Sharpie's 1971 Demon

Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 03/17/09 09:12 PM

Well since there's a place for it now, I guess I'll post my Mopar project - a 1971 Demon that I bought February 08.

It's a slant-six/auto Demon with a 7.25" rear end and the entire thing's economy-class - or will be, until I get through with it.

That looks like a clean demon...always loved those cars. Goodluck with the car and keep us updated

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 03/17/09 09:17 PM

I first started on the engine. I got it running, but since it's no longer running due to a spun rod bearing, I won't go into too much more detail.

After it was running, I started working on the dash, replacing the non-functioning stock unit with a panel from Redline Gauge Works and stuffed with Auto Meter Designer Black II gauges and Detroit Speed and Engineering LEDs.

I wired and installed it all myself.

Boy there sure don't come much cleaner than that, heck a light color sand and a good buff job and I bet that paint would even gleam!

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 03/17/09 09:33 PM

Then I started working on the brakes. The upper control arms are from Magnumforce, as are the spindles. The brakes are Magnumforce's Wilwood kit.

The kit's great - it just won't fit over my 14" wheels (even though it fits the 4" bolt pattern). So up front now I'm rolling on trailer wheels.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 03/17/09 09:39 PM

And now is the biggest project I've ever undertaken. A buddy handed me an old 5.9L Magnum 1998 long block for free.

Over the last eight months, I've been rebuilding it into a torque monster with all-new parts from Speed Pro, Sealed Power, Clevite, Edelbrock, Holley, Milodon, and Racing Head Service.

July 08 - back from machine shop (.030 over, dipped, and reassembled short block):

September 08 - short block painted:

February 09 - Dampner, heads, pulleys, distributor mounted:

March 09 - almost there (Edelbrock intake, Holley carb mounted):

And for my final catch-up update, here's what I want to look like in a year or two:

Not anymore. It's a fifty-foot car for sure. The interior looks like hell, too.

Your very lucky! What a solid car to start with, just think of all the time you don't have to pour into the body......more time and money for the goodies!

It turns out that half of it's mud. The other half may be steel, but I'm not sure. A magnet won't stick to about 80% of the passenger quarter.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Thanks to some great guys: scratchnfotraction, posest, hotroddave, and B1Arno, I am much closer to the prize than I thought I would be right now:

I gave it away for free to Red on slantsix.org.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 05/11/09 06:25 PM

A couple weeks ago, someone from slantsix.org gladly took my old slant and trans out of the Demon.

Within the last two weeks, I started work on the engine bay. I cleaned and repainted with a custom-mixed metallic spray from Jerry's Paints in Sacramento, CA. For the $14/can, it was great. It's a little more glossy than stock, but color-matches perfectly. I painted the k-member and suspension pieces with Rustoleum Rust-Tough semi-flat black paint.

Then I began rewiring the bay. A lot of the wiring was corroded or just looked bad, so I cut and re-soldered a few wires to make it look good. I also, thanks to MowP4rsn's help, I got a new battery tray from E-Body Ed to replace my corroded tray.

Since I am using an electronic speedometer, I decided to rewire my original setup (through the speedometer grommet) to the bulkhead plug. Other than not being able to find the right female terminals, it went alright, and now I don't have wires where they shouldn't be.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 05/11/09 06:29 PM

Saturday was the big day. SuprB70 came over to lend his support and tools to me and my neighbor Russell. This job was definitely a three-person job, but we finally got the Demon a new heart:

My neighbor Russell:

I began wiring it yesterday, and plumbing is the task at hand this evening. I hope if all goes well that I can fire it up by the end of this week!

The payoff was SOOOO worth the year of building this engine.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 06/08/09 04:57 PM

Wow, I thought I updated this more often. I got the engine fired up, and drove around the block a couple times on open headers. Engine runs like a top.

I installed the Summit 2.5" exhaust kit, and the mufflers from the kit actually make it sound really good. Maybe I'll make a sound byte this week.

