My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon

My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 04:25 AM

In the early '90s I picked up my 1973 Dodge Power wagon. It was very rough! It was supposed to have a rod knock. The corner of the front seat was ate up by a horse, and it had been abused.

I took it home expecting to rebuild the engine, but found the torque converter bolts were too long. After a tune and carb overhaul, I had a running Power Wagon.

In the late '90s the engine dropped a valve and wiped out #8 cylinder, block and all. It sat up in my father-in-law's back field for 5 years.

I finally decided to get her going again. This was 2000 or so. I bought new tires (Nylon knobbies) and rims, rebuilt a 318 using a 1985 block, the 1973 heads, and an Edelbrock cam, lifters, and intake. I also added headers to the truck.

Of course, she was rough when I bought her, and rough she remained. Here are a few photos of her "beauty marks."

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 04:31 AM

The seat was trashed, so I bought a reupholstered one. I also bought a different fuel tank - one that fits under the right saddle under the bed - to replace the rotted in-cab tank.

Open headers are a blast to drive at night! The neighbors probably didn't think so.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 04:38 AM

In 2005, I "bought" a truck off of E-bay that I didn't intentionally buy. Being the stand-up guy I am, I went to Michigan in February and picked up the truck that I was stupid enough to bid on when I shouldn't have. Long story. Suffice to say that was one long weekend trip. On the bright side, I sold a Pontiac 428 crank and block for $750 to a friend in Indiana, which financed my trip to the Great White North.

Actually, the truck was very straight. Not as good rust-wise as I would have liked, but much better than mine. AND it was one color!

In August of that year, my pit crew (my sons and a few friends) and I set off to change the body on my truck. We had the major work done in a couple of weekends. It took several more weeks to finish up the final details and get it road worthy.

Here is a before shot.

I originally wanted to use the birdbath hood, but found it too rough to continue. Besides, the truck would be one color (my wife's idea ).

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:18 AM

Both of the available speedometer needles were broken, and the '73 speedo made noise while working, so I decided to repair the one from the '80 truck. I used a piece of vinyl mini-blind cut to shape and epoxied it onto the broken stub. I then painted it with fluorescent orange paint. I painted the other gauges' needles while I was there. Came out pretty nice!

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:20 AM

I also painted the dash bezel. I used the 1980 one so I could incorporate an in-dash tach.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:30 AM

Actually, it works pretty good. Certainly not as tough as Rhino liner or similar products, but not near as expensive, either. I used POR-15 on the surface before I applied the Herculiner.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:46 AM

In December of 2007, we suffered a severe ice storm. As a result, a tree fell on my Power Wagon. It severely damaged my bed, and got the cab as well.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:53 AM

I bent the bed back with a porta-power. I searched for and found another bed and cab for my truck.

The city Gestapo called me out for my "unlicensed" truck in the back yard, so I swapped out the bed a few weekends ago. I obtained a hood when I got the truck bed and cab.

I wanted to add the birdbath hood, so I went ahead an painted it and stuck it on (with the original '73 cowl). I like it!

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 05:57 AM

This is where we sit thus far. Today, March 7th, Saturday, I removed the cab from the donor truck. I begin work in earnest to make it ready to be my new cab. Pics to follow.

Remember, in all of this, my intent is NOT to make a show truck, but to have a solid work truck. My hat is off to those who meticulously restore their trucks to perfection. They are works of beauty. However, my intent is not to build something like that, but to enjoy, drive, and work my truck. And it really does love to work!

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 07:26 PM

Thanks!

As I was looking over the information this morning, I remembered quite a lot that I have done over the past several years, especially to the drivetrain.

So I'm flashing back to a few months after the changeover; it's probably 2005 or 2006. Yeah, it all blurs after a few years!

Earlier in its life, the truck was abused by the sons of the man I bought the truck from. They parked it in a creek for a while and didn't changed the fluids afterward. Needless to say, the rear 8-3/4 3.90 gears were pitted and needed replacement. So I pulled the pumpkin to change the gears...

