may need to contact you about some parts, I am not yet sure I have everything. When I bought it it had headers and chrome sidepipes. I had them off before I got it off the trailer! I tracked down exhaust manifolds managed to get my hands on the correct intake and TQ carb. I will try to post some more pics.

Now lets leap forward about a year. I just got the glass installed and the re-chromed bumpers back on. Now it is starting to look like the car that I had pictured in my head when I bought it.

Re: 71 R/T project - 10/23/09 04:50 PM

Thank you! Yes, it is the original colors. It is triple black with the flourecent orange R/T stipes. The stripes practically "glow in the dark". It took me awhile to get used to them. However, they have grown on me now. I'm glad I was able to locate them. (with help from MoParts) It did have a repaint in the mid 70's and I was told by the previous owner tha the stripe wasn't available back then. Not sure about that?? The ends of the stripes were present inside the door and fenders when I took them off. I also found the build sheet that calls for them. The interior is one that you either love or hate. I personally love it. It is black with orange/red/black plad inserts. It goes well with the body colors. My brother thinks they need to go, he hates them. They will be staying! The shaker bubble is organisol, I had never heard of this paint until I posted an inquiry on MoParts. I love this paint, it has a sparkle to it that sets it off nicely. Can't wait to get that little 340 back in there and set the shaker back on it. Thanks for the encouragement. It motivates me to keep after it.

Re: 71 R/T project - 10/23/09 09:17 PM

I had a 71 R/T about 1978 and the only parts of the stripes I could buy at the dealer at that time were the stripes on the quarters, and those were common black stripes. (still have them in boxes downstairs).

That's a beautiful car. I agree with the others, the combo is Killer and something you won't see.

Very nice!

Re: 71 R/T project - 10/24/09 03:17 PM

Have you still got the fat rear rims you took off? I wouldn't mind having them, if the bolt pattern will work on a 72 Charger. I've got the front ones.

No, I sold them to help fund the project.

Re: 71 R/T project - 07/24/15 09:11 PM

Hello, it has been awhile! Since my last post I have became a Grandpa. My first Grandson arrived 1 month ago. My first Granddaughter is due to arrive on Monday! I have made some progress on the Challenger. Thanks to Scott Harms my carb is done. I just hauled the Challenger to the local upholstery shop and got the headliner installed. I am blasting and powdercoating the seat springs and then will get the new Legendary seat covers installed. I took a couple of pictures after I got it on the trailer. I hope my pics are attached.

Re: 71 R/T project - 01/05/17 08:41 PM

Hello again. I am trying to get this thing finished and getting online seems to motivate me. I did get the headliner installed and the seats recovered. Pictures of the seats are now attached. My engine is machined and ready for assembly. I need to install fuel and brake lines as well as wire harnesses. I'll need to ask for help on who offers the best fuel/brake lines and wire harnesses?

Re: 71 R/T project - 01/06/17 12:38 AM

Thank you! I'm not sure either. Some people tell me the 71 had the R/T emblems on the front fenders if the car did not have the stripes. Others say they had both stripes and the R/T badges. I don't know for sure.

Re: 71 R/T project - 01/06/17 02:03 PM

It should have R/T emblems on the fenders and trunk lid. There are plenty of pictures in the members section here http://www.71chargerrtregistry.com/ including a lot of original cars owned by Tim Wellborn.

Here's a picture of my Mr. Norms's 440 4 speed R/T

Re: 71 R/T project - 01/07/17 05:35 PM

Very cool '71! I love the seats. My '71 has leather seats but I'd take the cloth insert seats over leather any time!
For wiring harnesses, go with M&H. They are sold by Year One and by Megaparts. You can get up to 30% off with discount codes from YO, but I'd still opt for Megaparts over YO because of their great customer service if I had it to do over again. Sometimes these wiring harnesses are on back order, and YO will just leave you hanging for months until they finally get them and ship. Megaparts I'm sure would keep you up to speed what's going on.
I used M&H on my T/A project, and the trunk harness took 3 months before I received, the headlight harness came right away, purchased from YO.
Worth the wait as these harnesses are great.
I used Fine Lines fuel and brake lines and no complaints.

No it shouldn't!

Since it is a stripe car it already says R/T. Only a stripe delete 71 Challenger R/T would have R/T badges. Also there was never an R/T badge on the rear of a 71.

The fenders should have glue on Challenger badges and the decklid should have a glue on Dodge emblem.

You guys are talking two different cars here. One is asking about a '71 CHALLENGER R/T (E-body), The other is Referencing '71 CHARGER R/T (B-body)!
