B5 blue challenger ta resto

B5 blue challenger ta resto - 01/08/17 12:49 AM

I'm going to post progress as I restore my blue challenger ta. I've decided to do the car really correct and as detailed as I can. I'm sure I'll need advise along the way. As many of you know I was thinking of selling my original 450 rims off the car but have decided against it now with much advise from you. I'm going to mount the correct poly glas tires on these for shows and I'll use the new Firestone wide ovals poly / radials on my rally's for a vintage looks on them.
I'll post pics as I go through the car a restore it.
This is where it sat for the last 20 plus years.

Interior is actually pretty decent with a very nice original dash pad. It has no cracks in it and it a factory 3 speaker dash car.

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 01/08/17 01:45 AM

Next on the list is to pull the steering column, dash and drop the drive line out on the stand as one unit. Then on the rotisserie it will go.
Then I'll start stripping the under side.

My favorite color combo on a T/A. 4 speed console car makes it even better!

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 01/08/17 02:46 AM

Came with a nos front valance, gas cap, air filter, sill plates, door handles, stripes, all the brite trim and nos head light bezels for a ta. Also has the original jack and space saver tire in the trunk with the inflator can. I have the original owner info and where it was purchased new. The dealer ship is in Maine and still open so I plan on swinging down and picking up a dealer plate for the front of my car from them. I'll then see if they my know what the dealership decals May of looked like from back in the 70s so I can get one made up like it. Maybe they still might have some kicking around.

The Underside is very clean and rust free. Way nicer then I was expecting. I'm going to get it ready for the blast booth now. I'll blast the under side, jams, trunk floor, and engine bay and go from there.

T/A's are cool and all but tell me more about THE VAN!!
Posted By: 79machocharger

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 01/09/17 04:22 AM

It's my street van , it's one of my most favorite rides. I'm repainting it to look like the yellow street van that is used in all the advertisements.

These are the prior owners grocery getters too. He bought nearly all of them when they only a few years old. Green 396 Camaro is a survivor.

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 01/09/17 04:18 PM

much of the underside of my car has been spray bombed and I've lost many of the details of the underside. I did notice when I removed the rear sway bar I could see the light gray primer and was able to see how much blue over spray came under the car.

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 03/29/17 08:31 PM

Nice and good luck, IMHO, NOS 40 YO stripes can't be used. I remember trying to install a set in the late eighties back when they were only 15 YO and the backings refused to come off after being together for so long. After 40 years!!!??? I would go with a new quality repo set and save the NOS set for conversation pieces.

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 03/29/17 10:20 PM

Used a set of NOS stripes on my T/A and they worked.
Mine were from the 80s and installed on the car in 2015.
Unloading the project from the trailer after getting it from the resto shop, a malfunctioning winch led to a ramp cable scraping the drivers fender, a painter friend was able to repair the paint below the fender "line", so the top part with the original stripe was saved. Lost the 340 Six Pak sticker though.
A friend had an NOS one that I used to replace the one lost, and it went on fine!
Then I took the car to MCACN Friday morning of set up last year, and later in the day when I went to move it to its display spot, I found the drivers stripe had a scrape on it, which wasn't there when the car left my garage that morning. bawling
I got an NOS door stripe to replace the damaged one, but we will see if this one works.
I'm starting to think NOS stripes are cursed! eek

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't worked on it at all lately. Spent most of the winter sledding on weekends. I'm going out this weekend to start on it again. Will post any progress picks along the way.

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 04/21/17 11:09 AM

Are you leaving the heater box, and master cylinder in place? Only a few bolts and they are out.
Posted By: 79machocharger

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 04/21/17 09:22 PM

I'm taking the power brake booster off and might drop the heater box. Decided to just give it a nice paint job and get it back on the road. I was going to get it blasted and detail it up to the hill but have decided against it right now and just get it painted and on the road really quick. Seems like I have zero garage time and I hate seeing it sitting in the garage all apart. I'll drive for a while and do it up nice later on.

Engine bay sealed

Re: B5 blue challenger ta resto - 05/17/17 08:06 AM

Engine bay is painted blue. Now I'll clean up the inner fenders and underside and reshoot black. I'll also shoot the cowl out black as well. Install new gas tank and brake and gas lines. Detail rear end and redo front end k frame. Have my motor gone through and checked out. Then I'll get back down on all four wheels and start doing body work to the out side of the car.

lightly glass beaded the original steel rims and lightly primed with dtm. Noticed this part number that I've never noticed before. All four rims are the same.

Agreed that would be great if Good Year did the same.