Side note: This truck is a half ton! Notice the number of spring leaves this truck has! That's what, 8 including the lower? I have the broadcast sheet and it lists a special spring package - SR4701 RR SPRG. I've seen 3/4 ton trucks that have less spring! I suppose it was for a camper or some such purpose. It will hold a load, too.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 07:43 PM

The carrier was pretty rusty as well. I opted for a good used carrier with spider gears. I didn't go posi because of cost constraints at the time.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 07:45 PM

I cleaned up the housing, purchased a Yukon gear set from Randy's Ring and Pinion in Washington state, and set her up.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 07:51 PM

Of course, the axle bearings were shot and needed replacement, so I replaced them, too. I cleaned rust out of the housing and put new seals in. Curious animal, the 8-3/4. Last year, due to water intrusion, I had to go back into the axle bearings. THIS time I used the updated "Green" bearings. MUCH better. I heartily recommend them for anyone redoing an 8-3/4 axle.

Due to the new pinion, I changed the yoke as well.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 08:07 PM

I really needed to replace many of the gears. The bearing surfaces were pitted. I opted, however, to rebuild the case using new bearings and seals, and find a complete unit later, rather than chase down all of the necessary gears and shafts.

So...the plan is to replace the floor pans, repair the cowl leaks, take as much rust off as I can get to, and treat all floors and inside surfaces with Zero rust. I'll then finish the outside.

I've really debated on what to paint the truck. I'll show you some of my ideas....

Idea 1: Camo

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 08:54 PM

My wife is averse to the idea. I told her I was showing support for our son who is in Iraq. Still, she has a point.

So, what about painting it the original color: Medium Tan?

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 08:56 PM

Yes, I plan on adding a roll bar with lights. I just haven't got around to it yet.

I could paint it like a Macho, with tan as the base.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/08/09 08:59 PM

Well, she wasn't really thrilled about that one. But whose truck is this, anyway! She suggested that I leave it in Teal Frost Green, the current color. I speculated - what if I painted it like a Macho, but kept the green, hmmm?

If you go blue, how 'bout the mid 90s patriot blue?
Then again, that's not the original color of your truck or the donor...
I thought she only cared that it be one color?
Good read, and way to stick with a long-term project!

I voted Other, and it says "Specify", so here goes. In the early 80's a guy at our church bought a "Prospector" I believe it was called. It was a metallic black below the belt and up top, including the top couple inches of the box (typical 80's/90's breakup on the dog trucks) with a really nice metallic gold in the middle. I have not seen a combo I liked better...

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/12/09 04:24 AM

Well...I like it. I've thought seriously about how to go about painting that. It would solve some problems, actually. For example, my current bed has holes where the upper trim was located. If I went with an upper trim piece, those would be completely covered up. It would also coordinate with the black zero rust that I'm going to paint the underside of the cab and bed.

My wife...no. She almost shrieked when she saw it. She really doesn't like the two-tone paint schemes of the Dodge trucks, but for the life of me I can't figure out why.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/13/09 03:06 AM

We've been a bit slow at work (cold weather more than anything), so I've had a chance to begin the paint removal/prep work. As stated earlier, my goal will be to repair the rot, prep the other pitted/rust 'challenged' surfaces (such as the cowl drain/wiper linkage area) for Zero Rust, and primer/paint the entire cab.

The cowl/windshield area is nicely free of rot.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/13/09 03:11 AM

There was one surprise. Where the firewall drip rail meets the inner cowl drain, the debris caused a rust through. This also opens into the cab, so I'll have to repair it to prevent a leak. Still, minimal damage at this point.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/13/09 03:45 AM

I've discovered that I placed my Power Wagon emblem in the center of the birdbath depression. While looking back through my original pictures of the truck, I noticed that the emblem was actually at the rear of the depression. I didn't know there was a difference in placement but evidently there is. Here are pictures from 1973, 1974, and 1975 for comparison. Perhaps this was just arbitrary?

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/15/09 01:44 AM

Saturday, March 14th, 2009.

I went to the shop with Matthew (my youngest son) today to get caught up on a bit of work and to work on the cab.

I brought in a welder that belongs to my boss, but something is wrong with the trigger. I'll have to budget and get my own, now.

I spent an hour or so reinstalling an intake manifold, and after that, we worked on the cab.

Matt is new to body work, but I know he'll be old hat in no time.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 03/15/09 01:48 AM

Our objectives on the cab today are:
1) Sand the paint off of the cab.
2) Remove the rusty floor.

