1970 Coronet.... 12 month resto starts June 2009! - 04/05/09 01:02 PM

12 month resto starting June 2009!

Ok, It's of course a 1970 Coronet 440 model w/53,000 original miles on it. This one will be cloned into a Bee as close to what I would have ordered new! I'll update with pic's and info as we progress!
These first shots are the car sitting on the trailer in Western Canada just before heading east. Also a pic of the underhood, underside & trunk area.

LOL...well Mark... it's a tight budget and I've always wanted an FC-7 car so I may just remove the side mouldings and change the color out to PURPLE w/steel wheels...then put the 318 drivetrain in for some fun cruzin...enjoy it for a while! The last one I had was apart for over 4 years!! Not going to make the same mistake w/this one...

As for the side mouldings... when they were added the chrome moulding (normally just behind the door on the quarter panel) must have been deleted? Any ideas?

Bryan

Congrats Bryan! Looks like a good score! Hmmm... I'm likin' it as a sleeper Coronet 440 though...

Keep the colour and trim, but add a honkin' 440 and pistol grip 4-speed!

Of course an FC7 Bee clone will be nice too!

Re: 1970 Coronet.... Wanna-Bee project. - 04/30/09 07:28 PM

Dave: You're only allowed one 70 Coronet! Whats going on in Vernon? I was at the little deal in Kelowna but the extremely loud 50's music and tight quarters for my car sent me packing after 15 minutes.

Sounds like I didn't miss much then. Vic mentioned the club is doing something in Vernon; I believe it's at Vernon Dodge. http://www.vernondodge.com/

I'm not sure if I'll go or not; I really should work on the car so I can actually take it to a show one day!

ps. sorry everyone for the OT.

Thanks Robin, you know ONLY too well it's been a long wait for this one! When the budget is tight and the exchange (CDN to US$$) is sitting @ 25% + the cost of shipping..etc..etc...etc... I was VERY lucky to come across this one in Canada w/53,000 original miles!
So, yes I do need that "Special" buldge hood! Came across a few but shipping is always a pain! I have no problem w/leaving the flat one on it for now. I plan on doing this one is stages so I was thinking of getting it road worthy with the engine bay painted (FC-7) and looking as it should w/painted engine etc. The rest of the car will come along in time...

All I know is it's put a smile on my face...

Bryan

P.S... haven't got any BB 4 speed stuff you want to get rid of do you??

Re: 1970 Coronet.... Wanna-Bee project. - 07/24/09 12:12 AM

Well, I've been collecting parts since the last month or so... have new/repo front and rear arm rest bases, front & rear seat covering (white), drivers side (remote) & passengers side mirror, 4 speed hump, under hood washer bottle, battery tie down & used 4 speed pedals, shifter box and mint white sunvisors......... but the best score came with the help of a fellow member here..... a BIG thanks out to "magnumcharger"... Robin found this "Buldge Hood" yesterday and knowing I was in need contacted me first thing today. The hood had been sitting inside for almost 20 years... and only 1/2 hour away!!!! I made arrangments to see it this evening and bought it. So, now one step closer!!!

So, I should have updated pic's of the Coronet soon....

Thats a nice looking car to start with and its going to be a great looking Bee when done.

Im working on a 70 Coronet R/T and love the 70 Coronets.

This is a car you love or hate and I love them.

What parts are you looking for I have a few things (or did) I will see what all I have.

I like that 300 that would be a great one to restore as well.

Forsure Sheldon..... they were in great shape to begin with but had that "baby bumper moulding" down the center, so Jeffery is just taking the extra time to make sure everything is smooth and in line..!!!!!

We didn't end up getting it in until sometime in late Sept/early Oct if I remember correctly so we're not doing bad! The engine is out of the donor car and waiting to be gone through (see pic).

Not sure, I'll be checking out a factory stick car to see exactly how it should look... then go from there. Theres still approx 1 inch of metal overhang on the underside that probably should be trimmed.

Might not be a bad idea to seal it anyway, to keep moisture from wicking through to the carpet if you happen to drive it in the rain.

Re: Updated pictures.. October 23rd..... UPDATES! - 11/02/10 02:54 PM

This paint is actually just a single stage Nason urethane. I put 1 wet coat on just to get some paint on the roof and around the windows before the vinyl roof goes on, so i figured a coat on the quarters would give me an idea of how straight everything would be so i sprayed them as well.

The final paint will be dupont's chromabase base/clear line. I bought more then enough of it before they switched over to the waterborne line here locally.

Just a question why didn't you paint the engine compartment and front door jams?
Posted By: jeff_past

Re: Updated pictures.. October 23rd..... UPDATES! - 11/02/10 04:53 PM

As this was just a 'preliminary coat' if you will, to coat the roof before vinyl, and to check the quarters as i still doubt my work sometimes lol. There was no need to paint anything but. Under the hood and the front of the jambs will be painted only once when the car gets its final paint as there are no worries about those areas. Hope that makes some kind of sense

Nothing wrong with that, just another step to perfection. You're not the only one I've seen do that, there was a Charger (I think on DC.com), After completing his bodywork he painted his car with SS urethane black (because black shows everything). He was satisfied with it so he scuffed it an re-shot it the color he had pick...(I think it was EV2).

Re: Updated pictures.. October 23rd..... UPDATES! - 11/03/10 09:46 PM

Hey Bryan,
Thanks for the kind words. I think you are probably going to beat me to the finish based on your stellar progress so far!

I did read your post in Q&A, but my car has neither the 383 emblems or the fender mounted turn signals so I couldn't be much help.

There are a few guys who do a good job restoring the anodized rear panel, but I opted to buy the best one I could find on ebay instead; my panel isn't perfect, but it looks pretty good.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your progress pics. If you ever find yourself out my way and we'll

And here I thought you would have gone with purple on that cast. Looks like you have to re-potty train again since you can't bend a leg, bin there dun that by gar.

Re: Updated pictures..March 18th 2011 - 03/19/11 03:44 AM

Hey Robert... I did try for the Purple cast but they only had the green & pink!

So, got these pic's from Jeffery today. He's spent sooooooooo many hours block sanding & lining up panels! As mentioned, we are hoping to have the body completely painted by the end of April which will leave us May & June for re-assembly with an end June deadline (self imposed)!

Bryan

Well, all the parts are bolted on!

Got everything lined up!

Finishing off the hood scoops.... holes are in for the fender turn signals.

Sides are super straight after many hours of blocking.

I've seen less than 1/2 dozen Super Bee's with that option! My car has them and I'm keeping them on it as a Super Bee....

Close, but its been close for 2 years Drivetrain/suspension is ready to go in from underneath. Basically every component is done or purchased except for seat backs. Never wanted this to turn into work, so it has been on the back burner while spending time working, family and fishing

Paul, you hit the nail on the head. It shouldn't turn into work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I had my original paint 73 Dart Sport /6 car I thought..hmmm.. maybe drop in a nice small block & 4 speed and drive the he77 out of it. Well, then I decided to get my dream car.... just didn't think it would cost this much!LOL!
Don't get me wrong, it's my choice and It couldn't have been done/finished the way I wanted if not for one young man.. my nephew.. Jeffery! He's known how long I've wanted this exact car. But, you do begin to question the amount of $$$ at some point.... So... when mine is done in June..... with around 30G's or more into it.... I'm going to drive the F%C%I@ wheels off it... then replace them and do it all over again!!! I don't care about the price of gas... the stone chips... rain... or how many miles I'm putting on it..... time to ride with my lady by my side and the lad in the back seat (playing Nintendo DS)...lol!!!!!!

Bryan

P.S. I pulled into a garage one time w/my 70 Charger R/T and a guy asked me..... man, this is such a nice car... why do you drive it the way you do??? I answered... because that's what it was built for!

First off, thanks for checking out my car.

Lyndon, I should have more pictures by the weekend... dash resto right now!!! Randy, I agree.. the white is the perfect color to go w/Purple.

Jeff, as for the patch panels. Got them @ a local parts supplier in Sydney N.S. (R.W.Hawkins) they had them listed in their parts book... I believe around $150.00 per side..... we used one drop down also listed in his book... car is all original panels! I was lucky!

Tnx,

American Racing Thrust D Chrome Wheels
(2) 15x8.5 with 3.75 bs
(2) 15x7 with 3.75 bs

Also ordered another set of wheel opening moldings as the one's from METRO SUCK! The rears don't fit.... so a second set is on it's way from Dale's Cuda Shop.

What color should the rear deck shelf be painted?

Are you using the motor out of the 71 3004bbl440 HP
Second question: did you have the motor rebuilt and put to neutral balance.
If you didn't71 4bbl 440 HP's are externally balanced 6 pack rods vibration damper, you need to use a 6 pack fly wheel, not one off of a neutral balance motor,

Rear finish panel & rear diff restored and ready to go! - 11/07/11 09:01 PM

Well, the car is booked to go into the paint booth this Saturday (Nov 12th)!

Here's the original 41 year old rear finish panel.... I checked into getting it restored and was quoted $500.00 to have it done. Jeffery peeled off the original dealer sticker and it looked brand new so.... he hit it w/150 grit to take off the oxidized coating then 200 grit and so on and so on... then buffed it out..masked it off and added the red paint. Just need to attach the Super Emblem and it's done...saved a bit of coin!

Before:

After:

Rear diff ready to go in also..... new leaf springs, shackles & bushings will be used also.

Rear panel looks GREAT!! Did he clear coat? Did he sand it by hand or DA, wet or dry? I am in the same situation and would rather keep my $500.
Thanks!

Hey Dave, you hit the nail on the head! I'm going to destroy the tires that are on it now (Canadian Tire Blackwalls)... then replace them w the Polyglass repops. I did pick up a nice set of 15" Chrome Torque Thrusts that I'll be putting some WLT's on for a change.... just can't decide exact size and which WLT's to go with.....

American Racing Thrust D Chrome Wheels

I think I mentioned this before, but I used 235/70/15's on 15x7's up front and 275/60/15's on 15x8" on the back (4.5" BS IIRC). my would be that anything larger on the rear may look goofy. Disclaimer; the fronts rub at full lock.....but I wanted them to be the same height as the rears (28") so I could use one spare as well as for asthetic considerations.

Car looks AWESOME, Bryan!

I can't believe you caught up and passed me in 2 weeks! You've been burnin' the midnight oil!

So hurry up and get the grills and side marker lights in, then you can take "finished" outside pics.

Are those the "Dale's Cuda Shop" wheel opening mouldings? how do they look up close and how hard were they to get fit? especially interested in the rears.

Dave
Posted By: jeff_past

Re: Big moves...... almost done!!!!! Nov 27th/2011 - 11/28/11 05:47 PM

The "Dales Cuda Shop" mouldings fit like a glove, 1000% better then the original set i tried to make fit from Metro. There was no rebending/hammering with the rear ones to make them fit the contours as they should.

Still alot of little pieces to get finished yet... hoping to have it running in the next few days.

As for the questions above on the rear tail panel.... I sanded the coating off using 180 grit paper, switching to 320 once 70% of it was off. Once all of the coating was off i worked my way up using 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, all wet paper. Then polished with autosol. The panel is just buffed by hand in those pics, but it could also then be machine buffed, and clear could be added at this point as well if desired.

Thanks for the comments...

Dave... I wish I could take the credit but.. it's Jeffery (see posting above...Jeff_Past) that's been putting in the overtime! He's done a Fantastic job on the car and enabled me to get my "Dream Car" at a price I could afford! I got the family discount.....lol!

It's in for exhaust today (Monday) and as Jeffery mentioned.. should be running soon. It's going to be a loooooooooong winter looking at it in the garage! ... but it is + 12degrees here today so I may get it out for a spin before winter settles in for good .

Thanks guys; looks like I'll order a set of the mouldings from Dale's: the Metro parts look like AZZ and don't come close to fitting. I'll add them to the spare ramcharger duct and 100 other repop pces that weren't good enough to use!

Also, finally decided where to put the tach... not a fan of huge tach's and couldn't bring myself to cut into the hood for a Dixco. So, had this small older one, going to mount it on the left "A" pillar....

Wow! That combo really brings that car to life. I wouldn't be taking those off anytime soon.

Now that's more like it.
You can put the white lettering on the inside.

lookin' good Bryan!

What did you end up going with for tire size?
I also like the steelie look, but yours (being narrower than the stock 15x7's) looked too small and they needed RWL's; looks much better.

Tnx guys, I was torn between these and the stock 15" Rallye's so now I need to get tires for them!

Dave, I agree the steel wheels were to narrow and had only painted them to have on the car while it was being worked on. The tires are 275/60/15's on the rear and 225/70/15's up front. Exactly the look I wanted and am really happy with them.

I painted the front drums this morning and will get the rears done to match the next rain day!!!

Here's a few more pictures...

Perfect! I wish I went with 225's instead of 235's up front. plus it looks way better balanced than using a 60 series front.

Well, I really feel I've come full circle w/the 70 Super Bee "Replica"! We entered it in an all "Mopar" show over the weekend and took Best Dodge which was not an easy accomplishment considering the quality of cars presented.

I'm finishing off this thread with a huge thanks out to my wife Shannon for all her support, our boy Brady (my future wrench turner), Jeffery for the body and paint (and countless hours or extra work), Darrell for the drive train work and my father Donnie for all his help!

Lastly, tnx to you guys & gals for your comments and putting up w/me! By far the best website/community out there!

Bryan

Bryan, did you ever send a pic of the completed car and trophy pics to the previous owner, would have loved to see the look on his face.

Robert, I do keep on touch w/the previous owner and he's seen the pictures of the completed car. He likes the outcome....

So, we brought the Bee out to its second show on the 22nd of June and got "Best Mopar". Again, very proud/happy with our Coronet!

..we were contacted by www.zazzle.com to use our car for their online sales. So, it's now featured on over 70 items under the "American Muscle" series. It's amazing how far the car has come.....! Can't believe how lucky we've been!!!