I had some trouble with my RPMs. Got a whole bunch of ideas from Moparts members - kickdown, torque converter slipping, bad third gear, etc. It turned out that the tach was on the wrong tach setting (for four cylinders), and was showing about double RPM

Because I didn't figure this out until AFTER I got home from Baconfest and Mopar Alley, I left the Demon at home this weekend and took the Mini to the shows. I missed my deadline of having it ready for Baconfest 09, but at least it turned out the transmission is alright

Anyway, I hope to get some pictures and video this week for y'all.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 06/16/09 06:29 PM

I guess it's getting a little closer to what I'd imagined. Now I need a set of BBP steelies and a B-body 8.75 to throw under the back.

A little work

No mo' wagon wheels!

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 01/07/10 05:57 PM

Hmmph, I should have updated this earlier...

I did end up getting nice BBP steelies for the front, thanks to a FABO moderator, GTXperience.

Later, I found a '74 dual-snorkel air cleaner at a swap meet, and decided it'd be the perfect candidate for a feaux-'71 340 air cleaner:

I also purchased a BBP 8.75" rear from a 68 Coronet. It's a 2.94:1 742 open case. Should hold me plenty, for now. I kept the 10x2.5" drums in the rear, but rebuilt them. nothing much else was wrong on the axle except for the brake lines, so I just threw it back together with a coat of brushed-on Rustoleum satin black

Upcoming, I will be pulling the entire drivetrain, installing a Firm Feel or Steer and Gear power box, rebuilding the torqueflite (leaky seals), and painting the motor orange. This should all happen before April or May.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 01/19/10 05:35 PM

A tiny update - I started bending the brake lines for the rear end last night. I was going to be nice to the current brake lines under the car, but they didn't cooperate well, so in order to get the junction block off of the axle, I had to cut one of the lines. Looks like I'm now getting the rear axle done before anything else Good timing though, as I just have to bend the brake lines, get some correct u-bolts, and it'll be ready to roll under the car.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 01/20/10 05:28 AM

Every little bit of work gets you closer to a complete car. Have fun with the rear end.
Posted By: sharpie

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 01/24/10 02:13 AM

The rear end is ready to go in. I had some fun scrambling when I realized the left-hand side of the rear end had left-handed threaded studs. got some from the parts store and filled in the rest with my donor 8.25's axle studs. Wagon wheels have to go on for a while with some out-of-place 255/60/15 Firestone Firehawks from my friend's Nova.

Nice work Brian. My cars are still in Vacaville awaiting better weather to ship them to Florida. On that note...Man is this shop I have now going to be great. 24 foot tall ceilings so a lift is in my future. It is even plumbed for air as well. I will get some pics here shortly. Just getting settled is a job in itself...cr8crshr/Bill

All 3137 lbs of it!

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/09/10 06:26 PM

So I've been in the process of making the car for sale the past month or so. Debt to pay, so it's the first on the block.

But in the process of making the car presentable, it's actually starting to grow on me more and more. I replaced the leaking PS box last week. Got the new one in, and it's still not perfect, but miles ahead of the other one!

Then yesterday I wired up an audio amp to my 6x9s and wired my iPod's 1/8" audio jack to the amp, so now even though I have no radio, I have tunes!

It's also going back on the dyno May 1st. I'm hoping to squeeze 300hp and 375tq to the wheels.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/09/10 09:08 PM

That's cool about the iPod. I haven't messed with Stereo stuff in a while and I thought about doing something similar in my Challenger. Thought about hiding an amp and rigging an iPod to it but when I talked to some of the stereo guys at Best Buy they said it wasn't possible. Didn't seem that big of a deal to me. What amp did you use and how did you connect it?

Joe

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/10/10 12:00 AM

I used a Toxik Audio amp, but any one should do. Here's a diagram of how I connected it:

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/10/10 01:53 AM

So do you control the volume with the Ipod?
Posted By: sharpie

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/10/10 03:20 AM

Yeah, I set the amp's level to almost minimum. That way, about 3/4 iPod level is too loud.
Posted By: NV69B7RR

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/10/10 03:29 AM

Thats a good idea.

BTW, I hope you wind up keeping your Demon and that things work out so you don't have to sell it.

Re: Sharpie's 1971 Demon - 04/20/10 03:03 AM

So I really felt a roadblock to selling the car has been the interior. I have been making leaps and bounds on it recently, and decided tonight that the dash pad was coming out. I think it looks at least ten times better now.