We met both objectives!

While Matt was sanding away, I began to cut out the floor.

Now it's leaking onto my steering column while I drive. There is almost a thin stream of water coming down the left "A" pillar. I have gotta get this cab done sooner rather than later....

My son, Caleb, is back from Iraq for leave this weekend, so I'll be spending time with him instead of working on the cab.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/05/09 03:21 AM

April 4th, 2009.

The weather is nice in Joplin this weekend - the highs are in the 70's today, Saturday.

I picked up the 18ga steel that I'm using to form new floor pans. I decided to build them from scratch for several reasons. First, I want to. Second, I'll save enough money to offset the cost of a decent mig welder for the project. Third, I want to use 18ga instead of 19ga or 20ga for the pans. Since this isn't a show truck, I'm not concerned that someone can see underneath that it's had floor pans welded in.

So, we began...

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/05/09 03:24 AM

I had an idea for several weeks about how to proceed with the floor pan. I decided to make as much of a "one piece" pan that I could. So, I mapped the 48" x 30" piece of 18ga to the old floor pan and marked the bend areas...

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/05/09 03:27 AM

The edge will have a double bend where it meets the rocker panel; it's sort of an "S" shape in sectional view. It would help if I had a large sheetmetal brake! I had to make do with these tools:

(Note to self: get a pneumatic panel cutter! 18ga is rough to cut with tin snips! )

Posted By: 734x4PW

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/05/09 03:32 AM

The first bends I tackled were the side rocker areas. Then I bent the front incline. Not bad, so far...

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/05/09 03:35 AM

I cut out a "V" shape for the side wall to the seat mounting. I'll add another piece in this area later. The remaining large flap was bent in two places to replicate the factory bends. Here's what I ended up with. The rear section still has to be trimmed. I gave up using the snips; I used a die grinder with a cutoff wheel.

Week of April 6th through 11th: Since this was Easter week, I didn't have much time to work on the cab. I spent the last two week's evenings and Saturday, the 11th, writing 3 music soundtracks for Easter service. Still, since work was not too busy, I managed to fabricate the right side of the floor pan.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/13/09 01:29 AM

Another shot from a different angle. I will use the center "high spot" part of the floor pan with the new sheet metal. Since I have a removable 4x4 hump cover, I'll use that as a template once I trim and weld the metal in place on the front, back, and sides. More to come...

Week - April 13 - 18, 2009

I finally found a welder that fits my budget and that will do what I need. I purchased a Hobart 125 from Northern Tool. Right now, I'll use flux core, but I'll eventually get the kit to convert to a MIG - probably when get to the outer sheet metal on the body.

In the meanwhile, I continued the arduous task of clearing the cab from all paint, seam sealer, and loose rust.

April 25th, 2009.

I received the welder on Friday, the 24th of April. I test welded a few scraps of metal, enough to know I am going to have to practice before I tackle the floor pans!

So, I decided to build a welding cart (what else!?).

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/26/09 03:58 AM

Not sure what the issues you are finding are, but I can tell you that when it comes to doing the floorpans, you won't be welding a continuous bead. Body metal is pretty thin, and the constant heat buildup will start to cause blowouts. Practice getting a good puddle in short (~1 second) bursts. Go slow, and keep it cool. There are some very talented metalworkers here that can give way better info than I but I will be happy to share what I can...
Posted By: 734x4PW

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 04/26/09 05:19 AM

Yeah, you're exactly right. When welding the 1" tube to the 18ga. sheet metal on my cart, I could easily burn through if I wasn't careful. Another issue is the use of .030" Flux core. I know it's hated by many, but is a necessary evil in my case until I can procure the MIG kit in order to use .023" wire and gas.

Besides, after I'm done, no one will see the floor pans anyway.

Thanks for the tip on the short bursting. I should have some time next week to try it out when I begin installing the pans. If anyone else would like to share their own tips, I would (absolutely!) love to hear them as well!

By others shared experiences we learn and grow!

Progress, May 2nd, 2009

After spending a weekend welding a cart for my new HH125, I decided it was time to get back to work on the cab.

With two of my sons, Levi and Matthew, I began to make the final preparations for installation of the left floor pan.

I made the front divots:

Thanks, guys. I'm learning something new everyday. I tried to put a penny held by a pair of needle nose pliers behind a hole in the body (trim hole) in order to weld it shut - copper, you know. Not gonna happen Johnboy! I melted the penny and the pliers went straight through. Yep, I need a copper spoon, duh.

But I'm having fun.

Progress May 4 and 5, 2009.

Monday I welded up across the seams of the floorpan.

Tonight (Tues) I cut the sidewall piece for the left floor.

I'm working on my "stitching" method to keep the heat down while welding sheet metal. Welding 18 ga. to 18 ga. helped a bunch.

Here is the piece welded together.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/06/09 03:15 AM

After wire brushing, I noticed a few missed spots, so I fixed those.

After grinding down the welds, I touched up a few spots. I also ground down too much on the "nose" of the piece and had to re-weld it. After welding, grinding and brushing this is what I ended up with:

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/06/09 03:20 AM

I still have to drill more holes to attach it to the supports more securely and open up a hole to access the body mount boss, but that is for another day. I also started on the right side pan, but there are a few issues I have to correct on the body before I can install it.

I took a piece of ¾" copper pipe and flattened it out to use as a spoon. It's worked pretty well for me, and it's been CHEAP!

Pennies aren't really copper anymore, as you might have noticed!

4speeds4me, that is a great idea! Thanks for bringing that up. Now, where have I seen some spare copper pipe around here...

Just remember that heat travels VERY quickly through copper, so if you're holding this by hand, it's going to get uncomfortable VERY quickly! DAMHIK!

I hear ya! It reminds me of that story of the guy that picked up a hot horseshoe right after it was forged and set to cool. After he threw it down on the ground quickly, the smith asked him if he was alright. He said, "Yeah, it just doesn't take me long to look at a horseshoe."

May 16, 2009 Progress

My family and I left for a wedding on Friday night (May 8th) in Tarkio, Mo., so I was gone last Saturday. Consequently, I did not get much done until last week. Since that week was busy, too (personal things and ASE certification tests (8) on Thursday - 3 hours in the fightin' chair!), I wasn't able to do much until today.

I did, however, experiment on ways to close up those pesky trim holes in the "B" pillar area.
Here are the holes:

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:20 AM

I used a piece of 18 ga. behind the holes to back up the thin sheet metal. The only mistake was using a magnet to hold it in place. Still, it came out OK with a minor amount of panel warping.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:22 AM

I also had some "A" pillar rot down at the floor pan area, so I cut the damage out.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:25 AM

After cutting a fresh 18 ga. patch, I welded it in place.

I also cut out the rot at the rear seat belt support. I'll need to cut out a section beyond that, but I cut out enough to get the floor pan in today.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:27 AM

With these tasks done, I focused on bending the floor to the new configuration.

Here are the floor divots. Because these are longer, they caused the metal to pull more instead of stretch (as in a die), so I had to massage the panel to get it back into proper proportion after the divots were struck.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:30 AM

I also shaped the right side of the pan, and the rear of the pan to match existing contours. In addition, I marked and pre-drilled weld holes to make it simpler to attach to the floor supports. I'll still have to drill and complete the other side.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/17/09 02:33 AM

I clamped, tacked, then began installing the pan. I seem to be getting a bit more experienced with the welding. My beads aren't nearly as high as the other side (less grinding) and penetration is good. I slowed WFS and increased gun speed a tad bit (less heat on the area).

The stitching method is also working well. Who knows? I may make a novice welder, yet!

May 18 and 19 Progress:

I spent time after work Monday and Tuesday working on the cab.

I filled in the right side trim holes, welded the floorpan to the rocker panel assembly, and welded the front seam of the floorpan more completely.

The trim holes:

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/20/09 03:09 AM

I also welded the door jamb foot back onto the rocker panel - it broke loose somehow.

Re: My Journey: 1973 Dodge Power Wagon - 05/20/09 03:11 AM

Today (Tuesday) I cut the upper level of the right side floorpan and attached it to the existing floor. I drilled and welded the pan to the floor support, cut out the right wing panel for the floor pan and installed it, too.

The right side pan assembly installed:
